That was incredible. The fact he can visualize within a second of his race time is just one of those classic snippets of Sam Hill information that slips out every few years and just adds to his legend and mystique. He may not have the most WC wins, World Championships, or overall titles, but there was something about the way that he did what he did -- his reserved character, the mystery that it created, being on lines no one else even considered, riding flat pedals -- that makes Sam the GOAT in my eyes.

Why do u care? Why does he have to conform to what u think he should do? If memory serves me correctly Sam rides a little moot from time to time as do a lot other mtb riders and a lot of moto guys train on bikes so this interview certainly fits his wheelhouse.

Too many races where what he did was mesmerising, even in races he didn’t win. Champery in 07, Vale d’ Sole in 08… in my opinion, the greatest Extreme MTB rider ever. Injuries curtailed seasons where he would of won more races and Championships and could of easily been top of the list of WC Downhill race wins.
Modern DH tracks don’t suit his size and style… they are fast and resemble bike parks, designed for better tv viewing. They’re not as technical and gnarly where skills and bike control give you the advantage.
Just to emphasise how good he was - when he won the Junior World Championship at Lugano, Switzerland in 2003, his winning time would of placed him third in the Elite men’s class where Greg Minnaar won. Even with a crash in his race run… He was 18 years old.

07 Champery best DH run ever! (3rd place) Still felt like he won that day, no one remembers first place! What a race, what a track!
Give him the crown! “Steve Peat”

I remember seeing him at the norba national in snowshow wv in 2002.
I was following a fellow semi pro down the course, and he blew past us like we were standing still.

Such a legend. I got to ride with him at Keystone bike park testing suspension (video on my channel). He was dialed on lines in 2 runs on a 13 minute track. He was pissed about denting his rim as he didn't know when/what rock it happened on. His memory is on another level.
