Here's a hot take: I like that reptile prices are going up (within reason). Obviously I'm not talking like down payment on a house-level expensive. I just think that having to invest a couple hundred dollars usually means that people will be more invested in the animal and taking good care of it. @@aina3387 that's a very fair point. Hopefully, though, if people are learning about these animals through reptile youtubers, they're also picking up on the push to not get wild-caught
I honestly like that too that they have value and don't just become throw away pets because then if someone really, really wants one they will plan and do research and specially as many reptiles live longer than many small mammals as example. So people don't just see a snake and buy without knowing anything about them. Of course they should not cost like a house unless it's maybe some rare animals, though thinking about it actually I don't think people should be able to sell very rare animals (who risk extinction in the nature) because that risks leading to bad people stealing them from their natural habitats (further thriving the extinction) and selling to rich people who just want a cool pet to show off, I'm definitely not a fan of the exotic reptile trade.
@@aina3387 - some laws do the same thing. I live in VA and Spotted Turtles, for example are banned. I get it. But they also banned captive bred (that have a tangible paper trail). Hi Adam, generally when newly hatched or born offspring eat the faeces of their mother it is to enable them to acquire the gut flora they need to be able to digest the food that they eat. This is very prevalent in reptiles that are plant eaters. This is also the case with the Koala here in Australia. The first solid food a baby has when getting close to being weaned is some of the mothers faeces. This contains the bacteria that are needed for the baby to be able to digest gum(eucalyptus) leaves

@@WickensWickedReptiles it’s really easy to find at least base information too, I have a huge document compiling it from when I was wanting to get one.
I firmly agree with your ball Python assessment. TH-cam has made breeders take things to the next level by “creating” more dynamic morphs and pairings! The prices are all up and some of them on the higher end are justified!

Facts! An old-time breeder said he used to have a hard time moving a pair of dumerils boas for $80-100. I told him they're flying off MM now for $600-800 a pop, and he flipped his lid. lol.
I started off my reptile keeping journey last year... got a corn snake, so I am thankful for their relatively cheap cost haha! I got a beautiful female tessera for $90. I just put down a deposit on a pink tongue skink... that bad boy, unlike my corn, cost me $400. Clint got me hooked on that species. But I believe that's a pretty average cost. I will say though, I am always nervous about one of the reptiles on my list of what I want to own suddenly becoming too expensive for me because of youtubers talking about them! not that I blame youtubers of course, y'all gotta make content and I love seeing lesser known species in the spotlight.
I'm surprised that Emerald Tree skinks didn't make the list, considering the fact that they are Clint's _favorite_ lizard. I guess we just have to give him time to breed more of them.
I got my hognose snake because of a Snake Discovery video, completely guilty. I was a gecko keeper (hence the name) and I wasn't too fond of snakes at the time, but after seeing a baby hognose in one of Emily's videos I knew I had to have one. There is a lot of hype around them but it's well-deserved hype. Beautiful snakes with interesting personalities. Hard to get bored of them!
Dude! The hognose snake thing is so true. I looked last year and they were a decent price and this year they are either impossible to find or extremely expensive! I was just looking for a normal morph pet and couldn't find ANY.
I'm having this same issue - i legit just want a normal hog (i like their patterning and color the most) and they're non existent. Everything is het'ted out and crazy expensive
Where do the mormals dissapear? Do you mean that the breaders stop breading them because they only think about money? To me that feels unethical to not bread normals too (then some who want could get a cheaper snake too) as it's these snakes natural form and too because there is a bigger risk of genetic issues with morphs as most of them are not natural.
Though I think Emily who breads these snakes breads normals too., most others probably only think about which give most money, the normal is pretty too.
@@teijaflink2226 Yes, exactly. Breeders stop breeding normals because the profit is in fancy morphs. I completely agree that normals are a great choice, cheap, healthy and showing the natural beauty of the species.
I feel like as care for regius gets more advanced we're gonna see a spike in price as well since people are going to start being more selective with the breeders they go to.
