      Victor Chen she probably is hoping for a "skiing accident" if she fantasizes of getting into a car wreck there is no telling how far she will take this.. Especially since she is unable to afford the surgery.. It's messed up and people really need to quit with the excuses for this behavior it's not healthy.. She needs to learn how to be considerate of those who didn't have a choice for being stuck in a wheelchair for the rest of their live.. I don't feel bad for people like this it's just an attempt to get sympathy and attention from others..

Tube fed because of gastroparesis and have epilepsy plus POTS and a list of medical problems. People like her drive me mad, I understand it’s a mental illness. But all I want is to be normal, ever since a child I’ve wanted to be a nurse and I’ve had to realise that dream might not happen, maybe an ambulance dispatcher one day. I just can’t understand why someone would want to be in a wheelchair when they can walk perfectly normal. It’s like when I saw an old lady pushing someone up the hill at the hospital in a wheelchair, the person in the wheelchair just got up and walked up the hill with no crutches or walking stick, no limp, she didn’t seem breathless, just walked completely normally.

Moreover she is very much looking forward to visiting and learning to sitski with me. Apparently the existence of the Paralympics has completely passed you by. There are many paths to wisdom. One that is very effective is to find friends of great diversity. That way one may see the world from many different perspectives. I find that friends with gender variance are extremely helpful. A female to male transsexual may hate their female body. A male to female transsexual may hate their male body. Yet these two groups of people are not pissed off with each other. They recognise that they are fellow travelers on the same path, yet going in opposite directions. They are able to understand each other. I have found that exactly the same thing is true of disability. Hundreds of people with disabilities have sought to be my friend as a result of this video. They are more understanding of BIID than any other group of people. You are correct that many people with paralysis wish for it not to be so, though this is far from being universally true. Therefore they understand that I am on the same path, just traveling in the opposite direction. This makes for wonderful mutually supportive friendships. I am not pissed off with people who are paralysed, just as they are not pissed off with me. They appreciate that my situation validates their perspective. They also appreciate that my situation validates that they are not in any way lesser or inferior beings for being paralysed. We understand each other.
      My left leg has been partially paralysed since my accidental spinal cord injury in 2006. So I do know what you are talking about. I have, for example, been completely unable to run since my SCI. I would not wish this on anyone who did not want it. The key to mutual understanding is always to recognise that everybody is different. Different people desire different things. People being different does not make one person better than another person.
      So far, the only cure that has been found successful for treating BIID is acquisition of the needed impairment. Psychotherapy or medications have not been found effective. Those with BIID who have acquired the appropriate physical impairment describe a sense of intense relief from the burden of BIID, in addition to dissipation of the frequently associated depression. They are thus able to continue with happy and productive lives.
      Thank you for your interesting comments and kind words.

    As a paraplegic for 29 years (industrial accident at 19 years of age, helping a coworker) it's a bit offensive that she pretends to be paralyzed. I'm sure she parks in disabled parking spots and uses disabled bathroom stalls to "live the dream".. She needs some intensive Pacheco therapy before she really does become spinal cord injured. Although you can have a very fulfilling, happy life as a paraplegic or quadriplegic, it's a life no one should ever want to experience voluntarily. Not being able to walk is very minor issue, but the impact to bowel/bladder and sexual function are monumental adjustments for the newly injured. I sincerely hope she gets help before her fantasy is her new reality.

      this is a mental illness not someone being disrespectful. it isnt about you, its about themselves. in a way this is also a disability, a mental one. again, its not about you, its about them. they are dissatisfied with their limb, they dont see their limb as their own, their brain doesnt recognize it, and they want it gone. being mean to them will not help them, they will probably just amputate themselves and possibly die.

    • @Chloe69752
      @Chloe69752 11 ปีที่แล้ว +8

      Kelly: This is indeed a sensible suggestion, and one which suffices for many with BIID. It has worked for me during the last five years. I am a little confused as to what you mean by "playing pretend". I never pretend that I am paraplegic, nor have I ever told anybody that I am paraplegic. As for using a wheelchair, I have already explained here many times that my physician recommends it in order to reduce the likelihood of stroke.

