      I completely agree; I am 60 years old, recently retired, and have approximately $1,150,000 in external retirement funds. I am debt free and have very little money in retirement funds compared to the total value of my portfolio over the past three years. To be honest, having a portfolio-advisor for investing is genius!

    Expect condescending, snotty interviews. Expect job descriptions that are nowhere near what the real job is. Expect salaries and contractor rates rolled back to 2008 . Expect free work demanded on the 5-8 interviews before you realize you won't be hired. Expect ghosting as the NORM, from the interview invitation that's never set up after you've responded promptly, to the non-appearance on the call or meeting, to non response to emails and calls, never hearing whether you're proceeding or getting an offer. Oh, and expect getting an offer, getting onboarded, and then let go because the quarterlies stank.

      I'm going through this right now. It's an internal transfer at my company. Hiring manager has been telling me to apply when it opens, for the past 8 months. I applied December 1. I interviewed December 14. So far they have just told me they are still interviewing people. I think they are an EO employer so they have to interview everyone that applied. Now hiring manager told me that it could be a few more months because the upper management is not sure if they want to retain the position. Hiring manager said he wanted the position filled in November, and can't have less than six people down there. So position is in limbo. I have no other offers. I feel trapped tbh. These companies don't care.

      I just had an interview that the job description was nowhere near the job expectations they want you to travel plus do your job no remote in office only. The salary was low wanted a masters job only requires an associate degree.

    I was laid off and I hadn’t expected it due backing from director. I am at the point of applying for applying for jobs I don’t want making less than I need. My layoff started sept first and I can live ok for 4 more months but I don’t want to wait until I am desperate. Good luck everyone!!! We can do this❤

      Same here Was laid off Sep 2023. Still hanging. Savings depleting. 51 now. Not expecting to make it back on my own accord. Just upskilling most of the time nowadays.

      @@kathygaber3801 I am so sorry!! Luckily my company gave us packages and also let us draw unemployment plus I am only paying $55/month for cobra. I was going to move because I knew my apt was going to go up and was already too high but I got the renewal that went up $200 the day after I found out my director couldn’t save me. Kind of hard to get an apt with no employer 🤦🏻‍♀️. I would be on the streets if it wasn’t for the co help. I wish there were better news out here. I am down to looking at customer service jobs that I hate doing. I loved my job 🥺. I also only have to support myself and 2 very spoiled cats. Do you have any kids? I hope that you job comes around the corner very soon!!!! If you need to talk to someone who is on the titanic with you, I will be here. I think we all need to help each other through this!!     Have a healthy dose of stoicism. Do everything you can. Don’t stress too hard on what you can’t control. Just because the trends are negative doesn’t mean you won’t get a job. But it will likely take more effort and take longer than expected.

      I route out people like you on job interviews. I don’t want people working for me who have this “that’s above my job description” mentality. It’s the reason why I’ve gotten promoted year after year consistently for 5 years, because I’m the guy they send to clean house and solve problems
      Is loyalty dead from companies? Perhaps. But is hard work recognized and reward, you bet your bottom dollar… especially when the competition is sub-par people who have the above mentioned poor mindset

    It seems pretty clear that the shareholders want to run their organizations as minimally staffed as possible, and only after making people jump through 500 hoops, because the next quarterly earnings call is always in sight, and those EPS have to keep going up, at all costs.
    Eventually there will probably be another pendulum swing back, but it's going to take a lot of pain, and a lot more jobseekers refusing to play ball with the most egregious offenders.

      My company lays off the worker bees and hires directors and SVPs. I think the CEO is priming the co to sell, there have been rumors. We went into bankruptcy a few years ago, got a new ceo that was the hired gun to trim the fat. Then we got the current ceo that gave us rainbows and unicorns then cut the cord without a thought. I agree that the tides will eventually turn. The will realize offshoring and AI will not sustain a company!

    Another thing I'm seeing with salaries are job postings that are offering salaries that I got in 2016, but requiring much more in the role. Talk about "shrinkflation"...I'm close to retirement age, but can't. And that's also hurting my chances.