I just had a baby Albino Western Hognose snake surrendered to my reptile rescue in Virginia. He was abandoned in an apartment complex hallway along with several other reptiles and inverts. Owner got evicted, left everything behind. We found him a good home, after several applications came in, but we have a set adoption fee no matter what the animal is. He was perfectly healthy. This happens quite a bit too. Animals are just left behind in apartments. We have 2 iguanas that a cleaning lady found, they were left behind and were in the empty apartment for 2 weeks before she found them.
The reptile that TH-cam has gotten me most interested in is the blue tongue skink, didn’t know they existed and always thought I’d get a ball Python or a beardie. But now it’s on my list to research and have myself a blue tongue.
I bought my first hognose in 2016 after being friends with Emily and meeting hers, he cost me $70 and I love him to pieces 🤣 looking at prices now make me so grateful I got him when I did! And shocked that they've jumped so fast in cost. thanks Emily lmfao
Great video as always. But i just wanted to congratulate you at achieving 235k. I remember watching your vids 2 years ago in the summer when you had 32 k. Back at the old house.
Thanks for all you do Adam. Speaking of Anataresia, you are the reason I went with a spotted python for my pet snake. She is amazing and I couldn’t be more happy about her. Keep up the amazing content.
Back in 2004 we paid $125 for our Dumerils - a pretty typical price. Even with somewhat expensive animals the life cycle costs - exclosure, feeding, heating/lights, vet bills - exceed the purchase price.
Man I’m glad I invested in a group of hogs for breeding a few years ago. Didn’t ever expect them to gain popularity so so quick lol I just got them as pets for the most part as I love just keeping them probably my favorite snake species. Such a unique species but not a colubrid for everyone though much more to them than their cute faces!
Just want to say after watching the intro and scrolling through the comments and not seeing anyone talking about how epic the intro was I have too. If you have had that on a previous video I have missed it but dang that was badass!
I have the same problem with Hognose here in Georgia. There will be guys walking to every single table asking if they have any hognose, and they always leave empty handed
Who are buying all of these super expensive ball python morphs? It sure as heck isn't the every day keeper. It's other breeders, or wannabe breeders. So they're basically selling amongst themselves, jacking up the prices amongst themselves.
Exactly. I literally traded 20$ worth of self propagated plants/cuttings for a "500$" ball python. I said yeah, I'll give ya some plants for it; poor guy was a failing breeder and needed to get rid of them so badly he offered me two for one! 😅 I personally don't care too much for them so I took one and called it good 😊
Region might also have something to do with it, at least in part. I went to a reptile expo earlier this year and I think I only saw one or two booths selling hognoses for example...and even then there weren't a lot. But watching youtubers doing videos on other expo visits, there always seem to be tons.
Not sure if I am happy or sad that carpet pythons have never exploded in popularity like other species has, in two decades of keeping them the various morphs have held their value fairly consistently.
@@Spicycow94 While I admit I am happy that most of my carpets are inquisitive and easy to handle, I also really enjoy the defensive ones just as much. You learn a lot about handling and behavior working with an animal that has a bit of spunk to them 😁

I might have to agree with you on some of these ideas. I was never a big fan of reptiles , I didn’t dislike them, just never thought about them & would not ever think 💭 of them as a pet. Then I came across Emily and Ed Snake 🐍 Discovery. After watching them for over a year, I have to be in Iowa for a wedding & the next day I am going to take a drive to Snake Discovery Zoo. It is a 4+hr drive each way. I have seriously been looking at cages and supplies to see if I can afford to possibly own a reptile , I would never considered a reptile if I had not watched hours of you and Emily and Ed. I can’t wait to go to the zoo next Sunday and look at adoption island.
Have fun!! Snake Discovery is also what got me into reptiles, and now I have a ball python. Couldn’t recommend a pet snake more honestly. Fairly low maintenance and just a chill pet all-around.
So this post is 3 weeks old now, I'm curious to know how your trip was and if you decided on a reptile? I live in Iowa myself and I have yet to make it to Snake Discovery. I'm glad the gas prices are going down.
