    True story, over 30 years back (mid-80s). We were students from India in a small University town in US, really missing classical music. We found out that Ustad Sultan Khan, Ustad Zakir Hussain and Ustad Alla Rakha were touring US. We were a lot younger and had the audacity to politely request if they can perform in a small town, but would not be really afford their usual fees - whatever an audience of about 200 can afford. To our absolute surprise and delight, they graciously accepted. We personally drove them from the airport to our town (about an hour's drive) - I drove Ustad Sultan Khan. We could not afford a good hotel for them, so we thoroughly cleaned one of the grad student really modest apartment . All three stayed there for a day (two nights, I think), ate lunch/dinner what we students cooked, had tea made by us and performed in a small auditorium in our University. All I remember is their humility, simplicity and absolute genius when performing. We don't have any photographs (none of us could afford a camera with our assistantships back then), but that whole visit is imprinted in our minds forever.

    These people doesn't play for fame or for some materialistic things.
    They put their soul, heart into it and practice for years and years together and still they are the most humble beings on earth knowing that, there is still infinity to learn in MUSIC.
    I came across a statement made by one of the Ustads "I am practicing one note in one raga from past 30 years, damn it I am unable to master it"
    That was the dedication.
    Cant get these people again.

    I am Dutch and discovered Indian music while living in South Africa some 25 years ago (huge Indian communities all over SA).
    Listening to this clip I thought of how my friends (if they were here) would have asked me to switch this off after five minutes. :)
    But for me, it is soul food.
    Thank you, it's very moving.

    Having heard hundreds, if not thousands, of performances of Yaman, this performance by Sultan Khan immediately became one of my favourites after just hearing the first few minutes of the alap.
    His ability to capture the vocal style is remarkable. If somehow it were possible to represent this performance visually without hearing the instrument and then to ask someone what instrument is being used, the answer would invariably be that only the human voice could possibly produce such music as this. Perhaps this comes from his experiences as a sarangi player accompanying vocal performance in which his main role would be to follow the vocal line.

Felt lonely, but a part of the nature. Opened I think important closed chakra's. This is healing. Thanks Sultan Khan and Zakir Hussain.

      very awesome... peace and blessings to you. I know the feeling of being impressed by Sangeet; most Indian people I've known are not really very enthusiastic about this music (except Sikhs, because of Guru Granth Sahib; much respect from me to that living book)... I think maybe for you, you might enjoy to hear to "Raag Todi" now... other end of the spectrum :-) ... (we are in "Kali Yuga", no? "Todi" raga are very delightfully "un-western"... Yaman is very "vanilla", don't you think? :-)

    • @edmartick
      @edmartick 8 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I have just listened to some Raag Todi music and it's also nice. I have no knowledge of your culture, but I have got lot of respect that in your culture people are seeking for that deeper understanding of the soul and subconscious mind.People in the west and in US try to understand this, but they only understand a very little part of it, because they are more interested in materials and robotic thinking. I have got west-Asian roots and I feel it more. Todi raga is un-western, is true. In my situation, Sultan Khan opened a door maybe 25 years ago to my heart and to your culture.Peace and blessing to you.

    • @giuseppelogiurato5718
      @giuseppelogiurato5718 8 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      :-) I'm so glad you enjoyed Todi! It is indeed a very unique and "different sounding" system.
      I am from the USA, but my family/ancestors came from Italy and Scotland... please don't believe everything you see about Americans in the media; we are not all sick money-worshippers like Donald Trump or the Kardashians... (I thought at first that the TV show called "keeping up with the Kardashians" was about Armenian people... boy was I wrong! Lol)... I am going to look up Sultan Khan now... thank you so much for your kind reply... peace!

    My journey of music started from Bollywood hindi songs,western pop, to Gazhal, to thumri or bhajans, finally to hindustani classical ( Aalap and Dhrupad.)
    For me hindustani classical is of the highest order and so captivating, that going back is unthinkable .
    I am grateful for being enabled to listen, feel and absorb hindustani classical music and have joined this club.

    What a soulful instrument! There is absolutely no match to Indian classical instrumental music with its plethora of raagas portraying myriad feelings and emotions. Each instrument is a class apart and pretty much unmatched globally, sarangi being a case in point. Raag Yaman, though being a simple raag, remains my favourite till date.

      yes of course... it's beautiful and restful... Raag Yaman is of course very easy for Western ears... there was an old European instrument called "viol d'amour" ("love-fiddle") that sounded similar to Sarangi (it even had sympathetic strings!) but unfortunately that has now gone out of style... only "college students" and "music nerds" know about it nowadays... thank God that some of the people in "South Asia" have preserved this truly unique sound! (it's NOT a "Violin", nor is it a "Rebab" like they have in Indonesia...)
      I am led to understand that Sarangi is very special and unique in a certain way... I've heard that a Sarangi player must grow his fingernail in a special painful way in order to manipulate the string correctly; is this true?

    I did not mean to criticize my friends, it's just that I'm the only Westerner I've ever met :) that loves this music like I do.
    No, I left SA 11 years ago. I've been safe but quite uprooted. Only now, back in Holland, the country of my birth, am I settling again.
    Do you visit India, and if so, what part? That's a country on TOP of my list of ones to visit!

      @@ankurgupta4495 somewhere along the way it was associated with nartakis. Took a whole to disassociate it from that -ve.
      IIRC for that reason it was not allowed on AIR for a decade or two.
      It was a couple of gharanas that kept it going.

    Its true that imagination is infinite. Amazing line of thought covered with beautiful emotions. while listening to this the condition of the heart becomes like the peacock who at the first drop of the rain, dances to it. The happiness, the sadness and everything in between. This composition covers all the beautiful emotions.
