The big mystery. Is this bike original and what year is it?!
I really got a bargain here after finding some nice surprises under all the dirt. It’s going to take some careful scrubbing to get it how I want it but I think it will be worth it. What do you think? Leave your comments down below.

Another lovely machine, and very interesting too! During the early sixties and possibly later, it was quite common for people to convert to hub gears on purchasing a new bike. If not the manufacturer, a shop would most likely carry this out. Many more mature cyclists had been used to, and favoured hub gears or single speeds (fixed and free). Some remained suspicious of derailleur gears and were never converted.
The original owner of your Dawes, might have tried the derailleur transmission for a while, or possibly wore out the block, and then reverted back to the four speed Sturmey. They might have changed the bars at this point too. Perhaps, they used the bike for commuting and light touring.
Due to the period components, it looks to have spent most of it's existence as you found it, so you could call it fairly original.
When derailleur gearing became available, many cyclists did embrace the possibilities presented and used various combinations. One very popular set up, and one that I use on on my vintage Raleigh, is to run two sprockets on a Sturmey hub in conjunction with a derailleur. A very neat way to achieve another gear range. I use two dished 3/32 sturmey sprocktets back to back to give correct spacing. Cyclo did produce a sprocket carrier to achieve the same using flat sprockets and spacers.
    All the best to you

Awesome info. Thanks. I have actually seen those SA adapter before... I almost got my grubby little mitts on a set that came up on eBay once upon a time. I'm definitely tempted to do it to this bike.

One of your favourite ebay dealers auctioned off a whole bunch of those lovely yellow mudguards this week. I came very close to actually going after the lot until i figured i had no use for all of them ;D

I picked up an old B15 champion brooks saddle from eBay that had similar issues as yours. I reshaped it by releasing all tension then soaking in warm water. Then once soft and wet, reshaped it by hand and used a couple of cable ties to hold the shape. Massaged out a massive crease in the top. Left it to dry throughly for a week, then gave it a good soaking with proof hide. Ridden it one and it seems OK.

First of all, I love your content. Would you consider making a video about your restoration techniques? Bike mechanics are cool too, but I am particularly interested what methods you use to restore old frames, saddles etc. Everytime I am very impressed with what you can make out of an old rusty frame. I have to restore an old eastern germany IFA tandem bike, and I could really use some tips regarding the paint/rust treatment.

Well RJ The Bike Guy made a good comparison, between the different methodes you could use. th-cam.com/video/fE2fau_gXRw/w-d-xo.html

@@dietbountyicecream1444 Thanks, I have already seen that one before. I know how to remove rust from loose parts. But with painted frames its a little bit more than that. Polishing, and restoring the original paint is what interests me.

RJ's video is pretty much spot on there. I've used Oxalic Acid before to clean a frame but I built a huge bath to dunk it in. I then just cleaned the frame and lacquered it. I've tried Evaporust in a similar fashion but with it being so much more expensive than Oxalic Acid I tried soaking paper towels and laying them over the frame (and covering in cling film). It didn't really work as well. I'm going to try some different techniques on this one so I'll make sure to include that in the video.

@@ziemowit5362 I assume you are a fellow german, therefore I recommend the Videos from Edelweiss Customs, where they describe how they handle patina. Eventhough they show the techniques on motorcycles the principals should remain the same.

1:03 It was originally 5 speed. Probably Cyclo Benelux Super 60 or thereabouts.

This Concorde is possible the amalgamation of two bicycles, The witness mark on the down tube shows it once had a gear lever clamped there for a rear derailleur. A previous owner either due to the Concorde components becoming damage or just fancying a hub gear, dynamo and flat bars used the parts from another 'old bicycle' they acquired ( with those Sturmy dates stamps it was one from the same era ), this maybe explains the apparently mismatched headset components, perhaps the center pull brakes are not original ( though from the same era ) and the headset was 'bodged' to fit the center pull cable stop.
If those rims have not pitted deeply they could be re-chromed, it depends how valuable they are, it might be possible to get a batch of components together for re-chroming to reduced the individual price, But then of course the frame could do with repainting to match the standard of the newly re-chromed components, it could quickly escalate into an expensive full blown restoration !
The saddle could be saved, if it was treated to leather feed for some time it could be 'wrenched' back into shape without tearing the leather, incidentally the holes along the lower edge of this type of Brooks saddle where for lacing, many cyclist pierced and laced the lower edge of a leather saddle to stop it spreading and rubbing their inner leg, so Brooks made saddles for enthusiasts with lace holes ready pierced should they wish to lace the lower edges of their saddles towards each other.
One interesting thing you could do with this Concorde that a few cyclist did back in the day was make a six speed, or in this case, eight speed bicycle. Sprockets for Sturmy hub gears have a dished offset and spacers, without the spacer two sprockets of different size can be be put back to back ( may need some slight thinning of the sprockets to get them on the hub far enough to engaged to clip ring ) this gave enough space for the chain to run on either sprocket moved across by a derailleur, because the deflection was minimal a quarter inch chain could cope, This Concorde has the brazed on fitments for a derailleur so it would make an interesting period correct conversion.
The name Campagnolo is pronounced Cam-pan-yolo according to a cycling club friend who had an Italian mother, here is a link to a TH-cam video pronouncing it the same way -

@@MonkeyShred I have been considering changing my chain ring on my Hercules to make it a six spd. I would be very interested in that conversion. Looking forward to the restoration of the Dawes. Beautiful head badge.

I think it was modified when it was new. 1961? That rear hub was leading edge stuff in 1955. I believe this bike certainly had a drop handlebar/downtube shifter and two front sprockets/derailleur in the showroom. I don't think the buyer wanted any of that. I believe they wanted the ratchet shifter they were familiar with and a more comfortable handlebar. Even the brake levers are like ones off my old ten-speed. They are not proper for that handlebar, but are likely original. I think an 8 speed road bicycle from 1961 is the way to go.

    • @MonkeyShred

I wonder if it was built by a Dawes dealer with a new frame for a traditional cyclist who likes hub gears as oppressed to deraileur gears.

MonkeyShred ...The Dawes is most intriguing . I’m inclined to believe you’re correct that it was a 5 or 10 speed
in it’s inception . The outline you highlighted on the down tube , sure looks like a Campagnolo shifter was once mounted there . Too bad the original drop bars were discarded !