    Ive been applying since March 2023.. its ridiculous. Plus im trying to switch careers, and these "entry level" jobs want people with all the experience already

      Brian has a video why we have entry level jobs requiring 10 years experience. There are several reasons but for me the most plausible is that many automated job posting systems do not have a protocol to set experience level at job boards, and the default experience level for new jobs (at Linkedin anyway) seems to be entry level unless the job posting comes through otherwise.

      Have you tried applying for unpaid internships? I know it sounds unappealing, but that’s how I got my foot in the door in 2010. I did 4 months of unpaid internship, then the same company hired me at the end of it. So while I hated working for free at that time, it was totally worth it in the end.

      @@Borninit384 well you laugh, but keep in mind that in 2008 there was a financial crash. It was much, much bigger than the current recession. On top of that, I’m from Finland. Around that time the largest tech employer in the country - Nokia started failing and laying off people in spectacular fashion. Unemployment was high. It was really hard to find a job. People look at the past through rose tinted glasses, but there were plenty of periods where the job market was really tough.

    Personally, I think we are heading towards depression 2.0 based on the culmination of events. While I am employed at the moment, that can be subject to change very suddenly and Unemployment will only hold you over for a brief time. It worries me to know that my future could be me as a homeless man in my 50's.

      Honestly if you think you're gonna be homeless, do what you can to invest in a van. You can be homeless and thrive if you plan properly.
      And if you do experience that life one day, you might find that the freedom that comes with it liberates you in a way.

      Ageism is real. Being 60 and in the job market has been the most eye opening experience! I finally got an interview and hired but not as a Director but as an Assistant manager. Obviously making a lot less but feeling so very blessed with the job as I feel like I landed a secure position that I can keep long term. My recommendation is to try to get in with a good company regardless of position and pay especially if you're 50 or over.

    I retired last year (22 years at large hospital network). I was told by a co-worker that the hospital will layoff employees later this year. That same organization has layed off employees every year since 2020 in October, before the holidays. This time their doing it after the holidays! 🙄
    They mostly layoff the administrative staff, so they burnout the ones that are left behind. Glad I invested well into my pension plan! These hospitals are greedy and ruthless the way they treat their employees!

    The layoffs may have been low across all industries, but tech was savaged, as was mortgage to a lesser degree. I lost my job in December of 2022 and it took me until October of 2023 to find a new role (VP-level in tech). I'm in my late 40's and have been working since I was 16 years old. It's never taken me more than 4 weeks to find a job in my life. 2023 was just nuts in the tech sector; if interest rates start coming down again and the VC money starts to flow, it will normalize.

      It is super tough in tech right now. I have over 5 years of experience and have been passed up for multiple jobs because someone with more experience applied. Barely any entry/junior level jobs right now. Lots of people in tech are looking for work right now. I've been looking at transitioning into a different role.

      Yeah, this tracks with what I have been experiencing. I had the "fortune" of working at a mortgage-focused fintech, lol. It was a bloodbath. Hoping 2024 will be better.

      That is the problem. The solution is to let it burn and have a recession hit and deflation everywhere. Companies can then then hire at regular non six fig salaries and houses and cars will be affordable again. You shouldn't have to be an IT director making 175k for a starter home. INsanity!

      @@timgibney5590 The prices of homes and cars have nothing to do with people's salaries; it's simple supply and demand. Houses are expensive right now because the inventory is very low and demand is very high; compound that with higher interest rates, and it's pushing some buyers out of the market completely. What has to happen is that the post-pandemic supply chain issues get fixed so the cost of building materials goes down and homebuilders can start building new homes again, increasing supply.

      I'm in tech as well and it was brutal las year. I myself was laid off after the company decided to outsource to an MSP. I'm curently looking into cloud and AI services as this is where the industry is heading to like Microsoft 365, Azure, Co-Pilot, etc.

    I completed an on line application recently. The job seemed to fit my skills. I got a response within SECONDS saying, "after carefully reviewing your qualifications......." meaning that's how long it took the ATS to figure out my age.

    Graduated at the end of 2022 from my masters in CompSci but I was switching careers, got some interviews but never made it past the last round. They want experience, experience, experience. I'm trying to get certifications to compete, but money is always the issue. I'm trying to stay hopeful, but it's going to be a rough road I think.