@@JupiterJamie My vacation was fantastic, thank you for asking. I was able to make it to Snake Discovery and meet Emily. It was a great day, the zoo was fantastic. I plan on returning next year for labor Day weekend, they most likely will be having a anniversary celebration and big raffle again. If you have the time, I would recommend the drive to go. Just check on the schedule to make sure Emily and Ed will be there. I am leaning towards a gecko, either a crested Gecko or a fat tailed Gecko. I have to move in a few months so I decided to wait to see what we find for a rental and what the space looks like, I know the Crested Gecko is semi arboreal so the cage would need be taller and the fat tailed gecko is not and the cage would need more floor space. In the meantime I am happily watching the egg hatching video's.
Also I think youtube has popularized the reptile hobby overall. You mentioned in the ball python section of the video you didn’t know about the morphs etc, which is the exact same for me. I think TH-cam showed a lot of people reptiles are not what they originally thought keeping reptiles would be like and how many beautiful options there are. I’m a perfect example haha I’m planning on getting my first reptile within the next few months.
Adam, you mentioned Antaresia. I recently got my first Spotted Python here in the UK. They really are wonderful little pythons. And there does appear to be more ads from breeders/shops etc selling them now. Prices aren't too bad. My local rep store has a young granite spotted in for £200 UK. Not sure what that equates to in US$ or C$.
You forget that crocodile skinks have huge eyes (or look like they have huge eyes) and relatively-large heads. That triggers all kinds of deep-seated mammalian nurturing instincts. When I first saw one I nearly flipped my lid over it, and I have no intention of owning any reptile, ever.
Reptile hobby lore is my favorite thing you cover.

DUDE! I love your channel! A year ago I got into your channel. I couldn't even touch a skink without freaking out. Now I have a blue tongue skink, bearded dragon a new addition is my stimsons python. Just wanted to say you've encouraged me to get into this amazing reptile life and your videos are amazing. Have a good one champ \m/
OMG I feel this about Cave geckos because they are blowing up but no one is doing their research and calling different localities all under the same umbrella and possibly inter-breeding them because they don't understand that Cave Geckos cover alot. Hunan, Bawangling, Zhou, Vietnamese, Taiwanese, etc all gets lumped and labeled as simply Chinese Cave Gecko.
they fit too!
@@WickensWickedReptiles it’s really easy to find at least base information too, I have a huge document compiling it from when I was wanting to get one.
Hi adam! I have a ball python, a tiger salamander, a bearded dragon, and a leopard gecko! You videos have helped me so much!
thanks so much for watching!!
I firmly agree with your ball Python assessment. TH-cam has made breeders take things to the next level by “creating” more dynamic morphs and pairings! The prices are all up and some of them on the higher end are justified!
your videos haven't been coming up in my sub box recently so i thought you'd vanished from youtube until i saw emily post the enclosure build off 😅 anyways i just wanna say your videos have gotten even better since I last watched and i've been a long time fan so great job! i'm glad to see you gain success
I paid about $700 for my pink tongue.
I'm surprised that Emerald Tree skinks didn't make the list, considering the fact that they are Clint's _favorite_ lizard.
I guess we just have to give him time to breed more of them.
they fit here for sure
That opening piece was really cool ! Great job Adam and Big D !
Adam: if i'm cleaning enclosures i've got headphones in
Also Adam: inserts clip misting enclosure not wearing headphones LMAO
Great video, can I ask what font you use in the thumbnail??? :D:D
honestly I have no idea haha
@@WickensWickedReptiles Haha yeh so many out there
One hell of an intro, well done
I got my hognose snake because of a Snake Discovery video, completely guilty. I was a gecko keeper (hence the name) and I wasn't too fond of snakes at the time, but after seeing a baby hognose in one of Emily's videos I knew I had to have one. There is a lot of hype around them but it's well-deserved hype. Beautiful snakes with interesting personalities. Hard to get bored of them!
Your intro is so sick I love it!! I love watching the evolution of your channel!
I remember getting a hognose when I was like 13 for like 50 bucks. I'm 30 now and bought a normal for my daughter, 450 bucks later
Wow
Dude! The hognose snake thing is so true. I looked last year and they were a decent price and this year they are either impossible to find or extremely expensive! I was just looking for a normal morph pet and couldn't find ANY.
A side effect Adam didn't mention is that once a species gets popular and more morphs are made, normals just...disappear
Love your view and Angle on things. Good Orator.
Love this! Great idea and nailed it with your choices. Cannot wait to see a video on conspiracy morphs ha ha!
