    It is a mystery: why do I feel so happy when I see/hear Christa Ludwig? I smile even when she sings sad songs. Even though I never met or knew her in person. She is now gone forever. She'll never know how much I love(d) her.

    Christa is very firm in expectations and blunt with corrections but the hand holding is so encouraging

    I still can't understand why I enjoy watching Mrs. Ludwigs master classes this much as a violinist who can't sing the smallest bit but I just do.

    Ludwig is just brilliant. I just adore her forthrightness, she gets results. Yodzis has a stunning voice - a Sieglinde in the making. Yodzis would be wise to study some roles with Ludwig!

    Apart from bWEeing an outstanding mezzo I'm in awe of Frau Ludwig's command of English, a language she hardly ever sang. Great woman.

    Promising young singer with a great voice, but needs a LOT of expression and musicality from experience, as well as a really clear understanding of all the phrasing and German poetry. What a wonderful chance to have this class with the great Christa Ludwig!!

    This is one of the best master class segments I've ever seen, by one of the wisest Mahler performers in the world. A gorgeous, haunting song with almost everything left to be brought out of it yet -- and the girl's voice is really a wonderful instrument.

    I like the way Ludwig also pays close attention to the pianist.

    I've seen a couple of master classes in live performance. They must be the most intimidating thing in the world. Christa Ludwig, despite her grandmotherly mien, pulls no punches...and improves what was already an excellent performance. I had no idea her English was so good. I'm writing this in July 2018; the great lady turned 90 in March.

    So much is so marvelous about this and just as much has yet to be worked on. Christa Ludwig wisely tackles only certain issues here - however in the longrun the problem of real legato will have to be addressed. Elisabeth Schwarzkopf would have been very harsh on young Diana Yodzis for thoroughly breaking up every single legato with those tricky silent "h"s, creating steps and bumps in the musical phrase.

    She's "always breathing" because she doesn't know linguistically where to beak the phrasing. Her own teacher should either clue her in to how German works or get her a coach.

  • @paacer

    I cannot believe what I'm reading on here . Ludwig is an appalling teacher . Diana had the perfect tempo yet Ludwig ruined her interpretation with her constant insisting to sing it quicker . Just because she's a great singer doesn't make her a great teacher . Just listen to the tempo and wonderful interpretation of Lucia Popp with Bernstein conducting .

    • @davidsimmons654
      @davidsimmons654 ปีที่แล้ว

      Everyone has their opinions, unfortunately. I think her first tempo fit HER very well.

    • @beachfanatic2010

      Christa was an outstanding teacher. This student has a naturally gifted middle voice but she has no low notes and she needs to rush through those low parts cause there is no voice. Christa was in the right according to her development. Also, Christa was the last singer alive who sang together with Callas in the same stage and same recording. If you are on stage with Callas as a soloist you are a very special and gifted singer naturally but not every singer who sang with Callas was also a great technician yet Ludwig was not only a natural gifted BIG voice but also a great technician. Rare combination.

    • @christianstark2381
      @christianstark2381 ปีที่แล้ว

      But this is not Lucia Popp and the pianist is not Bernstein. Without proper technique and musicality slow tempo is just a sludgefest and has nothing to do with Mahler. It still has to flow and it doesn't. It also doesn't serve the voice. Thus Ludwig is absolutely right by demanding a more fluent reading of the song.