      My Nephew just graduated with a B.S. in M.I.S. from UC Berkeley. He is starting his new job at $125k and a $18k signing bonus. So don't give up. He did have a few internships to get experience as I had recommended.

      They don't want experience, they want certainty. They view you as uncertainty. Give them reasons to be certain about their decision making process in that hiring your services it would be a wise decision.

    I graduated with an electrical engineering degree in May 2023, an allegedly "in demand" field. 7 months later and there's absolutely nobody willing to hire entry level engineers in my area, and it's just getting worse. Remote jobs have 1k+ applicants and I know everyone's ATS systems are just throwing away my resume locally because they think they'd rather hold out for that experienced person desperate enough to take the entry level pay. I don't know anyone to try and network with, and it just feels like game over.

      Have you tried your college alumni services? Or tried joining any local organizations, meetup groups, etc that are focused on your field of study? Definitely put effort into networking.

      Apply to other locations as well. Your skills may be in demand elsewhere, and a temporary move can seriously slingshot your career.

      I'm like you and thought a computer science degree was going to be an easy way into the job market as it was so in demand. I graduated December of 2020 and spent 2 years applying to over a thousand job postings to only end up with 5 interviews. I decided to go for my master's in business intelligence and recently graduated. Needless to say I still have yet to get an interview. You're not the only one.

    Two things led to the push for return to work in 2023: (1) Companies were looking to shed workers, and the "return to office" was the tool to do just that. Consider it the garden weeding itself (as the Freakonomics guys mention in one of their books). Unfortunately it worked too well and companies had to dial that back a little bit. I see a much more emphasis on "hybrid" work than a complete return to office today. And (2), the moneyed class realized that all that commercial real estate in their portfolios was going to be worthless if they didn't get butts in chairs in all that square footage. The effects of that are still being calculated.

      The corporate turds still want to see asses in chairs inside their overpaid skyrises and to micromanage in the worst ways possible! It just happened to me recently! Left a contract job on December 22 because the turd IT/Tech manager was being very disrespectful, rude, nasty, mean-spirited, spiteful, and a real asshole of a human! He forced 3 other contractors to quit within a 2, 2 1/2 month period, so I reported the employer and him to the California Department of Labor and the EEOC for discrimination, since he doesn't like Black and Hispanic contractors and employees! As a Hardware, Network and Software Engineer, I'm not going to tolerate that type of behaviors and no one should!

      @@nancykerrigan anecdotally, it's been suggested by employees that their employers were using the return to office as a means of having excess employees quit their jobs instead of having to lay them off. An employee who quits won't collect unemployment or receive severance. But it worked too well, and more employees than expected ended up quitting, so some of these same companies had to go out and hire the missing staff.

The problem is, the talent pool (especially the new generation) reaaally likes the remote option and in some sectors (like tech), it reaaallly makes more sense. Coupled with the aging workforce mentioned (yeah, you can offload the work to the existing hires but most of the times you'll end up burning them out and bolting for the exit, unlike the 90s and 00s, workplace culture has changed and loyalty / grinding for promotion is almost non-existant).

    The 2023 layoffs appear to be a “designed event” since all companies are doing it in an “orchestrated” way while continuing to post record profits every quarter. Why do companies continue to do “share buybacks” in the BILLIONS of dollars to ARTIFICIALLY inflate stock price and engineer results versus using that MONEY/PROFIT to hire/retain talent that increases the potential to increase revenues and innovation?

      I have noticed the same thing. Big companies are copycats and do the same things as their peers. I think it is largely due to Wall Street expectations. Don’t forget, all publicly traded companies work for shareholders and so ballooning stock prices are the only goal.

    I started looking for work back in September. I've only had 2 interviews and over 50 rejection emails. I am sure a lot of it is ageism but even 8 years ago when I was out of work, I only was out for 2 months before getting hired at a new role. It's depressing.

