    One very important information overlooked for the video on the Sony a6400 : At 24 FPS it is a 6K resolution downsampled to 4K so the image quality is absolutely fantastic. It's like filming on a Full Frame 35mm camera in 4K

    If Sony made a camera with the easy usability, flip screen, and ports of the 90D, we'd have the perfect sub $1,500 camera. The image quality on the Sony is far superior to the 90D. There are so many drawbacks with the a6400 though - I've read reviews saying the camera is almost "unusable even on a gimbal." To quote a popular B&H Photo critique of the z6400 "You can see the rolling shutter in static shots while your subject moves, and even when using it on a gimbal, you cannot escape it. If you try to post stabilize the footage, nothing but jello stabilized shots. It is absurd and essentially a waste of a camera release as I would have preferred them putting the IBIS in the camera and just call this the A6600 so we can all move on and get to filmmaking."
    Literally everything about the 90D is better except the image quality . . . as far as I can tell?

    7:30 I hate that this video was a victim of bad timing. Canon did add it later to both the 90D and EOS RP. I liked your review of the 90D. You were fair to a DSLR in a world where most consider DSLRs obsolete. Still, great job pimp. I was wanting to buy the 90D, but this review has me now considering the A6400.

    Love your videos. I've been pouring over TH-cam trying to decide on my next camera which I will use mainly for my cycling TH-cam channel. Currently using the 80D. My choice is down to the 90D, EOS R and the new Sony a6600. Price isn't really a major factor. 80% of the use will be for video. I've got my list of pros and cons but what would be your recommendation? Again, thank for the time you put into your videos. They've been really helpful. And by the way, I've heard that a new firmware update just came out for the 90D that gives 24 fps. Cheers.

      Holy cow! I’ve been watching your channel for literal years 🤯 I bought a giant anthem off of your content back in 2015 👍
      If price isn’t a barrier I’d probably go with the EOS R. It keeps you in the canon eco system but opens up access to canons log profile plus allows for their new lenses.
      The 90d is also a big 4K upgrade over the 80d if you want to stick with a crop sensor body plus the 90d is the first DSLR I’ve ever really liked.
      Sony isn’t bad but there are a few hassles that would make me stick with canon.

    Everyday Dad, I love the energy you bring to your videos! What is your main go to camera right now? You have used Panasonic G5, Sony 6400, Canon R, and Nikon Z6 in the past and stated they these are your favorite camera. I think all the major brands are producing good cameras, hard to justify switching systems from what you are already invested in. Seems like a lot of Pros, are still staying with their DSLR's until there is a economic justification to switch to mirrorless.

    The lack of 24fps has been an issue on other cameras, too. The DJI Mavic Mini, for instance, was originally derided for professional use because of its lack of 24fps and manual exposure and white balance controls. Like the 90D, this was "corrected" with a later firmware update. The lesson seems to have been learned by manufacturers, and I doubt we'll see many more instances of this oversight in future models.

    Looking at sample 4k vs 1080 on the 90D in uncropped mode its not easy
    to see that much difference. Its kind of like not setting your desktop on your PC to the
    native resolution of you monitor. on the 90D the crop mode should be
    utilizing the center portion of the sensor only and grabbing all the
    data from each pixel side by side. To where the uncopped mode its
    grabbing data from pixels that are not next to each other because it
    cant use the entire sensor or it would technically be 8K video.
    Theoretically a lower MP sensor should give sharper uncropped 4k video.
    Even smartphones shoot video in crop mode by default on the already tiny
    sensor they have. You just don't have the option to change it (without a 3rd party app). On
    DSLR's they give the option to use the full sensor because of the
    interchangeable lenses and their respective focal lengths.

      Very short sighted
      1. YT algorithm gives slight preference to videos that have the option of 4k and other larger formats.
      2. Videos are forever, and in however many years it takes 4k and above will be the standard and FHD will be a size of the past. Future proofing is always good.
      2.5 - Also for shorts and documentaries, especially on streaming platforms like Netflix it's a requirement. 4k gives you options to sell your work.

    • @LordArioh
      @LordArioh 5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@GavinClay if content sucks or gets outdated every year, no 4K is gonna future proof it. I saw a lot of channels grew up from zero to millions of subs in 1080p and tons of 4K channels that stay under 200K for years. It doesn't mean that YT don't recommend 4K more often, it means that their content is just not good enough.
      If you're serious about production then ofc go for 8K. Otherwise simple vlogs, reviews and other stuff no one cares.
      I myself watch everything in 720p, because quality of the talking face is the least important thing to me.

    • @GavinClay
      @GavinClay 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@LordArioh I have made no mention of quality of content or Inferred that inferior content is made up for by resolution.
      Saying that you personally don't watch content in Full HD or seeing that creators can grow more substantially with only 1080p again proves the point.
      Years ago TH-cam did not support 1080p but now they do and a lot of creators switched from their old camera resolution to the new 1080p.
      How many content creators still upload in 480p or 720p only?
      Again, very short sighted.

