  • Cub Cadet Zforce SX 54 Review. In this video we demonstrate the use of the controls and the operation of the Cub Cadet steering wheel zero turn mower. Steering around poles and mowing hills is easy on the Cub Cadet mower. The Kawasaki engine is plenty of power for high speed mowing.

TractorTread, I have a question. When making a turn, do the wheels turn in opposite directions, so as not to make a divot in the grass? I didn't notice it happening from the view you shot. But I swear I've seen it happen on one steering wheel mower, just can't find that model now.

    • @TractorTread
      @TractorTread  7 ปีที่แล้ว +2

the rear wheels will not go in the opposite direction unless you step on the reverse pedal. When turning the steering wheel it will speed up speed up one side and slow the other side down to make a smooth turn. One of the benefits of this machine is it will not turf the grass near as bad as the lever machine. Go to a dealer and test drive this machine and also test a lever machine. Do zig zags on a stone driveway and you can see what i mean. The lever machine will drag the tires when turning. The steering wheel machine will be smoother with less tire drag.

TractorThread, thanks for the reply. Darn, I was hoping for technology that eliminates my inability to make turn that doesn't create a divot. I try to focus, but when I don't, which is often, I rip the grass up. My next option might be the Deere with the Tweels.

TractorTread You are wrong about the steering. The steering wheel is not connected to the transmission. The steering wheel turns the front wheels like any other tractor, but it is able to turn the friend wheels 90degrees to the frame, to turn like a ZTR. The rear axle has a differential like a normal tractor,. The rear wheels turn a corner like any other tractor.
So a true ZTR steers using the rear wheels, while a ZTR with a steering wheel uses the front wheels to turn.

I have one and I love it. Better than any lawn tractor I have had- I have never bogged it despite being in super wet conditions- it goes up some extreme slopes and it can handle serious grass. I'd recommend this unit in a heartbeat. Mine has the Kohler 23 hp engine.

Renny1953 mine is stiff and terrible to try to turn. I can't turn with one hand. it's a 60 inch with no electric steering wheel assist.

Have this model for 3+ years. Only problem I have had was the tension spring for the drive belt broke. $15.00 part.
Kaw engine is a workhorse, uses no oil, always easy start.
Mow around the pond with steep banks, you can't beat it!
    Love the steering wheel control.
    Best bang for the buck!
Have a Toro Tmecutter & it has a lonely life, rarely used.

Thank you for the video. After seeing this I scheduled a demo of the smaller one & 48” version with the Kawasaki engine. After testing them and testing several other top of the line mowers NONE handled my steel hills like this one. Plenty of power. Only complaint is the reverse, if you don’t ease off the reverse throttle when you want to stop it JUMPS to a holt. I purchased the stripe kit as well as the mulch kit. Leaves a really professional cut and is very fast. My terrain has steep hills. Hills are a complete joke for this thing. I paid $6k for everything out the door. Best investment ever.

I am releasing a video soon with the Zforce SX54. I did some testing on the hills and the results were great. All the Steering wheel zero turn units work awesome on the hills. I will agree the reverse pedal is terrible it's not ergonomic at all but that's the only downside to that machine.

I'm the proud owner of the early model Z Force S with the 48" deck, heavier duty spindle covers, two gas tanks and the same 24 hp Kawasaki.
The only problem I've had was Cub put the blades on at the factory with more force than my old air compressor could tackle. But, that worked out great because I could explain to my wife why I needed to buy a better compressor! LOL
The only mods I've made are an aftermarket headlight at the base of the steering column, a gel cell battery and soft office chair armrest covers.
The only thing I need now is a loud horn to tell my wife to bring me some sweet tea because it gets hot here in Florida. 😊

  • @rondittmer5802

The steering on my generic lawn tractor has always had a lot of slop in it and has gotten worse with age....and yes I have it adjusted as best as it is capable. I was in a Cub Cadet showroom last week June 30, 2022 where they had a residential $4900 Ultima ZTS1 series and a commercial $8900 Pro series. There was noticeably more slop in the residential version just turning the steering wheel a tiny bit as compared to the Pro Series. I wonder how "TIGHT" the steering is on the Cub Cadet Z-Force Series. Which is it more like? The Ultima ZTS1, the Pro Series, or somewhere in between? It does not make sense to have slop in the steering wheel when some of the benefit is to have straight line cutting. I wonder if the conventional levered-steering design is not much worse than the steering wheel with inherent slop in it.
    BTW: Very Nice Review!!!

Sweet! I wanted to buy one of these for my hilly 3 acres. Unfortunately, no dealers in Louisiana would stock these for me to test run. I bought an Exmark Pioneer S series instead and it does not do well on slopes.

this was very informative. I am trying to decide between a steering wheel 0-turn and an Ultima and I had read a comment about the steering being tight but this video, driver operating one-handed eliminates that problem. thank you

The steering wheel zero turn Zforce S and SX models are much better quality than the Ultima's. We are hearing good reports in the field about the Ultima's. They are a good machine for the price but the s and sx models are built a little stronger. One of my favorite mowers is the Zforce SX48 ..

thank you for your reply and I a going shopping tomorrow for a Z-force. I have not decided on the cutting inches. I have a 50 in on a standard mower now. I was thinking of going to a 60 in. thanks again for your expert help.

after your wonderful video, I purchased the Zforce SX 60 and it is awesome and I love it. It has a very stable and comfortable ride. I have at least three acres to mow and it has reduced my mowing time from 5 to a little over 2 hours but I am sure that will come down as I get better with it. I did have trouble getting the blades to stay in the number I wanted but I see how to lock it in lace now. the lawn looks like a professional job.

The rear tires are crap, matter of fact, those type are crap on any lawnmower. I have three mowers and have four wheeler aggressive tread and never have the slip and slide problems, not for over 12 years. But a great video and thanks for sharing. Types- Ocelot, Wanda Atv, deestone D929, ITP holeshot. No they aren’t harmful to the lawn, unless diggin and racing moves are attempted. Just my 2 cents, til next time.

I think its a great idea As someone who uses a zero turn they are great for level ground but i am always worried about getting stuck in a sloped corner with itthis steering front end takes that problem out of the equation for me

Not a bad review I have the 42 in version of this mower and I love it I'm thinking about upgrading it but the price is not right 4 traditional zero-turn you can get this size for a lot cheaper and I've seen cheaper mowers mower a lot better than this one even though the deck is a lot stiffer I think Cub Cadet needs to upgrade something to make their mowers better but good review man
