Thank you so much for all the helpful hints! After years of being an iPhoto hold out, I finally had the courage to make the switch to Mac's Photos, Your tricks have helped tremendously especially the one about creating an "Unorganized Photos" Smart Album for finding photos not in albums. I know you said you cannot delete from the Smart Album but I found you can use Command/Option/Delete to do so. It will also delete off of All Photos so reserve this function for pictures you never want to see again!

Hello David! First of all, I'd like to thank you for your time being spent on us. It is very useful.
I am a new to mac and I have recently been given a mac. I didn't know how or where to store my personal videos/photos and I found this tutorial to be very handy although now I am encountering a problem and no matter how many times I look it up online I cannot seem to find what I am looking for, so you might actually be able to help me.
I have recently gone on a trip and I have a lot of short clips of video which I had transfered to the photos app on my mac. I wanted to make a nice video using Final Cut Pro X but many of the videos are shot in 4K so I cannot see these clips properly using this app. I would need to "downscale" them but there are many that aren't shot in 4K resolution. My question is... "How can I filter my search so that it shows my only 4K video?" I mean, you should be able to do that creating a smart folder but I cannot find this option and it's driving me mad. Please help!!
    Thank you in advance.
I look forward to your reply at your earliest convenience.

Me Cox. I too, like nrael serutluc a yr ago said, am a detailed learner. I’ve worked with macs since the first ones were available in the 80s. Upgrading software for a newer faster Mac became financially impossible some years

... became financially impossible so switched to a PC. Now a friend just gave me the newest MacBook Pro. WOW!!!! So many bells and useless whistles and tiny type screen reading. If it wasn’t for having iPhones last several years I’d give it back. Have just found you thanks to wonders of marketing to my tastes. Am trying to give a slideshow on a recent trip and your vids are a lifesaver ❣️👌 love the details and repeat of techniques. Despite all my years of experience I find little is intuitive anymore. Mainly because of all the nested controls buried in unexplained new choices. I need an overview of what can be accomplished and then how. So your basic information is invaluable. I’ve designed and built websites, and edited videos I’ve taken but all with more old school technology. And did I mention I’m almost 80 yrs young. So I too am lengthy and loving it. Thank you so much for your thoughtful explanations and repetition as there is so much to add to our mental filing systems. I’ve subscribed and will recommend to others. Cheers 🥂 and happy holidays 💕🌲💕

Hello from the Netherlands, Marie here. First of all I would like to tell you that I really enjoy your tutorials David A. Cox. I'm new to an Apple computer so there's lots to learn for me. I've been working with Microsoft for the last 3 decades, so it's a big change. But I'm getting there. I have a question about organizing my pictures. For example: I shot about 150 pictures at my mom's 90th birthday last week. I have iCloud so all these pictures are on all my divices, with are my iPhone, my iPad and my Macbook. Is there a way to store or keep those pictures so I don't have them all over the place and filling up my precious space everywhere? Just wondering. I hope you have a solution for me.

Staying home and getting organized. I’ll Venmo donation soon. Thanks! The best advice was to delete and start over with albums that I had already started. I am organizing what I already have but I am also scanning in old photos from regular albums. After I import a batch, I change the date and put them in the wonderful albums that you have helped me set up. My Import Library is really filling up. I would love to put those somewhere. Can I/should I hide them? I can’t delete them, correct? If I don’t have any photo marked as a favorite and I select that, I would be hiding them right? Some of them are photos that I have scanned in, some are imported from my GoPro, and some of them I am not sure why are they are there but maybe from my daughter’s camera! If they are there, then they are someplace else as well, in my regular photo library, correct? Thank you. And look for that Venmo donation soon, I promise.

Thank you. Great video!!! What is frustrating with Apple Photos in not knowing whether a photo was moved into a folder or not because it always appears in Photos. What I love about Windows is once you move the photo into an album, it doesn’t show up anymore in the pictures folders. Yes, I know I get a duplicate warning if trying to move it, but it is very frustrating. I wish Apple photos worked like Windows. Are there any plugins or Apps that make working with photos easier more like Windows? Thank you for your time. Brad

Hi David, from very busy Provincetown. This tutorial was really helpful. Just one question, which may reflect a bug in Photos. I have 95 albums created. Some alphabetical, some by year. Once in a while, Photos will rearrange them spontaneously. I have even watched albums move, as if on a ouija board. Is this a bug in the app? The last time it happened, when I lost power with the app running, the resorting was random and involved half my albums.

All my pictures are in the library.
How can I simply drag a picture from 1 spot to another,
There was a way to do this with iPhoto.
    Example:
A picture is 10th from end, and want to drag that picture to the end, so it becomes the last picture.

Hey David, thank you for your very informative videos! I have a dumb question to ask you. So as you are making all the different albums do the photos move to that album and if you have a photo in more the one album do you have now 2, 3 or more of the same photo or do you have just one photo and the rest are a representation of that photo? What I am asking is are you making more of each photo? Or am I just thick and not following this right. If I look for doubles will find many of the same photo in different albums? I am trying to move my photos to a exHard drive and confused.

