A great collection of Shield backs there SS. I keep hoping that a stray one might appear in the '4 Coin Best Value' lots I buy from time to time but still waiting!!!
Hello Saurus - many thanks for making this interesting - and hugely important shield back video. Your weighing results of your 1871's will go down as a reference piece proving useful if selling shield backs (well, any sovereigns) to a dodgy or ignorant coin dealer who complains that the weight is a bit off. I am solely into shield backs myself since they are more difficult to forge than are St. Georges. Some will say that there are forgeries of any kind of sovereign including the shield back variation. However, if so, why is it that homepages presenting forgeries have yet to present photos of a counterfeit shield back? 🙂 P.S.: The thick, fake sovereign you own for teaching purposes is in a category of its own. These are for sale at Alibaba and labelled (as not to be prosecuted) "tokens", "copy", "medal" etc. So my point again: I don't believe there are any age old counterfeits of shield backs due to the detailed design - but, of course, when buying new ones I still check them with the Fisch instrument 🙂
Thanks for dropping by. I've not seen any counterfeit shields and when I pass by coin shops or gold shops I often call in and sometimes ask if they see many fakes, none have whipped out counterfeit shields to show me come to think of it but it wouldn't surprise me if they're out there
I've considered it yes. I did do it with a couple of them but I prefer mine out of the plastic to be honest. It might be a good exit strategy for some of the nicer coins and a way to preserve them
My last two George V came this week both very good, BUT a 1843 Shield back was really disappointing, it was graded as fine, although Victoria's hair has very little definition. In fact, of the 27 shields, this 1843 is the worst AND also the most expensive. Im still waiting for a response from my supplier.
Fantastic news on the Georges! I've picked up some more this week too. Shame about the shield , they don't come up that often from the 40s but would be nice to have a better example
Dumb question but… my OCD wants to know how everyone else organizes their sovs… by monarch or “type”? I’ve got mine currently separated by monarch and I hate that my shields are spread across 3… great problem to have don’t judge me
The best resource is probably the Marsh book titled The Gold Sovereign I've a few links to some useful books in the video description. Bullion By Post has a mintages page which is good for just that but doesn't show varieties or mint marks etc.
It varies. I've not seen many cheap ones this year. My cheapest shields were just shy of £350 but more recently it's rare to see them in the low £400s and obviously well upwards from there for higher graded examples
Always goes up in price 😊😊.
Let's see 🤞🏽😁
A screen full of shields, doesn’t get much better than that!! Thanks for sharing, Jamie.
Now there's a man who knows what's good 😁
Excellent informative vlog thank you
A change from the horse coins, kind of....
MY FAVORITE!!! Shield Backs.❤ Cheers🥃
🍻🍿
@7:35 Maybe an uninformed seller included a Piedfort sovereign (I should be so lucky)
Haha that would be a nice surprise

I've had one come in best value... I'll cross my fingers for you
Hi, I love your videos, keep up the great work.
Glad you like them! I've a few interesting ideas I'm researching at the moment
There's only two people in the world that's ever collected all die numbers 1to 100
Have you seen an article or video anywhere?
Still enjoying this video after watching for the third time👌. J. Btw, that thicker coin could be genuine and all the rest, fakes!!!! Lol.
Haha I'd be pretty confident to say it contains no gold 🤣
Great video. I'm new to Gold Sovereigns. Howe should I go about stacking/collecting all of them?

Have you ever thought about getting some your Sovereigns graded?

What is the purpose of the die number?
I think it was a form of tracking the maker of the coin so a form of quality control. Perhaps a number was assigned to a particular shift or employee?

I’ve got mine currently separated by monarch and I hate that my shields are spread across 3… great problem to have don’t judge me
I tend to fill tubes based on monarch though the Victoria shields have their own tubes too
Are there any good sites for finding out more about all the mints marks and die numbers?

How much did you pay for the shield sovereign. Dealers are always demanding a premium for shield sovereign.
It varies. I've not seen many cheap ones this year. My cheapest shields were just shy of £350 but more recently it's rare to see them in the low £400s and obviously well upwards from there for higher graded examples
Not a fan of the Shields, but you have an awesome channel so I had to watch! Thank you Sovereign Saurus, have a great weekend.
Thanks for the visit 🍻 Enjoy the weekend
