Makes you realise how tough these guys were. If they got that far wearing those clothes with ropes tied around thier waists they would leave all the modern climbers in their wake. Imagine that fitness and guts with modern eqipment? be a cake walk to them. RIP you 2 young men. Pure GUTS.

I seriously doubt leaving people in their wakes lol. They used what was the best at that time and gave it no further thought. They were the type of people who today take selfies on top of radio towers. Back then it was the pampered aristocratic class that got the attention. I’ll bet you when they actually faced their death on that mountain they probably wished they were somewhere else.

Didnt even know who George Mallory was until 1999 when I saw the story about finding his body on the mountain. It fascinated me greatly. I like many others didnt have all the information and then listening to others opinions decided they probably did not make it to the top. However, after digging in to the much of the information Im now 99% sure they got to the summit and I will teach my children that these two were the first to summit everest. This primarily based on:
    1. the eyewitness account of Odell where they were last seen at the base of the summit ridge and importantly the TIME.
    2. The knowledge that they certainly did NOT follow the modern route and instead traversed below the first and second steps bypassing them entirely.
    3. The location of Mallory's body,, site of the accident.
    4. The location of Irvine's ice axe found in 1933.
    5. Mallory's googles found in pocket. Confirms accident happened on descent as it was evening and sun was going down. Otherwise he risked snow blindness which happened to another team member on a summit attempt just prior to.
    True hero's.

You can see how Leo Houlding and Conrad Anker has climbed the second steep removing the fixed ladder successfully, and climbed both of them the North Face of the Everest with the same gear than Mallory and Irvine. ( The Wildest Dream). At the end Leo says that "they (Mallory and Irvine) definitely were capable of doing it".Leo is a awesome climber but he didn´t have any experience doing trekking or climbing that high. so he was in a similar position than Irvine was, and he did the second step. So if Leo says so (that "they definitely were capable of doing it") means in my opinion that there is a high posibility that Irvine and Mallory reached the summit. Not many people has climbed the Second Step without the help of the ladder, but Leo did, and i believe that Mallory as well.

    • @peterlovett5841
      @peterlovett5841 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

@J MG When did Houlding and Anker climb the second step without the fixed ladder (placed there by the Chinese in 1975)? In the book "Into The Silence" by Wade Davis on the 3 British expeditions to Everest in the 1920s' there is an epilogue based on the finding of Mallory's body by Conrad Anker in which Anker expresses the opinion that he was unable to climb the second step without using the ladder and that was with all the modern equipment that Mallory and Irvine did not have. The step is in two parts; the first 45 feet is doable but the second part is vertical rock (this is the part where the ladder is) and Mallory and Irvine did not have sufficient rope to get back down if they had managed to get up the step. Anker also had other reasons for his belief they did not make the summit in addition to the difficulty of scaling the second step.

With those photos you realize how handsome he was and how young. I think Mallory was was nice looking too. It truly is so tragic. But I truly believe that they both summited Mount Everest. because the picture of Ruth he said he was going to put on Mount Everest when he reached the top was not among his belongings. Nah, that a wish without logic.
Look at the gear and their clothes and knowing how treacherous even with today's tech. Add to that they were going into the unknown, a place where every rock, ledge cornice was foreign to them.
They were last seen at the 2nd step before weather moved in. It would not be unreasonable to say they met their match at 8,600 meters and turned back so they may try another day.
The factors of weather, altitude and temperatures have remained the same, they are constant values for us, to conject the performance of their clothes and gear.
Maybe they planned to return the next year with improved equipment after having a look and then knew what to expect.

They did have numerous still cameras in 1921, 1922 and 1924, and on the latter two trips they had an accomplished photographer and amateur filmmaker who brought all kinds of equipment, including movie cameras and a portable darkroom. Proceeds from the 1922 films helped finance the 1924 expedition. A lot of these guys were inventors by necessity. And all this stuff was packed 400 miles across Tibet by yaks or literally on men’s backs, walking at 14, 16, 17k plus feet elevation. It was a really astonishing achievement to do what they did, although their porters and so-called “coolies” don’t get anywhere near the recognition they deserve. All of them, British and Tibetan or Sherpa, were incredibly strong, brave and resilient.

Do you really think the would have survived over 8 hours above 8600m in a gale wearing wool pants? The reason it took another 24 years for Hillary and Tenzing to summit is it took that long for the technology to improve.
They were seen approaching 2nd Step, 8700m, then a two-hour climb from the South Summit to the Hillary Step, one to two hours to climb the cliff, and then another 20 minutes from the top of the Hillary Step to the summit of Mount Everest.
I mean we can wishas it keeps the mystery going but applying what we know it doesn't pass the sniff test.

A.Irvin looks bit healthy/fat for Mt Everest Summit.... Odelle would be better choice.
B.Mallory was having pencil and paper with him , if he had reached the summit he must have noted down the time reached ,time spend, view etc as he noted down the pressure of oxygen on papers....
C.Climbing from North side is so unlucky until 1975, that people making to summit and no one believing them....🤷🤦

Sandy was ripped he was stronger than George Mallory but Sandy lacked the climbing skills. They put in the Everest report that Sandy and Odell were the 2 strongest of the group. Sandy was far from fat

Podeis ver como Leo Houlding y Conrad Anker escalaron con exito el segundo escalon retirando la escalera fija , e hicieron la cara norte del Everest con un equipo similar al de Mallory e Irvine. (El sueño mas salvaje-The Wildest Dream).

His body was almost without clothes when they found his corpse. The fact there was not his wife's foto on him does not mean he made it. So many years have been passing since he was exposed to snow, ice and wind...

Let me rephrase: a large part of his body was exposed due to clothes atmospheric wear. Just look for his photo in Google engine: typying Mallory Irvine and asking for photos.

It's not fact. That's the whole point, that's why there is such a divide. You are entitled to your own opinion, as are we all. Personally i just don't know, why?, because there isn't any fact to prove it either way. I'd like to think they made it. Either way, with that gear, and the knowledge they had at the time of high altitude and the effect it had on the human body, they were brave men, that surely is not up for debate. But, dont sound so offensive, it makes you sound like a jealous child..

Mistery or not, technically they could not make it according to present alpinistic knowledge. I heard Messneri about that and I believe his opinion is correct. Anyhow they were very good climber for that period. Unfortunatly materials and technique were still at the beginning.
    Yes, they were heroes.

Its not al authentic but a few, like the foto schoot with the two on the lefht ho are Mallory and Irvine (the one with the dark jacket is Mallory). The shoot at the tent is the last foto off Mallory and Irvine. The better images are fake!!

You know they never made it. Fact after fact. Read and you will see. I dont understand this romanticism. Same as when Amelia Earheart flew blind to a 5.000 miles faraway island without any navigation at all. Of course she got lost. Lets make a movie ... ha. Sir Edmund Hillary and Mr. Tenzing Norgay. Way up, made it and way down. The hell of a difference ! !
