I once made a similar cell and embedded it in beeswax, but the bromine still found it's way out unfortunately. Tried a sequestrating agent which improved things, but the voltage dropped quite a lot as I remember.

bromide complexing agent is a big difference, using it increases battery cycle longevity to 10,000 cycles and dendrites do not form, also the battery doesn't self-discharge

Dendrites form also with Bromide complexing agent,... it was proved. But the cells self discharge was better.

@@cayrex this paper says they don't have dendrites, but we have to test if obviously:
_In this work, we demonstrate a zinc bromine static (non-flow) battery without the auxiliary moving parts and utilizing a glass fiber separator, which overcomes the high self-discharge rate and low energy efficiency while the advantages of the zinc-bromine redox couple are well maintained. This is achieved by an effective complexing agent, tetrapropylammonium bromide (TPABr), reversibly converting the Br2/Br3 species to solid phase in aqueous media. The solid complexation is stored in porous carbons with good interfacial contact, further providing physical confinements to prevent the cross-diffusion and sel discharge. We also witness the zinc electrodeposition is altered from dendritic to non-dendritic growth by the polar TPA+ ions, which prefer to be adsorbed on zinc nucleus, blocking the strong electric field and regulating the ion distribution on the interface (Ding et al., 2013). In such a simplified design, the Zn-Br2 static battery has a similar configuration to the Li-ion batteries. The proposed zinc-bromine static battery demonstrates a high specific energy density of 142 Wh kg-1 at 500 mA g-1 (equivalent to 150 W kg-1) with a high energy efficiency of 94%_

@@absolute___zero Oh yes that paper. Beacuse of TPABr in electrolyte.
"The Zn plated in the blank electrolyte shows a typical needle-shaped
morphology with large porosity. The high-surface-area dendrites exacerbate reaction with the
electrolyte, leading Zn pulverization after 100 h (125 cycles) of repeated plating/stripping.

@@cayrex " oh that paper" I am becoming a fan of your work and put you on my list of Accomplished chemists .. I wondered what you would think of a battery using Americium which is very low Gama emitter also I have a lot of Berilium, also very easy to handle and a low emitter as well I have a collection of various crystals . Also I have been working with some resonant circuits and I think there are some very good posibilites for some new types of batteries in the not too distant future that will be not so out of reach for us in the least amount of complexity . Also I am looking forward to your next video as you a very nice job of producing these accounts of your work ....

Brilliant work Cayrex2. That small motor is nearly flying away lol I really like your Videos and your manner of presenting. Very friendly, interesting and helpful. Keep up the good work. So now I must ask you something because I want to make zinc bromide battery. I have Sodium Bromide powder and Zinc Sulphate Powder. 1 Kg each chemicals. Please can tell or make a video on " How to mix 2 Mole as you have there" I have to make two solutions of each with de-ionised water and boil them together? Then concentrate by boiling off a lot of water? But what concentration do I need? How much water needed initially and does it matter, ...... is it critical? Please tell if possible Thank you Edward

Robert Murray Smith did a video on making zinc bromide. There is also another good video on TH-cam if you do a search.

Thank you! To make 100ml of 2M ZnBr2,....you add 41g of NaBr2 and 57,4g of ZnSO4 into 100ml of de-ionised water. In the end you will get ZnBr2 and Na2SO4. So for Na2SO4 is no need to remove because Na2SO4 can be your supporting electrolyte in that system.

@@rogerwilson6367 Hi Roger. Thanks for answering. I have seen two videos on youtube describing how to mix for ZnBr2 but they say different things. So that confused me. That's why I had to ask Cayrex2. I had seen his demo of this battery which shows a strong charge level and obviously low internal resistance in this cell he has just shown. By the way Roger. I have seen a video with someone who made ZnBr2 flow battery and the Bromine destroyed the plastic casing by making it breakdown by becoming brittle, cracking and useless. It maybe how it got through your beeswax which is way softer than hard plastics !!!

@@eeezygoing Yes, I got confused as there seemed to be differing ways of making it. I wish Cayrex luck with this battery, but I couldn't keep the bromine contained and had massive self discharge. I think they always store bromine in glass ampules for a reason.😩😩

I am having difficulty finding this in Australia strangely enough even with Redflow being here. Looking on ebay I can get Zinc Bromide 1kg powder for $580. Seems a bit expensive for a by product from desalination.

Really? You was able to find zinc bromide on ebay. On alibaba is the price arount $5 to $10, but you need to buy min 100kg. So your last option will be sodium bromide and zinc sulfate

What is the purpose of using activated carbon felt or powder to this cell?
Can we skip this or use another good thing for this.

    • @cayrex

The activated carbon is like storage cupboard for bromine. Any carbon material will work. The problem with using other materials is that the bromine will damage it over the time.
