    • @SadistModeOn
      @SadistModeOn ปีที่แล้ว +754

@L Mars Teruhashi has that constant sparkle effect 😂 which is the main thing setting her apart character design-wise. She does also have bigger eyes with eyelashes and a more "conventionally attractive" hairstyle too compared to the girls she's usually around, so they did put in at least some effort. (As opposed to Yumehara with the short hair and Mera with the ponytail.)

Exactly! I hate when a show has to tell you that a character is pretty instead of showing you. It’s like “This character is drop dead gorgeous as an important plot point! But since we’re afraid of drawing the other characters as anything less than just as beautiful, it doesn’t really make an impact on you.”

The big problem with the second trope (I'm gonna call it Beauty and the Beast Trope) is that it's not a good guideline for relationships in real life. "Oh, but I can change him-" do not marry a project! You don't marry somebody just because you think you can "fix them", you marry them for WHO they are and because you love them for that. If you think you have to "fix" a person in order for them to be something you want them to be, then that's a pretty good reason not to marry them. I know a person who has had this mindset for their marriage, and they've had to divorce three times with three different people.

You know a manga trend I can’t stand? In a lot of manga I’ve read it has this (usually) brother and sister who act like brothers and sisters, but then they find out they aren’t related by blood so the sister tries to go out with her brother but he’s not interested due to living 18 years with her as his sister. I’m okay with this, *But then a few years later the guy realises he loves the girl and they get married and I’m always like: Do you like her or not, WHAT ARE YOUR STANDARDS!? WHERE ARE YOUR PARENTS DURING THIS!?*

Or worse: When a guy adopts/becomes the guardian of a little girl, acts like a proper father towards her, but inexplicably they develop feelings for one another once she's an adult (or even an elder teen). 🤢 Usagi Drop and Hanyou no Yashahime come to mind here, and unfortunately, this, along with that "Onii-chan" trope, have made me leery whenever I see an older guy looking after a little girl in anime + manga...

I feel that the second trope is so frustrating to me because it's always the girl who's expected to be patient and deal with a guy's flaws, and the fact I haven't seen a version where a guy has to do the same for a girl makes it feel like the girl is expected to compromise everything for her relationship with a guy to work in these types of dynamics and I despise this mindset a lot.
Both partners should be ready to make compromises, making one person do all the hard work to deal with you while you sit there with the same attitude and not bothering to change is so unhealthy both for you and your partner!
I'd prefer to see a version where either it's the opposite for once, or that the girl gives up on the guy and he's explicitly aware it's due to his own actions so that he has to be the one to earn her trust back rather than the girl desperately trying to fix him even though the love interest is a total brat.
Honestly this is one of the examples of why I can't enjoy romance in general and stopped seeking out much content related to it.

And I ended up in a very toxic relationship with a guy who would make me feel awful about myself under the guise of some alt instagram accounts, then swoop in as himself and defend me. All for his own entertainment and to lock me emotionally into that relationship. The only reason I agreed to be his girlfriend, despite knowing he wasn’t the best person and not actually “liking” him (at least not like that) was because I thought maybe I would develop feelings or that I could help him be better. I’m okay now. I cut it off years ago, but it was a very toxic and harmful situation and I kind of hate that it’s a trope in anime/manga. Worst trope on the planet: Not like other girls. It’s the stupidest trope and as someone who actually wasn’t like other people, you’re only ostracized by others for that. It’s the stupidest thing ever conceived because by design the main character is almost always exactly like every girl reading the book. On the bright side, I did know one girl in high school who wasn’t like the others in a good way. She had down syndrome but never let that stop her. In fact, she not only was one of the sweetest girls in the school, she was also one of the most popular girls too. Not sure if you ever read all of Fruits Basket, or only watched the 2001 anime adaptation, but trope #2 doesn't really apply to the relationship of Tohru and Kyo. Tohru doesn't love Kyo because she thinks she can "fix him". In fact, she's kind of intimidated by him at first. Because he's so loud and full of rage. Over time, she begins to see his softer side, and his other good qualities. She comes to see who he really is, and that's what causes her to eventually fall for him. She falls in love with all the good and all the bad. She loves him for who he is, not who he could be, or who she wants him to be. I would really recommend giving Fruits Basket another read if you never actually finished it before. Or watch the 2019 reboot which adapts the full manga story.

@@sffrsk they weren't saying their opinion was wrong, just that the trope doesn't really apply to Kyo and Tohru because he drastically changes over the course of the story, he is mean and harsh in the beginning but that's not excused, he softens greatly over the course of the story and by the end he never raises his voice at Tohru or any of the cast unless they're like fucking Akito. The problem with that trope is definitely the toxicity and I think the only time it works is when that toxicity is addressed and the person grows and changes and STOPS the toxic behavior-which Kyo does. But as Lavender pointed out, they're just sensitive to the trope and that's why they don't like even Kyo and Tohru and that's valid lmao everyone's valid for their opinion, op was just explaining Kyo and Tohru are not true criminals of the trope like Hana Yori Dango or Maid Sama or that one Wolf girl anime