      @@GavinClay let's see, they say Peter McKinnon made over a million subs in one year, shooting with 1DX2. nope, more than a year uploads all in 1080p.
      Uploading now in 720 is harder than 4K, because most cameras hardly even support the format.
      If you wanna prove to yourself that you can splash extra cash on 4K video and editing gear and spend extra time editing and rendering stuff that most will watch in 720p and forget about it, you're welcome.
      For majority of content on YT it's not worth the hustle.
      All channels I mentioned grew significantly in a last few years when 4K was already a futureproofer. Braille Skateboarding even made millions subs uploading in 720p because they didn't have enough memory cards.
      To grow a channel it's all about how you sell it. Not resolution.
      In 2025 will you watch Peters video What's in my camera bag from 2018 because it's futureproofed with 4K? No. No one will.

    Question...at 11:26 into the video, i.e. vlogging test, I noticed that the 90 d appeared much softer than the sony. Did the sony have a better lens or better focus? Could L glass improve the sharpness on the 90 d? What exactly were the settings on the 90 d in regards to focus? I know canons can be sharp when pressed with lens selection. @@josemendezfr that's brilliant news, just shows that despite in this video 'dad' saying "It'll never happen", Canon were obviously listening! Still tied between these two cameras though, I have the 80D at the moment and the only reason that I want to ditch it is because of video quality, it just doesn't give me that immaculately sharp image that other TH-camrs seem to have. In this comparison, the Sony clearly has the better quality sensor but the feature-set of the 90D make it very wantable!

    I am in the unusual position of looking at buying both the Sony A6600 and Canon 90D. I prefer the Sony for video but I shoot Canon for sports stills and have a lot of Canon glass and the 90D is the best Canon DSLR for 4K video yet made, and will give me lens choices I don’t have on the Sony, especially at the long end (400-800mm) and specialty lenses such as shift and a long macro (180mm).
    I am curious - you imply that the A6400 is the best Sony and not the A6600. Why? Is that just because of price, or is there some other advantage the A6400 has that I am missing out on? For me, the headphone jack alone makes the A6600 a much more useful camera.
    Yeah, small DSLR’s like the 90D are the best feeling cameras in the hand, especially for a male. But the 24fps thing is a huge problem. I am in a PAL region, so shoot 25fps and there is no effective visual difference between 24 and 25. BUT, whenever doing anything artistic in a group, the group choice is always 24fps so only the Sony is eligible. Does Canon really want only Sony’s and Lumix on these low budget short film sets? Idiots. They think only amateurs buy the 90D and don’t realise a lot of pro’s buy cheaper cameras too and enthusiasts are more likely to want to go artistic and look for the 24 even though it is only 1% of the time. It is a standard for a reason
    BTW crop on a crop is brilliant. APS-C is the same as 35mm movie stock. A crop essentially gives us a 16mm option. 16mm has a cult following in film due to visual look as well as being perfect dof for documentary and longer reach for sport and wildlife, and to have both formats together is very desireable. MFT has that 16mm advantage but doesn’t have the ability to give us the ability to switch on a 35mm mode for creative reasons.

    If you shoot 4k the Sony wins. It can generate in camera proxy files! That's a game changer, a feature only available on the very high end cams. And strange, but the a6400 looked so much sharper. At first, I thought it was the kit lenses, but now I think it's the Sony sampling from a 6k image. I don't think the Canon 90d does this.

    The only thing I didn’t like about the 90d is no “All I” compression. It’s IPB. Granted I had to watch your video on a 4K monitor to see the compression artifacts, it’s still there and makes the eyes not look so in focus even though they are. I had to deal with this with the 6d mkii and it’s fine until you get about 4’ away from the camera, then the file looks funky. Still excited to get the EOS R on Black Friday though haha

    • @joshzaring
      @joshzaring 5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      William Ridenour the only thing I’d add to that is be careful with the apple monitors as they have built in sharpening on screen. I’d most definitely check on different monitors for sharpness, just like you should for color. I prefer using DNxHR over ProRes, but I mostly agree with the external recorder. In my case, I do a lot of location interviews for clients and the less gear I have to walk around with, the better. So mostly I’d recommend getting a camera that has good looking files in camera, instead of needing to add more expensive gear to a lesser camera just to achieve the same end goal. In my case, being responsible for the entire productions and needing the completed video the next day in most cases, I lean more toward gear that has as few crippled features as possible. Speed and quality are important.

    Canon 90D did get a 24fps firmware update.
    Honestly for me, the a6400 looks more kinda kid's toy rather than something that I can bring on a professional event or shoots. Also, Canon colors are just way waaaay better than Sony. The AF tracks in a natural way, replicating the best possible precision manual racking look. Canon is far easy to use and the best part is, batteries last long. Moreover, the lens options (native as well as third party) are bang for the buck, Sony just runs short on this. Glad I picked up a 90D and not any Sony APS-C. IBIS doesn't even matter for my work, mostly my rig is on a tripod, monopod or a gimbal where anyways I gotta disable the in camera stabilization if any.
    My suggestion- If you wanna grow as a professional photographer or film maker, just pick up that 90D and you wont regret later on. Else if you want a casual use camera, with less to no professional use, pick any of cheaper ones. A6400 makes no sense, unless I'm a travel blogger who needs a nifty kit.

Plus, the AF is so good that my friend's face was still in focus even as I bursted photos of him shooting a soccer ball. However, I had a weird problem where the ISO jumped really high suddenly, but it only happened in two photos and I turned it down before it could ruin more shots. I hope this helps.
