    The "Poem" read out by the teacher is actually the lyrics from the track "Money" from Dark Side of the Moon.

    "He's scolding the kid for being creative" - Congratulations, you basically got the whole song right there. :) It's about the writer's time in school back in the 60s when the British school system was pretty much horrible and where you, when you didn't fit into the scheme, they would beat the nonsense out of you (literally). The teacher, back at home, is a weakling who jumps whenever his wife tells him to and in school lives out his frustrations by beating the kids.

    • @paulmckearney4945
      @paulmckearney4945 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      The target is not the whole school system it's the "certain teachers" Roger Waters (of Pink Floyd) encountered at school in Cambridge in the 1950's.

    • @paulmckearney4945
      @paulmckearney4945 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    • @commanderkruge
      @commanderkruge 3 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      @@paulmckearney4945 Thanks. But I admit I didn't come up with that on my own, but got it from the documentary about the movie. ;)
      And yes, it's not all teachers who were that horrible, of course, but the system allowed for them to exist. Kids getting beaten by teachers was normal back then in the UK.

    Schools teach you to be the person THEY want you to be and if you reject them, they’ll get rid of you. That’s the point of it and it’s horrifically true.

      Back in the 90's my buddies and I would watch it all the time when we were stoned. I saw Pink Floyd in concert in July 1994. the concert sold out 50,000 seats in 7 minutes. I went to the bathroom and I couldn't find my seat. I wandered onto the the main floor and found an empty seat in the 10th row. The guys next to me had a cigarette pack full of joints. Me and my new found friends had fun. I was so high when they pyrotechnics went off I could taste the colors.

    "We don't need no thought control"
    I always feel that line. They're geniuses when it comes to the lyrical and musical world. Also there are so many "easter eggs" in this song alone. This whole album/film will have you in serious thought afterwards.

  • @farrken
    @farrken 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    The Wall album by pink floyd is a story about the life of "Pink," a rock star who builds an emotional wall between himself and the world as a defense mechanism as he slowly goes crazy. Each song on the album is like a chapter in the story. The only way to get the whole story is to listen to the whole album. This video comes from a full length movie they made after the album. It stars Bob Geldof from The Boomtown Rats as pink.

    It's not that the kids are bricks in the systems wall. It's that the constraining education system (think George Orwell's 1984) contributes bricks to Pink's wall. It's part of the metaphorical wall the antagonist Pink builds around himself to disconnect from reality.

    The best thing school, this especially applies to college, should teach you is how to think for yourself. Critical thinking skills are crucial, and unfortunately, its not usually what's taught. That said, the line we quote the most from this "if you don't eat your meat, you can't have any pudding. How can you have any pudding if you don't eat your meat?" but we're geeks and we have a toddler who makes meal times interesting, lol

    You should watch the movie and listen to all the Pink Floyd's albums... Pure music... I'm french and also a teacher, of course, the basics are very important to me, french language is hard, even for french peolple, but every day, they were listening or seeing arts, that was very important to me, all kind of music, of course Pink Floyd and many English groups or singers, because I find them so creative, rich and with awesome musicians... I've always wanted them to open their mind and have their own opinions ... But, unfortunately, a mother hated me and I've been accused of horrible faulse things... Today, teachers have no rights... I can't teach to children anymore, France is a is the country giving lessons to other countries, but we actually have no rights... Now, I want to be specialized to teach in prisons because I wanna give a second chance to people, with my way to teach... And I'm very cool... Sure, I've always been open minded, fan of British groups and music... A french woman who doesn't like France anymore... Thanks for your reactions, I always watch you... Lov

    So The Wall of the establishment - yes you got it. It's a metaphor of his creativity being stifled as a kid and being forced to grow up in a faceless mindless world, told he would amount to nothing if he didn't assimilate.
    This song was banned in some countries as their government thought it was a call to revolt. The music video is actually a clip from the movie "The Wall" which all follows that same theme throughout. Yes the phone ringing was just an intro into the next part. Most of their albums all have continuous bleeding over from one song to the next - not the typical fade to back and start a new one after 3 seconds of silence.
    Eric Clapton was told about his guitar aspirations by his teacher "you'll never amount to anything". Hmmm, I think he did alright!
    Members of Lynard Skynard told the same thing by their gym teacher - so they formed a band and named it after the gym teacher that ridiculted them.
    The Wall is just a great symbolism of assimilation and crying for kids to be allowed to be free to become who they are and can.
    for other great songs to listen to by Pink Floyd:
    Young Lust
    Run Like Hell

    School - when I was there taught you *how to think* , question, challenge, investigate, source and learn. Now school teaches you *what to think* and prevents independent thought, questioning or challenging. It is also very heavily biased in politics and sociology. Something again you are not permitted to question or challenge, in my day that would just not be allowed.
    If you can't question, investigate, doubt and debate your own ideology you can't question anyone elses. If your philosophy doesn't stand scrutiny especially by you, why do you refuse to see other viewpoints?

