- Bryan Hayes, Frank Corrado and Jonas Siegel discuss Maple Leafs prospect Easton Cowan’s future in the NHL next season and whether or not they move on from John Tavares as the team’s captain and give it to Auston Matthews.
The unfortunate thing is that all the armchair managers have no idea what Tavares does behind the scene to lead the team as captain. It’s on record that he’s had the whole team to his cottage. He’s had rookies live at his house until they were comfortable in the city and with the team. He gives a substantial amount of time and money to Toronto area charities.
None of us know what he says or does in the dressing room, but Johnny Toronto certainly acts like a captain off the ice. You don’t need to be the best player on the team to be the captain. You need to have the respect of the players, and I think he has that in spades.
Not to mention he is still an amazing player, too. I love Tavares. The haters will always hate.
How does this relate to winning?

Why does the team sit back and allow Tavares to take a beating without sticking up for him then? Both from players and from opposing fans (remember how bad he got booed against the Islanders?) Either the team has no respect for him or the team is heartless.
Nothing wrong with JT being the captan. If Matthews wants it. It should be him after next year but until then it’s JT
I think you wait until next year to do this when Tavares is either on a new team or re-signed to a much cheaper deal.

Doesn't matter. JT takes less money next year. Doesn't make him any less a captain. I think he's a better leader than Matthews would be.

I think the Leafs' new strategy is to piss off Tavares to the point he's willing to leave, and now you have the $ to sign Marner.

Saying Mathew’s got hurt is why he couldn’t do anything is kind of a cop out. The best players find a way to still produce McDavid put up 8 points in 2 games against Florida while dealing with an abdominal injury that requires surgery most likely. Drai single handedly destroyed Calgary a few years back with a brutal high ankle sprain he was basically on 1 leg.
Leave Tavares alone and win the Stanley Cup!!!!

i was one of the few fans that didn't want tavares. he was the biggest mistake of the matthews era. he wasn't what we needed at the time of his signing. and here we are...6 godamn years...we are still where we were when we first signed him. then we made him the captain over our drafted superstar. we even had a press conference, as if he led the islanders to a bunch of cup finals. his contract was also the reason why none of our drafted young stars took bridge deals. and no, nylander's contract wasn't a bridge deal either.
his robotic demeanor pisses me off so much! have you EVER seen him try to rally his teammates? get angry? scream? It's always the same fucking robotic expression. The same words are always uttered. his playoff resume as captain is a grand total of TWO fucking rounds won! what more proof do you need to make the change?!

Not even signing two older defensemen to long term deals (for their age) - Ekman Larsson and Tanev? As a Habs fan this is music to my ears - again a top heavy Leafs team that will fall off the playoff tree the way that leaves do.... :)