On the issue of artist overwork, specifically manga magazines publishing on time: I don't know anything about the industry, but let's say an artist is working back-breaking hours to provide a chapter a week so the magazine can publish weekly (like I said, I know nothing about the hours or publishing schedule. This is just as an example). Say the magazine needs to publish chapters from 5 different artists every week to fill enough pages. Instead of having one artist publish every week, they could hire another artist and have both of them publish every other week. So, this week's imaginary Shounen Jump has the newest Naruto and the next week has the newest One Piece to allow for a better work-life balance for the Naruto artists. No, they don't get as frequent updates from their big hitters and that could hurt reader retention. But it drastically expands the life of the manga because the people working on it are no longer literally dying. This also provides an opportunity to feature more new and undiscovered artists to fill in those slots.
Now, I can see them arguing, "If we have to hire another artist, that costs money we could spend on artists we already have!" My answer is: You will not go bankrupt, become homeless, and die if you take your profits and reallocate just a little bit of those profits to ensuring your artists aren't literally dying because you're a greedy bastard.

Manga is "What Do You Call This Trash," or Kono Gomi o Nanto Yobu

The 2nd trope has fostered a lot of younger readers to look for relationships that aren't healthy for them, it's so painful to realise that a genre made for young girls is often filled with stereotypical abusive relationships. I wonder past all these years, did the Shoujo genre as a whole move towards healthier views or is it still the same?

My current biggest pet peeve seems to be specific to MHA, which is how the clothing of a lot of the girls either gets destroyed when they use more of their power, or they have to remove their clothes to fully utilize their quirk. As a result, my fan OC for the series specifically goes against this. It's 3 people who are registered as, and pretending to be, just 1 hero named Ninja, and each have a different quirk. The first one needs her clothes in order to fully utilize her quirk, because part of it specifically affects her hair and her clothes; she calls it Chameleon, and it lets her climb walls and blend into environments, the latter of which is done by changing the colors and patterns on her hair and clothes. The second one's quirk, Ghostly, lets her levitate and phase through solid inanimate matter, but she can bring solid inanimate matter with her at no extra cost, like her clothes. The third one is technically already not wearing any clothes, but you wouldn't know it just by looking, because their quirk, Shapeshifting, can copy the looks of anything they've seen and any voice they've heard, which includes the target's clothes; despite all 3 ending up looking identical most of the time, the third one's original form isn't a girl.

Tip for hand proportions (this is probably really obvious but it took me a while to catch on to):
    1. The fingers should not be noticeably longer than the palm ( I've been told I have long fingers and they're almost the same length so unless it's intentional don't push it)
    2. The length from finger to wrist is a little longer than the distance from chin to eyebrows ( you can check for yourself)

About your second pet peeve... I completely understand, and it's up to personal preference of course! I do think that in Fruits Basket Kyou's anger is mostly due to how he was treated as a child and is presented as something he needs to learn to let go of. And that's the case for a lot of characters from Sohma family, they all have something that they need to overcome (due to their curse). Kyou is much more chill in later chapters, as he meets more people from "real world" and learns how to behave properly.

The biggest pet peeve I have with a manga trope is the "tsundere" character and their love interest that they don't like, where the tsundere character is mean and nasty, and just an overall bully to their "love interest" and the love interest just takes it because they "love them" and they're too nice to leave them. And it's not until a third person comes in and starts showing a genuine interest that the tsundere character even cares about them and then gets mad because they feel a sort of entitlement to them.

I do a sorta modified version of the 'I can take the demon out of him' type trope. For example, the stereotypical bully'd be tall, he'd have darker type hair color and eyes, black/gray or bland clothing unless there's a uniform going against that, etc. I accidentally made my bully the opposite of that while aiming to keep some features on him.
Another thing is that the bullied schoolgirl is a tall guy who quite literally forces (bully guy) to bond. That biatch ain't gonna get away from his affection any time soon lmao

Ok but what really disturbs me about the whole overworked manga artist trend has been passing onto novel writers as well, where they're essentially put into a room and put into crunch time in order to get a story done, which results in a lot of tropes being followed because the author/creator has absolutely no time for themselves and essentially have no inspiration. It's not just happening in Japan either, it's happening in the west, especially with younger writers who are coming from Wattpad and other social media sites where previously just involving a trope was praised.

I think Kyo and Tohru is more of a deconstruction of the "haughty boy, nice girl" trope. The reason why I came to like them both as characters and a couple is because they have legit reasons for acting the way they do, and they became better people through each other. Tohru's super niceness applies to everyone she meets and it's due to her upbringing and unhealthy behavior of mimicking her late father. Same thing goes for Kyo. Kyo has been the black sheep all his life, he's been ridiculed, shunned and even blamed for his mother's death. He was even told that he would be locked up after he graduated high school. I honestly don't blame Kyo for being angry at everyone. It wasn't until Tohru came into his life that he started to ease up and think positively about life in general. Kyo also taught Tohru that it's okay to be selfish, that she doesn't need to act in a way that puts her feelings aside. This in turn motivated Tohru in breaking the curse because she mostly wanted to save Kyo from his eventual imprisonment. She started to fall in love with him gradually and so did Kyo with her although he initially denied it.
Honestly, give Fruits Basket a second read, or watch the latest anime adaptation because there's so much character depth that is great.
