Every time I watch your master classes, Joyce (you magnificent divine being and God's gift you :), I get goose bumps and want to get back to music being the core of my life ...as an American, you make me proud, as a woman, of course, and as a compassionate being with so much talent and ability to coach/teach and change people's lives (not just students but those of us other aficionados of opera and music of a higher level), I feel like I want to reincarnate as you in my next life...YES, that's right, I said it :) LOVE YOU FROM BOTTOM OF MY HEART and I am deeply humbled!! what a beautiful voice!
This woman has a bigger voice for Sesto than I’ve heard in a long time of people presenting this aria professionally. Ever since Bartoli, DiDonato, and Garanca, it seems many heavier mezzos are overlooked for this role or the singers don’t audition with it. This is very refreshing. I‘m a bit disappointed that Joyce is trying to make her sound like a light mezzo.
Well, it is a high aria and a high part, no? Not so easy for a heavier mezzo, arguably not even appropriate for a heavy mezzo or contralto-ish voice. In the original score, Sesto is designated as a soprano castrato...
I feel that this role can be sung by a variety of mezzo-soprano types! Just my two cents.