    • @KellySmith555
      @KellySmith555 11 ปีที่แล้ว +37

      Chloe Jennings-White
      Well, the definition of playing pretend is to fantasize about something while acting it out. If you are not a paraplegic, and yet you get into a wheelchair and fantasize about being one, then you are playing pretend. Based on the video, that is what you basically said you are doing. Its not meant to be offensive, its just a statement of what you are doing. Plain and simple. Nothing in the video says anything about you having some kind of condition that confines you to a wheelchair to prevent stroke. I've personally never head of a doctor suggesting something like that, but then again I'm not doctor myself, so I wouldn't know. Honestly, I'm not sure what you mean by that. The video was pretty clear about your condition. "You want to be paralyzed because you think it will make you happy. You have a condition called BIID. You restrict the movement of you legs, and have started using a wheelchair full time. You want a surgery to paralyze yourself." Unless I missed something, there was no mention of stroke prevention or any other reason for you to be in the wheelchair beyond that of you wanting to be in a wheelchair. Now if that's not the case, then you should contact the people who made the video and tell them to get it straight, but given every other thing that this video says, personally I'd have to believe that is the case. Now, don't get me wrong, you have something that's been categorized as a mental condition, I don't judge you. If you want to live that way, there is nothing stopping you, least of all me or my opinion. My above suggestion was that you continue as you are so that you can keep the use of your legs and still feel disabled. That's all it was, that's all I intended for it to be.

      KellySmith555 You are absolutely correct that the video leaves out HUGE aspects of my life that are relevant to BIID. This is necessarily so since it is only ~5 minutes long. There exists an hour long radio program on National Public Radio which goes into much more detail about me and BIID. The director of the video here explicitly said that they wanted to leave out anything regarding my physical medical conditions. The ones of significance are as follows:
      Congenital moderate reverse slope hearing loss. Left septal leukoplasia since 1980. Fibromyalgia since August 1986. Category D T10-T12 spinal compression injury in December 2006. The SCI leaves me with chronic back pain, amongst many other things. This causes spikes in blood pressure which leave me at risk for stroke. Many people assume that a wheelchair is medically advised only for inability to walk. This is a misconception. Some people are prescribed a wheelchair in order to mitigate back pain. No I am not "confined" to a wheelchair. The exact words from my physician are "Use the wheelchair as much as practicable." She is well aware of my BIID, so she knew that I would have good tolerance of this. The bottom line is that you can not possibly know everything about my life in five minutes. The film crew was here for two full days in order to produce this video. The people making the video are very well aware of all these extra details. I have zero editorial control over what they put in and what they leave out. Simple mathematics will tell you that at least 95% of what I said necessarily got left out.
      I could go into a similarly detailed discussion about what is actually in my head when I'm using a wheelchair. But I don't want to bore people with a lengthy discourse about myself unless they express specific interest in a particular aspect. At any rate your suggestion is intelligent and well taken. Thank you for that.

      Chloe Jennings-White Hearing loss does not necessitate the use of a wheelchair. Septal Leukoplasia does not necessitate the use of a wheelchair. Chronic back pain does not necessitate the use of a wheelchair.They sure don't stop you flying down a ski slope whenever you fancy. There is no physical reason for you to pretend to use a wheelchair. No. Think about the act of purposefully paralyzing yourself. There is nothing about that that sounds desirable. Saw this from another video: This is Body Integrity Disorder. It's due to a disconnect in the parietal sensory S1 receptor in which normally gives a person body awareness. I.e. you can close your eyes and identify your body as your own and spatially account for all your limbs and fingers. Simply put, a person with Body Integrity disorder has a lesion in this pathway so that they do not recognize a portion of their bodies as their own. It's most common in the left arm. It's almost as if living with constant anxiety that a foreign being is growing on your body. As if a stranger is constantly touching you. This is why it was previously treated as anxiety/OCD. Amputation "completes" their body maps and they can now account for their entire bodies. Further studies are being done to understand this disease

      Actually there is no evidence linking BIID with diminished intelligence. I have a PhD from the University of Cambridge, I have been a vice president of two companies, I have more than a hundred published scientific papers. It betrays a profound ignorance of psychology to assert that psychological conditions imply low mental capacity. Try watching the movie "A Brilliant Mind".

