But Poythress definitely made a difference on defense. You could see it the game after he went down(which i think was UNC). But that defense just wasn’t quite the same after that. He was a better matchup for Dekker than Cauley Stein.
This team reminded me so much of one of pitino's teams. They were physical, they were dominant on both ends of the floor, they just had it all. I remember when we lost that final four game, and just how heart broken I was, but at the same time, so proud of those young men, and what they were able to accomplish that year. I think this is the year where calipari's fire at kentucky had gone out. After this team, we didn't do much after that, especially these last 5 years.
This team seemed to get less and less dominant all season long (you see Kansas and UCLA) and then WVU in the sweet 16 it spiked again, all the way until the final four loss to Wisconsin- the games are very close late season.
A Duke fan here but this Kentucky get so much respect from me they absolutely dominated on the defensive end I was pissed I couldn't get the Duke Kentucky Championship game in 2015

Booker was awful on defense. When he was in the game against Wisconsin he got abused. Same with Ulis. Winky just ball screened and forced mismatches and took advantage of Ulis. Towns need to play more I agree but I think he did play more in the tournament. Statistically though we were quite a bit better per 100 possession with the twins out there than we were with Booker Ulis. I think our best lineup once Poythress went out however was Ulis, the twins, willie and towns. Willie just had an off game against Wisconsin and Booker, Ulis and Lyles were all in over there heads. I think the pressure of an undefeated season just got to Andrew finally in those last minutes. As a basketball fan I loved the twins though and if I had it to do all over I’d ride with them again. They were winners even if they didn’t quite finish the job. They still led us to back to back final fours and are one of the only starting back court tandems to do so in our history and came closer than anyone in 40 years to pulling off a perfect season. Losing Poythress really hurt. He was the guy we needed to put on Decker. He was a problem for Decker the year before and when he got hurt advanced statistics had him as one the of top 3 defenders in the country. I think guys were only shooting 12% when defended by Poythress.
With a team this absurdly talented it's easy to ask what went wrong. The reliance on inexperienced nba prospects, shortcomings of a coach that depends heavily on the talent of his players to succeed, lack of in-game adjustments, and overconfidence, it was just enough for wisconsin to shut them down and stop what would have certainly and rightfully been considered the greatest team in college basketball history of which the likes would never be seen again. And they really won't. You'll never see another team that is on paper even remotely comparable to this one. There never has been and never will again.

Why we only took 5 3’s the whole game when Wisconsin was daring us to shoot it I’ll never understand. Cal just likes to pound the ball inside at all costs. That works if you can physically overwhelm the other team but Wisconsin could match our size.

The only one, and he would have made a massive difference the next season, was Dakari. He would have dominated on that 2016 team with Ulis and Murray on the perimeter. Once he left Kentucky he just never approached basketball with the same effort. That said it actually looked like he was about to break out in his 3rd year in the league. There was a month where he was averaging like 20/12/3 or something preposterous and then Sacramento started cutting back his minutes in favor of Marvin Bagley. NBA insiders that talked to people high up in the Kings organization said it was because Bagley was a more natural offensive player(they weren’t wrong but they neglected to pay attention to the fact Bagley was also a classic 5/4 tweener and those guys never work out as stars) After that Cauley-Stein was never the same. I just don’t think he had it in him to live for basketball.
