- This is the home of the shepherd. Come take a tour inside a 1880's mobile home. The shepherd's life was a life of solitude, comprising of some dogs and bands of sheep. However the accommodations were quite sufficient, containing the stove, cupboards, table, a bed and various facilities that suited the tenant.

I've been following your newest build in 2024 as well and came across this and have really enjoyed both. My dad was born in one of these wagons in 1931 in Wyoming.
In the ‘80’s & early ‘90’s I worked in the field in the microwave & fiber optic communications construction for a major company. I saw herders wagons like this several times. I never approached them. I also saw signs warning of cyanide grenades at baits. I never saw any evidence these herders wanted any interaction with people. I could be wrong, but thought it best to respect my instincts. These were FAR OUT in the ‘back country’. Thank you showing what one possibly looked like inside.

The vinyl floor in my grandmother's kitchen was the same as what is on the floor and benches of that sheep wagon. 👍😀😎

Like others have commented on the 2024 sheep wagon build, this popped up and I do remember when this one was posted and viewed by us and it will serve to get an idea of how the current one will turn out. Dave, I don’t know if it was you or YT who reposted this video but it will excite us to see the progress you have made on the current SW. I knew the door had to favor the side of the wagon to give room for the stove and position the brake lever. The end walls and covering for the top will be interesting to see how you make those, also if you include cubbyholes? Thanxz

Our newly acquired sheep wagon has a stove just like that. It's missing the ash box though so I'll have to make one. Thanks for all of your videos, they will provide a wealth of knowledge to us while working on ours!

Having lived with wood heat in east central Minnesota for many years, having control of a wood stove is a necessity. Mom baked lots of bread, and so many times there were five loaves freshly out of the Monarch wood/electric stove oven just when we kids got home from school.... All our Meals cooked plus Bath and Laundry water heated on that stove, too. Thanks, Mom!!!! Great Memories, Mr. Dave!

I've always had a fascination with the sheep wagon, maybe because I drove by one or more of them several times a year in western South Dakota.
Storage mentioned in 4.07 is in Finland used to store firewood, kindling stuff (birch bark, old newspapers). Wood is stored in barn, woodshed etc. which are same humidity and temperature a outside. In winter logs are brought inside day or two before burning, to let them dry and warm a little bit, especially when logs are stored under sky and are covered with snow. So waking up in the morning about 5 am, it is much more comfortable to use previously inside stored wood and make fire and then go feed the cattle, clean the yard from snow etc.
So there are still many houses built after WW2, which have renovated in the 70's still having this storage in the kitchen. My neighbor removed it just a year ago when he renovated the kitchen.

I've eaten cornbread cooked in an iron skillet on the home's 'wood cook stove'....as well as a lot of other goodies.

I hunted deer on a Wyoming sheep ranch 600 sections big. They had a wagon just like this and the herder stayed there so many years and then went back to Spain. There was a large barn to put the sheep if there was really bad weather.
The stove being a must have item on the high Wyoming plates. An 1880's RV for sure.

We have something very similar in the UK, although because the distances are much smaller the wheels are not that big, bringing the whole thing closer to the ground. Some have skids, not wheels. Today, those still left are mostly used as accommodation for short stay vacationers, and serve as easy camping.
Saw them on skids as Line Camps against Blizzards in far pastures of the M&T Cattle Co.as a Boy

The main rule of sheepwagons are they should always be set facing east. The most important seat in the wagon is next to the stove, givi ng the person access to the cupboard and the stove and table. The first sheep wagons were built at Rawlins, Wyoming by James Candlish.

Thanks for the tour. I saw one of these going west on I-90 in Washington a month ago and its shape was very similar to this but it had the automobile tires. William O. Douglas mentions the shepherds and their wagons in his book about his early years hiking in the Cascades above Yakima. I enjoy putting something real to his reminisces of the early 1900's.

I've heard most of these sheep herders were Basque back in the day. I believe I still saw one in action near the old ghost town of Bodie California a few years ago. It seems a lonely life style, but to each his own.

First, I must thank you for sharing your talents! I totally enjoy your restoration skills and find myself searching for another video! Now, I have a question. I have owned and used for years a homemade sheep camp. However, over the years the stove has rusted, mostly throughout the firebox. I have searched for a replacement, but have yet to locate one. Have you any idea where a stove could be found, or if I should make the effort to rebuild it? Thank you again.

Enjoyed the tour, especially the stove. I had no idea how a wood stove can be controlled for burners or the oven.
Late in their period they got pretty advanced and tricky with chambers and routing of heat. I remember a camping stove dating late 1930 ish that had a water jacket, copper pipes running through the water jacket to a separate tank, and, even a small fan that was driven by the heat escaping through the chimney. UK made, quite quality, unfortunately, unbranded or better said, someone had taken the branding off with an axe, destroying the door at the front. Such is life.

That little door - maybe a way of letting some light in with the door closed, if the door was unglazed? Very interesting, thanks for the tour.
It's a vent to reduce smoke or condensation, depending on the type of seal/treatment of the canvas covering and the lining (used when migrating off the highlands to lower pasture, prep 4 winter).
That storage bin at 4 minutes I'd guess was used for firewood. There's one just like that at a property belonging to my in-laws.
I think that tilting storage bin at 4:06 was used for storing firewood. My grandmother had an exactly similar bin for that purpose at home.
More likely to be for flour. You use quite a lot of flour in the sort of camp cooking that would have been done in the wagon. My aunt had two bins like that in her house (built in the early 1950s) that were used for flour and sugar. You use more sugar in a house because of jam making and so on.
I might add that my grandmother cooked on a stove like that, but bigger, until she died in 1973.
I'm looking at the same work as a sailboat interior...
now i see why the specialty wagon opposed to a typical covered wagon ... comfort . is that idea brought over from Europe or was it because of the free grazing in north america . did that wagon come with a tongue or shafts originally .thanks , another good video

Could be, that kind of flooring goes to the mid/late 1800s. It's probably linoleum, not vinyl.
Not vinyl, at all. And i often find it (in various patterns from bland to really ecstatic colors, patterns and shapes) in houses as old as 1850 even here in Europe.
It was added on later in the wagon's life span. Dave addressed it above.

Lol, I had that exact same linoleum in my kitchen back in the early 80’s. Talk about flashbacks! Then again I have to remind myself that was 40 yrs ago, where does the time go?

Must have been a frugal if not interesting lifestyle...I take it as there’s no water barrel to store water, they would have always been close to a supply for the sheep...