    Speaking as a disabled person who have had no choice since she was 11, this women do it when it suits her, which leads me to think she wouldn't really want it 24/7 seeing as she is so educated i wouldn't have thought it would be such a stretch to save or take a loan out for the £15,000 that she need for the operation..
    Also if she did go and have it done then i 100% think she shouldn't be able to claime disable benefits as she choose it, life being disabled is not a picnic believe me

    • @Chloe69752
      @Chloe69752 10 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Annie: Thank you for elevating yourself above the kindergarten level of comment so frequently seen here. You make intelligent points which are worthy of response:
      1. I do not feel like a wheelchair is my only way to live. Trial and error has demonstrated to me that using a wheelchair beyond around 80% of a typical day brings no additional benefit to treating my BIID. This of course is a very common percentage usage for many people with physical disabilities, who indeed use a wheelchair when it suits them. I am assuming that your comment was not intentionally derogatory towards people with conditions such as multiple sclerosis..
      2. Skiing is an excellent treatment for my BIID. The primary muscle group used for skiing is the quadriceps. Since my left quadriceps are the muscles most affected by my accidental 2006 spinal cord injury (SCI), it follows that the act of skiing forces me to feel more disabled from this than by any other activity. Although I necessarily put 90% of my weight on my right leg while skiing, it is enough to cause major muscle spasms in my left leg as a result. Again this provides a strong physical validation of my SCI. Most beneficial of all is that the degree of monoparesis is sufficiently increased by skiing that a left leg brace is obligatory for a couple of days afterwards.
      3. Disability benefits in the USA are only for people whose ability to work is negatively impacted by their disability. I have been working all the time over the last four and a half years from a wheelchair. Nothing would change in this regard by the conversion of my monoparesis to monoplegia. Consequently, acquiring impairment from the surgery I seek does nothing at all to increase my eligibility for disability benefits. The idea is therefore completely irrelevant.
      4. Your saying "life being disabled is not a picnic believe me" is of course very true. However, this does not impart any new knowledge to me because I have myself been physically disabled since 1986. Yes, it sucks. I know! Even were this not the case, I spend the majority of my time most days talking with people who are physically disabled. Thus I am very familiar with the lives of people with everything from blindness to quadriplegia.
      5. Not that my finances are anybody's business, but in reality I have spent large amounts of money on supporting my wife who is mostly housebound due to disability. She is unable to drive, etc.
      You are more than welcome to ask any further questions you may have. I pledge to answer all of them in good faith. Thank you for your interest. I am sorry that I bug you. It is certainly not my intent.
      With very best wishes,
      ~ Chloe

      I'm sorry Chloe, but you do seem to choose to be disabled when it suits you. For example, when you got out of your house, you got out of your wheelchair and walked it down the stairs. How convenient.
      Ice skating is essential to me but I can't physically do it anymore because of my disabilities, and it kills my soul. I have lost so much due to my disabilities, and you definitely appear to only be "disabled when convenient" Honestly, you don't seem prepared to be 100% paraplegic.
      The fact that you also put other's in harms way is appalling and selfish. You should not be allowed to drive if you want to get into a car accident, and honestly can't even recall if your past accident was intentional or not.
      Also, how can you complain about how much being disabled "sucks" and then also want to be wheelchair bound? I understand that might be a fantastic thought, but since you haven't actually lived as a wheelchair-bound person, it's a bit ridiculous to know that's what you want, while simultaneously admitting how much it "sucks."
      You're intelligent. Find a way to do it yourself, at home, where NO ONE ELSE will be harmed.

If you have complete quadriplegia then you are not going to be able to walk your wheelchair down the stairs. On the other hand, the surgery I seek is to convert my existing monoparesis into monoplegia (paralysis of the left leg only). I guarantee you that people with this condition ARE able to walk their wheelchair down the stairs. It is better to get your facts straight before commenting.

      I'm guessing that a lot of people who make fun of you secretly are attracted to you or envy you and making fun of you is a sort of twisted coping mechanism due to their inability to accept how they truly feel. My nephew is gay and got picked on a lot in middle school as a result. He confided in me when he was 10 and that he knew when he was 7. I knew before he told me but sometimes you gotta let a person work up to that point in their own time but I digress. When he was a sophomore in high school he discovered that the boy who was his chief antagonist in the 7th grade in fact had a secret crush on him and so to deflect suspicion that he was gay he picked on my nephew. But he also used it as an excuse to get close to my nephew without anyone suspecting he had the hots for my nephew. They have been dating since and this spring they will be going to the Senior prom together. Things are often more complicated then they appear on the outside.