I feel like as care for regius gets more advanced we're gonna see a spike in price as well since people are going to start being more selective with the breeders they go to.
maybe!
More lore yes please also finally someone talks about this I only see you talk about these things keep it up
I just had a baby Albino Western Hognose snake surrendered to my reptile rescue in Virginia.
I wanna know how the Leucistic hognose came to be 👀
it's a wild story
Either way. Your amazing keep it up.
Saw the Tricolor Hognose and clicked right away 😅
But great video man. Totally agree. Also love the intro
Heck yeah Adam! Love the new intro!! 🔥🔥
Love the new intro! It’s really cool lol
I LOVE the new intro!
I like your new intro and outro!!! Very cool!!!
I am loving the new intro!! X
Diamond is throwing some side eye!
Are you going to breed? It's probably a good time to money wise if you are able too!
Just want to say after watching the intro and scrolling through the comments and not seeing anyone talking about how epic the intro was I have too. If you have had that on a previous video I have missed it but dang that was badass!
THAT INTRO THOUGH. GOOD JOB 👏
I have the same problem with Hognose here in Georgia. There will be guys walking to every single table asking if they have any hognose, and they always leave empty handed
You’re new into is epic!
I just can't get over how cool the new intro is
true
Your cutaways cracked me up! Lol
Love the edits on the newer vids!
I’m digging the new intro and graphics!
Dude, this is like a PHD thesis. Amazing topics
I would definitely watch that! Pls do that video! Also can you do a video on reviewing TH-camrs again? Great video!
sure can!
@@WickensWickedReptiles thx so much Adam
Who are buying all of these super expensive ball python morphs? It sure as heck isn't the every day keeper. It's other breeders, or wannabe breeders. So they're basically selling amongst themselves, jacking up the prices amongst themselves.
Exactly. I literally traded 20$ worth of self propagated plants/cuttings for a "500$" ball python. I said yeah, I'll give ya some plants for it; poor guy was a failing breeder and needed to get rid of them so badly he offered me two for one! 😅 I personally don't care too much for them so I took one and called it good 😊
I love this video, thanks for the great content :D
the new intro is so fucking extra i love it
Great video, so true!
The new intro is SICK!!
You can still get a het pied ball Python for $20 at a show.
This sure was one interesting topic but I'm just glad I was just able to watch this video to get the rightful and helpful information
Like bloods they have a bad rep temperament wise :/
@@Spicycow94 While I admit I am happy that most of my carpets are inquisitive and easy to handle, I also really enjoy the defensive ones just as much. You learn a lot about handling and behavior working with an animal that has a bit of spunk to them 😁
I wanted a dumerils boa when I saw your original video, the very next show I went to, they were started at $1200.
The intro is amazing 🤘
“my name’s Diamond, this is Adam, and you’re watching wicked wickens channel”
I would love a video about leucistic hognose snakes! I didn’t even know those existed. Any videos about hognose snakes would be awesome, I love them so much and only Snake Discovery ever really produces content about them.
Bummed that dumerils boas got so much more expensive recently 😭 fell in love with them after watching your vids.
A video that NEEDS to be done: obesity in reptile keeping.
There's A LOT of it out there😳
🗣🗣
I think he already did one
wow the new intro is bad ass!
thank you
definitely interested in hearing about that leucistic hognose story
Love the new intro.
Can you do some videos on gray banded kingsnakes? Need that price drove up lol
Your channel is awesome. I watch others and they are also cool as well. I got a lot of information from you about my Reptiles and reptiles that I do not have lol.
That Emily "Ahh" of denial choked me laughing 🤣🤣🤣
Fairly low maintenance and just a chill pet all-around.
a bearded dragon is a good starter too just do your research on what you want 💙💜💙
I love my little leopard gecko 💕 wouldn't trade him for the world! So adorable for them to lay on your hand with their little chilly bellies lol
Great video as always:)
Glad you enjoyed!
I’m a perfect example haha I’m planning on getting my first reptile within the next few months.
would love to hear about the leucistic hoggie!
That intro is AMAZING 👀
can you pls do a video on illnesses and how to cure and prevent them. like mbd and others. thaks so much i love your videos and your channel!
