      This tradition comes from a maritime tradition during slavery. Slaves were not considered people and so rescuers would ask for souls onboard because the captain often would not count the slaves as passengers.

      @@raybankes7668 it's crucial info for fire/rescue and other emergency services responding to the aircraft. They don't want to make any unnecessary trips inside that burning tin can. Once all SOB's are accouted for it allows them to employ tactics they wouldn't use while performing SAR. There are other important things they need to know about like any hazardous cargo on board but soul count is priority. Getting that count out alive is the only thing those emergency crews care about.

    When I worked at the Sioux Falls airport ( Joe Foss Field), there was a plane that was arriving but no body told the snow plow operator this. The plane landed and promptly spun around in circles. It was very lucky that there were no fatalities on the plane. Unfortunately the same couldn’t be said for the poor driver of snow plow. This took place in the ‘80s. I think.

    What is significance of saying ‘Heavy’.

    • @vonnikon
      @vonnikon 2 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Large aircraft which causes lots of turbulence.
      That turbulence can be dangerous for small aircraft behind.
      The world's largest aircraft (Airbus A380 and the Antonov 225) cause even more turbulence, so they say "Super" instead.

      Not if you are a 2 engine aircraft and need priority landing. Two functioning engines are required for redundancy.
      But four engine aircraft can have an engine out and not declare an emergency.

      Maximum permissible takeoff weight over 136 tons (300 thousand pounds). The term "super" also exists, but only in the United States, used for oversized (Airbus A-380, Antonov An-225, basically anything which is heavier than a 747) aircraft.