      Barcroft cut out her explanation of everything. Basically, she was in a horirble skiing accident 6 years prior to this video. She has a spinal cord injury from it and is now partially paraluzed in her left leg. She wants to fully paralyze her left leg because it is extremely painful in the parts she still has feeling in. She's also in a wheelchair because she has fibromyalgia, not to fake being paralyzed. Don't let them fool you.

      Yes, that is correct. I have had a huge amount of psychotherapy. It has been extremely valuable for improving my self acceptance and self confidence in regard to BIID. I most certainly would not have been able to publicly make myself so vulnerable without it. Unfortunately it is known that psychotherapy can do nothing to help the BIID itself.

    As a disabled woman I am shocked by this a little because I wasn’t born disabled, believe it or not my problems started at school another child pulled a chair away from behind me accidentally because he wasn’t looking at what he was doing and chatting to another student, and I knew/thought the chair was there and went to sit down it was a solid concrete floor and I sat down with such a force that it jolted my spine, I think genetically I wasn’t right anyway because on my mum and dads side of the family there are a lot of different health problems anyway, for example my mum was born with slight scoliosis (curvature of the spine) and ended up with chronic heart disease and died of a heart attack in sept 2014 and my dad ended up with heart problems and he had chronic back problems when he was older and even had about 3 or 4 operations on his back over the years and he died in March 2014 of secondary bowel cancer, so at first I was shocked that a little accident like that caused so much pain and so many problems at the age of 15 yrs old because when we r young we think we will bounce back from anything, but I just didn’t, I was off school from the chair incident for about 2-3 months having to undergo lots of mri scans and lots of physio therapy too, then when I was 18 I was a passenger in a friends car and I didn’t put my seat belt on (totally my own fault) and she crashed into the back of the car in front so that further aggravated my back problems and I hurt my knee and hit my head in the windscreen I was very lucky that we wasn’t going fast at all, it was believe it or not the fault of the driver in front, she was actually behind us and she over took us dangerously and then once she got in front she slammed on her breaks and my mate couldn’t stop in time, my mates car was a wreck!, the woman got straight out the car moaning at me n my mate then ran across the road to a pay phone to call her husband me n my mate in agony slowly walked over to also use the phone and the woman had the audacity to ask if we had change for the phone and I know how soft my mate is and I said “sorry no we don’t, we got enough to make a phone call ourselves that’s it” she managed to make her call as she went into a shop we then made a call and slowly went back to the car,

      BIID is a neurological disorder that is present since birth. It effects how the brain maps itself out and how the brain perceives parts of the body. It has been scientifically proven the only treatment for BIID is to make the brain map align with itself. This can be done through amputation if one has persistent feelings of being an amputee. No amount of therapy can get rid of a neurological disorder. This is how the brain is wired and developed. It is not a mental disorder.

      Chloe Jennings-White Unfortunately, it's still not the same. It's like when you have say, brown eyes but you want blue eyes (lame example). You can get coloured contacts which still allows you to have blue eyes, but it still isn't the same. When you wake up in the morning yo won't all of a sudden have your blue contacts in.
      A really lame example, but there. I'm sure there are a lot of people who are genuinely disabled in this way and they would do anything to have the same opportunities as people who aren't disabled.
      Hope I didn't sound like an asshole.

      The surgery I seek is to convert the existing monoparesis (partial paralysis) in my left leg to monoplegia. This does not affect the right leg in any way. People with monoplegia are perfectly able to get around with a single leg brace, and they are perfectly able to get a wheelchair up and down steps. I have plenty of friends with disabilities who do exactly what I do. Your assertion is incorrect.

      Absolutely not the same, difference is, gender dysphoria is something people are born with, chemical wirings of the brain not aligning with the physical body, whereas this is not an innate mismatch or rejection and occurs as a result of mental illness.
      The innate neurochemical mismatch of trans people suggests it's not an environment issue

  • @FireflyFanatic3
    @FireflyFanatic3 11 ปีที่แล้ว +4

    Saying that she shouldn't wish to be paralysed because she'll have to suffer what many paralysed people go through is like saying that a transgender woman shouldn't wish to be a woman, because she will have to suffer the misoginy that "real" women face in real life.
    Also funny how most people seem to have a general grasp of depression and suicide, but completely fail to understand that this is also a psychiatric disorder. There are MULTIPLE psychological disorders that cause a person to wish to harm themself in some way, and it just so happens that hers is losing the use of her legs.
