I am sorry to say, I'd not heard of David Kernan till a couple of hours ago when I heard him singing this song on the BBC Radio 2 Elaine Paige on Sunday show. The lyrics are so witty and the way he was singing the song, really drew me in. Elaine then shared the sad news that David Kernan had died recently. I then looked this song up and ended up here. Seeing him singing it makes the song even more powerful. I must admit that it moved me to tears as the lyrics really touched a nerve within me. He sings it so beautifully and it feels so heartfelt. Which is why it connected with me so strongly. Rest in peace, David Kernan. You were clearly a wonderful human being and you will be very much missed by those who knew you and people like me, who have only just discovered you.

Discovered him on "Upstairs, Downstairs" - the scene in which he sings to Lady Marjorie was my favorite!

As a young actor I paid my way through stage school by working as a dresser to David Kernan and Glyn Worsnip in one of David's first principal roles in Our Man Crichton. Both delightful men, and huge fun to work for.

Just seen him in an episode of Upstairs and Downstairs in which he plays Lady Bellamy's lover. He sings such a beautiful love song to her. His voice is wonderful.

Such sweet memories of Side by Side by Sondheim at Wyndham's Theatre December 1976 after a fondue at the Swiss Centre with the extra special girl I was to marry.Thank you Millie,Julia and David for giving us a lifelong love of Sondheim.

There was always something slightly remote or reserved about David ...which perhaps explains how he made this song his own. I remember him stopping the show in galas during the 1980s with this song.
