Johnny Carson was so amazing! His greatest gift, was his ability to connect with just about anyone. I love the moment at 8:21 where he says, while touching Kinison, "it's good to have you here". He was putting Kinison at ease. He recognized both his enormous talent, and insecurities at the same time. This was real show business... Professionals.
Carson had his irregular moments though when he would switch moods on guests, but most of the time, ppl that visited the show, he would deliver the service of making them look great. Outside of that, he was an awful person. Pat Cooper said in his book that he was awful in contrast to his personality on television where you figured there was something wrong with him. I am not trying to put him down. I am trying to deliver honesty. I think people watched him not for being funny. His personality sold them to start liking his humor. I saw Sam one night at the Comedy Store in Hollywood, he went on about 1am after the headliner. We had never heard of him. Back then I used to record shows on my mini-tape recorder so I could remember jokes later. Sam's set was so funny, all you could hear on my tape was me laughing to the point of choking. I almost walked out because I couldn't take it. Afterwards everyone was walking to their cars you could hear lots of "OHHHHH OH OH OHHHH" echoing in the dark. About a month later he appeared on Rodney Dangerfield's Young Comedians.
He was one of a kind, definitely! Wow, I wish I could have seen him live! I remember being upset when Sam was here @ The Orpheum theatre in Omaha, Ne. I think it was '89 or '90, and My boyfriend's friend won 2 tickets to the show! My boyfriend got to go & tickets were sold out, so I was a little upset, but I was hoping Sam would make it back again sometime, sadly, he never got that chance.
My first comedian when I was 15 and listened to him religiously. Leader of the Banned, Live from Hell, Have you seen me lately and Louder than Hell. Honestly know every word on all of them.
I about fell off the couch laughing when I saw this live back in the day. At first, I was thinking, “Man, Sam is a comedian who can really sing... and then, pow!!!” So glad to find it here!
I miss him so much these days. I always looked forward to his act very time he was on TV. He always let me laughing so hard it would hurt... It's been a long time since I laughed like that.... The 80's and 90's truly were best of times.
I was lucky enough to briefly meet sam backstage after one of his shows in winston-salem, nc - 1987. He was definitely wired up but what a great thrill it was to greet him and shake his hand.
No lie, he had me completely fooled for the first 2 minutes of this video. I legitimately believed he was seriously singing. He actually had a good voice. That’s not an entirely easy song to sing, especially for a non-professional singer. At first I thought it might be a dubbed voice but quickly realized it was him. A comedy legend who was taken too soon. Sadly, a prime example of how excess drugs and alcohol can destroy even the greatest of talents. In his comedy prime he released one of the top 10 greatest comedy specials of all time but was never able to repeat the feat. Can’t help but think he flew a little close to the sun with his new fame and took his partying way too far. RIP to a great inspiration. Thank you for your gut wrenching comedy and for your thoughtful and confidence inducing lectures.
A high point in my lifelong appreciation of comedy was seeing Sam in concert twice, once front row center. I think I probably caught just about all his TV appearances too. I remember this one well. At the time he first started getting national TV gigs, his energy, his intensity, his balls out outrageousness was so unique, so truthful, so explosively out of the blue spot on for its time. I almost fell out of my chair the first time I saw him on TV. I was laughing so hard I thought I was going to pass out. He rose in popularity very very quickly...he just tapped a nerve of pent up frustration and anger and said what a lot of us had thought or felt but not said out loud. I didn't necessarily agree with half the shit he said in a literal way, but there was an emotional truth to what he was saying that was undeniable and released a huge charge for a lot of people. And he did it with genuine humor, not just ideas, or checking ideological boxes. When I saw him at the Paramount in Seattle, the place was packed, mostly men but a decent number of women too. The raw emotion in the room was palpable. It was intense...there was anger in it for sure...but the overwhelming vibe was laughter. Lots and lots of laughter. When he did the "phone call from Hell" thing...staged or not, it was cathartic and so fuckin' funny.
You don't understand what watching an old show does to you until you get old yourself. Watching Carson brings me back to younger days, when the ambition was innocent, and blind.
There’s the Sam we all knew and loved. You are missed!
Much more to him than we knew. Seems like a good guy.
Sam is great comedian RIP I hope you are making God laugh
you know his rolling in the isle
Carl Carlson **aisle** - isle is short for 'island ' - I strongly suggest to find a dictionary😒📙 - to read📖😒 and learn 😏🙂👍👍✌...
I was raised Pentecostal so I know what he's talking about. What a great loss to comedic world. One funny man
Man alive... Sam and Johnny, two completely different artists, just feeding perfectly off each other. Absolutely awsome!
Sam was a no holds barred super talent and the comedy world missed out in the long run. Johnny is a legend in his own right as well.
Hard to believe he’s been gone 27 years.
I saw him live at Harry C’s in Rancho Cucamonga. The place sat out in the middle of a vineyard.
RIP Sam
Sam on Carson- Russian Dixieland Jazz Band , and announcement about an exciting episode of the show Benson awesome fine and thanks for posting
My first comedian when I was 15 and listened to him religiously. Leader of the Banned, Live from Hell, Have you seen me lately and Louder than Hell. Honestly know every word on all of them.
Johnny, Ed, and the other guest all have big genuine smiles on their faces.
I about fell off the couch laughing when I saw this live back in the day. At first, I was thinking, “Man, Sam is a comedian who can really sing... and then, pow!!!” So glad to find it here!
Two of the greatest of the greats-----inimitable characters each! Wonderful stuff ;-)
The candle that burns twice as bright burns half as long.
4 Kings graced that stage that night. What a great clip.
Johnny Carson was one of a kind, and so was Sam. RIP to these two greats.
Glad I lived through the time Carson and Kinison were at they're best.
Wow missed that show this is great thanks
I miss him so much these days. I always looked forward to his act very time he was on TV. He always let me laughing so hard it would hurt... It's been a long time since I laughed like that.... The 80's and 90's truly were best of times.
This is amazing -
This of course is a gem -
Every straight man can relate to this
The boy spent some time in the choir, but still remained true to himself. Can I get a witness followed by an amen.
Feel like I'm sitting with Yoda! Johnny's laugh! Love it!
I was lucky enough to briefly meet sam backstage after one of his shows in winston-salem, nc - 1987. He was definitely wired up but what a great thrill it was to greet him and shake his hand.
I did not know he sang so well. Just another reason to love the guy.
Kinison was great! Good band at the end too!
I am glad that I came across this as I forgot how funny and talented Sam Kinison was.
First time I heard Sam I was driving home from work and I was out of control laughing.
Carson's laugh after the Yoda joke made Kinison's career in one night.
Great Johnny. Great Sam. Great Dixieland Band. Great show! 5 stars!
And "Bob" to the right of Sam Kinison is Robert Townsend
@@linosdial Never would have known - thank you!
@@linosdial I was wondering who that was, Thanks 😊
Sam was a talent in many ways
