This first incarnation of Kinison had 30 minutes that was just unstoppable, and he knew it. One of the best comedy spots in history. This conflagration of the early material and his personality was dynamite.
I can't even imagine how honoured I would be if I were Lou... being able to tell your friends and grandchildren I was the first person Sam Kinison ever did crowd-work with on national TV... on LETTERMAN!
I requested this one about a month ago. So happy to see it in a pure clip. Kinison was a comet blazing across the sky. We won't see the likes of him again.
A unique man and comedian, total character. He cracks me up quite a bit. The definition of unafraid and willing to proclaim his thoughts to challenge individual thinking. A yeller but it’s actually funny, Rogan yells too but he doesn’t have the inflection of absurdity but with the relatability that makes Sam’s a good listen.
Rogan has nothing to do with Kinison: Kinison used his priest experience to deliver his stand up comedy in an unique way, unlike any other. There's method in his madness.
This example of early Kineson really shows what an innovative unique style he had. His later stuff never quite matched this in sheer hilarity. I guess you can only be truly new and a total surprise once, and Sam was definitely that.
I remember watching this when it originally aired. To say I was confused is an understatement, but having just had one of my many failures trying to find a girlfriend I was able to relate.
What amazing to me about all these Letterman clips that are now coming out is how much more committed the show was to being funny for its own sake compared to the stuff that is similar in format that’s on tv today. And with a really high success rate along with some fun failures. Not seeing many fun failures these days. Not tolerated, perhaps.
That Northeast crowd had no idea, that first “loud” part was straight Pentecostal Christian preaching, goes on all over the South and rural US every Sunday and Wednesday nights. That’s what Sam did for real, before comedy.
I've bn saying that everytime i see an ad for feed the starving kids. Go where the food is ....by the sea. ...etc....what's their government doing, eating rib roasts and letting their ppl starve.. Sam knew his stuff

Sam was orginal. After Sam’s last joke you could see Dave in the back laughing hysterically to himself when the lights first come up. Love Dave’s version of the primal scream. 😆 First time I saw that part.
Thanks be to Dave for bringing so many legendary comedians to the Ed Sullivan Theater.. Sam Kinison, Dave Chappelle, Bill Hicks and of course the fabulous Martin Short.
@@MTVCOPS Hicks wasn’t cut for time though…the network excised it from the broadcast in cowardice because he made so many anti-religion statements. I loved when Dave apologized to Bill Hicks’ mother in person for cutting the set and then played it in full.
@@keefriff99 It wasn't just religion stuff, it was jokes about disabled people, anti-abortion in a very dark tone. The year was 1993, the world was a whole other place, there was only two major late night shows at the time competing for the audience... Letterman aired the presentation only in 2009, almost two decades later and as much as I love Letterman, he was wrong in this. But Letterman had Hicks 12 times on his show besides this one unfortunate time, can't ignore this.
Between John Belushi and Sam Kinison, the world TRAGICALLY lost TWO COMPLETE COMEDIC GENIUSES ... because of substance abuse ... John was overdosed ... Sam was killed by a drunk driving teen ... The world is SO deprived because of these tragedies ...
I really used to enjoy Sam's stuff and I especially liked his part in Back to School with Rodney Dangerfield as a teacher of History-I think. No one like him before or after~!!
Except that we and MANY others paid money to see him perform both before and after your lone example. He was liked as a preacher as well. Just not for his comedy. To boldly make such a non-factual accusation is rather foolish. Especially considering said accusation is entirely based upon personal opinion and not objective truth.
He was a certifiable maniac…hilarious though. Truly a one of a kind whose lifestyle was even more outrageous than his stage act. It’d be fascinating to see how his comedy changed in modern times had he not died. Some of his material from the ‘80s was truly vile.

40 years later and that still stands up as funny. What an original!

You are right since he is 6ft under. We all will join him one far 😂😂
Sam Kinison left this world before i was born 😢😢
so grateful for the internet giving us the ability to witness legendary comedy

YOU LIVE IN A DESERT
Rogan doesn’t yell stop it
Kinison was so good Letterman did an impression of him after he left the stage 😂
Dave is in the back cracking the f up . LOL
Full preacher mode at the beginning, not sure I've ever seen a clip of him actually doing it
There is audio of it on TH-cam of his last sermon in early 1982
1985, what a time. Guy was a legend and Dave warned you.
One of the greats. R.I.P. Sam
That bit about weeds and the sandwich! Bro!! 😂😂😂😂😂😂
HE´S STILL THE GREATEST STAND UP EVER, SO FUNNY!
His appearances on the Stern show were so legendary. Especially when he came on to Carol Alt. RIP Sammy so many laughs.
Was a teen in the 80s. What a crazy decade. 😀
I sure loved this guy. Id start laughing when he walked on stage knowing what was about to come. Totally unique.
RIP Sam.... never forgotten😂😂👍🏻
“Don’t feed him yet” 😂🤣😂
‘Back in the mud hole’ 😂
one of the best to ever do it. super nice guy off camera as well.
Raw comedy at its finest! The world was not ready. :)
This appearance is indeed epic. Kinison rocks!
Sam Kinison would’ve made a great Penguin and Joker
Dave cracking up at 6:09 👍
The man was a prophet, bringing truth in the form of comedy.
I remember watching this set on Letterman in 1985 as clear as day. The bit with Lou in the audience is all-time gold. Sam was so dang funny.
This example of early Kineson really shows what an innovative unique style he had. His later stuff never quite matched this in sheer hilarity. I guess you can only be truly new and a total surprise once, and Sam was definitely that.
According to his brother, and a lot of others after his first actual written routine. He just drowned himself in booze and coc.
@@Ledhead223 He was clean when he died. Just coming back from his honeymoon when they were hit by a drunk driver. 😢

I've watched this several times and I laugh every time even though I know what's coming. Sam was one of a kind.
Back when society knew how to take a joke.
❤😂 good comment 👍🏻
Dave cracking up in the background 🤣

How have I not liked this video already…. Sam Kinsinson Thank god for we will all die 💪🏼✊🏼👊🏼
That Northeast crowd had no idea, that first “loud” part was straight Pentecostal Christian preaching, goes on all over the South and rural US every Sunday and Wednesday nights. That’s what Sam did for real, before comedy.
Is that Mets 3B Howard Johnson in the crowd??
The finishing tune from the Rolling Stones was the cream on top...
6:08 Letterman laughing in the back ground is epic
Got married the first time at 49, I made the face. 😮
Freeze-frame 1:38, the couple (I assume) just behind his left shoulder are like “omg so true lmao… our marriage IS hell!”
40 years ago it was a joke.
Now in 2023 it is reality.
Marriage is over.
We need more Sam Kinison’s in this day and age!
Damn that was brilliant. Thanks for posting this.
Absolutely Fantastic 😂
nothing but love here

Lou was a life long bachelor and has been happy ever since!
I've thought of going into stand up comedy but I fear I won't ever be able to be on the same level kinison was
You wouldn't be
this was great!!!
Perfection!
All Sam kinison lovers should watch “back to school”. He has a role in it.

This is my first time seeing him perform after years of hearing Diaz and Rogan talk highly about him, he’s hilarious 😂 especially his screams

Letterman is just dying in the background. Kinison was that funny.

This genius was a mere 31yrs old at the time of this performance
I think that’s Sam’s brother Bill sitting behind Lou…

Sam scared Lou, 250lb Lou. Is that not enough?