    The most daunting thing to tell a 5 year old starting school is : you’ll go for TWELVE YEARS ( a life time ) THEN you’ll go to college for 4-6 MORE years so you can get a JOB to EAT for the rest of your life !🧐”
    ARGHGGG!
    I chose to tell my kids and grand kids “ your education is a KEY to the world . It’s for YOU ! It will open the world and your life will fall into place “.
    I remember how I felt at 5. I felt like my life was over .😰
    Naw. I encouraged my kids to live and look all over the world and education was for them to play in it -not a job and not for MY dreams .
    My kids were great . They thrived in school bc we didn’t micro manage them . They can all write , play instruments ( multiple), sing and two of the 3 were bi lingual bc they were interested . ( faired better than I did !)
    My grand kids now hear Hua Chenyu, Dimash , Native American music ( my husband was indigenous) , im the grand daughter of Irish immigrants so they hear that and their world is diverse .
    Don’t tell your kids anything about jobs at 5 . That’s essentially mental slavery.

    This is the way the schools work now - for real. They don't even teach "real" topics/classes anymore. When I went to school, I started my school day at 8AM and I didn't leave the school till 3:15PM. I had 7 classes and a 30 minute lunch. ALL YEAR LONG. There was none of this semester crap. I had classes like Social Studies (history). Health Science/Biology/Earth Science, Math, English, Home Economics (some had wood or metal shop), and Gym. There were also some that had Study Hall or Drama Club, art, Music (if you were in the band). Nowadays, some of these classes have been twisted out of control or they have been removed all altogether. Anything more than what I listed is not necessary for graduation and can be learned in college.

    I graduated high school in 1994. We were never thought in history class of the Tulsa Greenwood Massacre. The system does want you to learn what it wants you to learn.

    The 2 + 2 = 5 metaphor is more complex than most realise. The obvious reference is 1984 from Orwell, but dig deeper and you’ll find even more from Dostoevsky’s Notes from the Underground.

    Education is important, but... as adults we must be vigilant in shaping the curriculum to instill a joy of seeking answers, not just trying to pour in the answers... 'The Wall'!!! :| BTW, I'd recommend buying, owning and listening to (in song track order!) the entire double album of Pink Floyd 'The Wal'! I won't steer you wrong now, would I? :)

    Get back, I’m alright jack keep your hands off of my stack , new car, caviar, four star daydream, I think I’ll buy my me a football team... lyrics from the next song by Pink Floyd you need to react to- it’s from the Dark Side of the Moon album- and do the studio album version- no videos or mashups because it cuts out parts of the songs or it interrupts the solos from David Gilmour- this “video is actually from the movie , Th Wall which was made after the studio album was released- you won’t understand any of it until you hear the entire album which is about an hour and a half long so sit back and get ready for a great listen

    As someone who just got their bachelors later in life, education is thee most important thing there is but remember everyone has biases and understanding them will help to see past the nonsense.

    Now you know where come from the sound of "Eye of the tiger" soundtrack ;)
    Hello @$HollaAtKrazy, (New French subscriber here) ...All the references of the clip and the song concern the fascism which reigned in the 40s in Europe with a reference to the deportation trains, but also to the "shouted" tone of Hitler in these speeches and that used in general by the Nazi propaganda and indoctrination until in education of children. In fact, this clip must be taken in the context of the accompanying film (The Wall - 1982) which deals with the after-effects left by the war on a soldier who returned from the front to civilian life and which, little by little, confuses reality with his war memories.
    Of course it makes a parallel with today's education and it can makes sens with events that we live now. But never forget this is a movie-album project at the base, and so it must be taken in its wholeness...
    Friendly

    'Critical thinking'... The one thing most Atheists strive to achieve in life, because they know it to be best for throwing off the shackles of dogmatic thought control. Said best as "Teach our children how to think, not what to think. Arm them with the tools of critical thought , boundless curiosity, to be able to comfortably say 'I don't know, but will strive to find answers, and gain the ability to afford careful thought in the face of authority that demands unquestioning obedience."... That... and it's a really cool song with an awesome message! :)

    The only problem I ever had with this video is that it pretty much obscures one of the all-time great guitar solos.
    I think you'd like Wish You Were Here too.

    The little trick Roger Waters played here that a lot of people miss is that "We don't need no education" is a double negative. What that phrase says we don't need 'no education'. In other words, we need education. The system kind of gets you in the end, even though it shouldn't. He's a clever bugger that Roger.