I have a question, after I have created a smart album (which I did exactly as you explained - called 2019), my iPhotos on my mac wasn't 'grabbing' all of the photos in that year. ( btw I use to use iPhoto and aperture) so for iPhones, would you have one Library and go by YEAR in one .photolibrary for all your years iPhone images with different smart albums ( finding range from 1 to 31 of that month ) or separate .photolibrarys by year. ?? thanks in advance
in other words do you have one photos Library or one by year? my phone has more than one years worth of snaps plus uploads from my camera and edits?

I have been using Picasa for years and have been keeping it up-to-date and as of today, Picasa is no longer able to work. The thing I will miss most is face recognition. RIP Picasa - October 2019. For those of you that have a Mac, DEEP by Ironic Software is a very strong tool that can allow you to search for photos by colors, if you need a certain color theme, or if you are looking for a picture similar to another and you find the one but can't find the other. You load the one that you did find and have it search for a similar color or another set of criteria. Very nice tool to use and it also incorporates tags for those of you who use tags. If anyone knows of similar software to Picasa with face recognition, I would appreciate a heads up. Thank You.

Dear Dave. Thank you for very good tips and suggestions. While creating my smart albums I have encounter a problem. As suggested, I first deleted all my previous albums. I then created a Folder for a specific year, and then created a smart album with the two suggested rules. When introducing the first rule (date captures-is in the range-date interval) for the specific date interval, I got all the photos for that specific year. BUT, when I introduced the second rule "album-is not- any), the number of photos went from 3912 photos to 293. Apparently the program is still remembering that some photos used to belong to other albums. Do you have a tip to avoid this error?

David, as always a good presentation. However, can you do a presentation on a more advanced level? For example, how can I add a title or description to multiple photos rather than one at a time. I'm fairly adept at Photos and I get the whole concept of albums, folders and favorites. But, I'm trying to straighten out the main "Photos" tab of the 40,000 + pictures I have. I have scanned and converted 35mm slides and photographs to digital. Problem is that are dated when I scanned them and not when they were taken. I know I can change the date, but only one at a time. There must be a better way to change dates all at once or in batch. Also, I know putting text on a photo can be done through the edit mode but again it's one at a time. Is there an easier way to add text directly to a photo. For example, when I use my Apple TV to show photos (not slide show) without a description or title on the picture, people will ask me where's that or who is that. I use Proshow Gold to do great slideshows and absolutely love the product. But when it comes to straight photos, and showing them I need to arrange the main inventory of all my pictures. Again Thanks

David, if on Mac, set up is as mentioned in this video - "download original to MAC" ; then if I were to delete the photos on phone completely from photo app ; will this delete everything from iphoto library on MAC. Scared to delete the pics on phone. so I guess what I am asking is once pic in iphoto library on MAC; is it safe to delete pics from the phone.

When you say the software recognizes the dates of your photos, does that mean the date that you uploaded the photos or the date that the photos were actually taken? I want to upload some photos that I took two years ago. Second question what is the storage capacity of Mac Photos, i.e. how many photos can I expect to be able to store on my Mac?

Hello, thanks for your video. I'd like to use photos for my workflow but as i'm using raw files, it takes a lot of place in my cloud. So do you have a tip to avoid upgrading my package ? Thanks

I’m new to the world of iMac having only used Windows before. The tutorials have been invaluable to me and liked the thought of eventually organising my pictures. I’m now pulling my hair out as I seem to have lost the sidebar in Photos. It WAS there then Poof! It’s gone and I can’t figure out how to get it back. Under the ‘View’ tab the turn on sidebar button is ‘greyed’’ out. Can anyone help a man of advancing years (!) get back on track and suggest a fix to get the sidebar back?

Strictly speaking, you remove a photo from an album, you don’t delete it. However, if you right click and press the Command Key, then you can delete a photo in an album. In that case, it deletes it from the library as well.

David I have a question re iCloud. You mentioned in one of your videos (I have watched a few in the last few days!) that you can turn off iCloud on one of your devices if you dont want all your photos on all devices. A long time ago an Apple employee told me if I turned off iCloud I would lose all my photos from the devices that I didnt initially put them on i.e. because I put them on my ipad first and they go to my iMac via iCloud, the ones on the imac would automatically delete. Is this true as I would like to turn iCloud off on my ipad.

I wanted the photos to move across to the album but instead it seems to be duplicating them, thus using up more storage? How do you move them to an album.

Just a suggestion to help is to create a smart album than only contains photos that are not in an album. It is then easy to see what still needs organising.

Karl, I agree 100%. I really dislike Photos and hope that my iPhotos keeps being supported into the future. They do a lot of similar things, of course, but there is no way to organize on Photos that is half as efficient and helpful as Events on iPhoto.