A lot of garages are short handed with mechanics and have to pay the remaining ones a fortune to retain them. Also the medical field , with licensed medical professionals, especially RNs, physicians assistants, nurse practitioners, ultrasound and X-ray techs, physicians in internal medicine and other specialties ect
      There is a shortage of teachers , a lot has retired during and post Covid. A lot of the younger teachers has left this profession due to low pay and disrespectful kids ect

      Yes, those are the obvious ones. I'm interested in learning more about corporate roles that are aging out in industries like tech, advertising, finance, etc. My background is in SaaS software and cannabis. I wish they would have taught me that trades were an option when I was young but unfortunately we were still working with hard-core gender roles and home ec classes. All they ever talked about was the track to university. I wish I knew those options were out there for women when I was a kid. I might have chosen a different path.

    I absolutely despise companies that enforce office job when the job can happen remotely, there's no bloody reason I as an Individual have to force my ass and commute for 1-2 hours to sit in an office chair and work on a laptop, whereas I can still do it at my home and have some time with family. Afterall humans work for a better quality of life, companies are doomed if they keep pushing these agendas, remote work is superior, Period.

At my company, one of my coworkers is having his 36th anniversary with the company which is unheard of! Most companies expect tenure but they don’t want it. So better get used to the reality of people switching jobs 2-3 because companies brought this upon themselves for their behaviors

    I don't know if this will be the future of fast food, but at McDonald's in the Walmart I went to yesterday, in place of walk up ordering counter was a self-service kiosk. There was just one employee whose sole duty was to hand customers their orders.

    Companies love contractors. They don't pay benefits and they can toss you aside at any time with no severance. They also don't have to give you raises and they will stick you in a corner until your contract runs out.
    I've gone to business town halls and one CEO complained about wager inflation. I'm sure that's being echoed though out the industry. The gap continues to widen.

      But contractors are setting up their own raises… And those are way beyond 2% that you will get from employers.

      Contractors also spike in wages. If they want to keep you on board you increase the case wage 30-70% each year. Also your starting wage shall be no less than 60% more than the average.

    As a college graduate with a 3.75 GPA, with zero related work experience and relatable transferable skills, I cannot get hired, except to work at Amazon warehouses, which I gave done and going back to, completing with high school graduates for low wage jobs on food service, food markets and retail. HOW SAD IS THAT❓I busted my ass in college with high hopes as college was hard for me, but I did it and happy I did. I know the longer I go without relatable skills and experiences, the harder it gets to find that career path. What a sad world to live in. I WISH I went to some kind of trade school………

    I work for a large company that resulted in a contract role for the last three years. They have let people go at the end of 22 and 23, and had told they would bring back contract work but reneged on it because of budget. My contract is up in July but honestly I don’t see myself being there till then. I’m expecting second quarter to be told I would no longer needed. I would love to say what I think but will not be derogatory. Love your videos for the last three years

      Do what you can for a stable job. HR will start to require no gaps and no job hoppers again when a recession hits. Maybe take a job a step under you if it's a permanent role. After 2 years making less money you can then go back again to your current role. I know what I said sounds ridiculous but it is how I survived in 2010. HR doesn't care about contractors. They hang out at the finish line and hire the winners. Winners meaning perm folks. You got 6 months so go hit the pavement and apply for any permanent roles

    something thats really bad right now is also jobs in basic starter jobs such as fast food and grocery stores. Personally I am done working fast food, ive done it for far to long and its not going to help me progress any further. So ive been looking into grocery stores yet all of them are similar to fast food where they are "hiring" yet they could not give me an answer as to why my application has been on file for 4 months and has not been denied. Still no update after speaking to the hiring manager multiple times and STUDDERING when I would confront her and she didnt have an answer. They are finacially hurting just like everyone else and just as this channel as mentioned, they are trying to protect their company incase of a downfall.

      My wife has been in food service for 13 years. She applied everywhere, constantly. Eventually she ended up taking a pay cut and working at Taco Bell, and that was a miracle. We can pay our rent now.

    I quit my job at a global fortune 500 company due to serious burnout, lack of training and an overall toxic environment. They threw AI at us and all the changes made my job pretty challenging. In have 15 years of experience and was making around 75k per year. Job searching right now has been discouraging. Being offered entry level jobs/pay its sad.

    I work for Amazon and am loosing my job as I cannot move to Seattle… I was hired into a remote slot and from a state that has zero corporate office presence… thus, was told move to Seattle or hit the road. My last day is March 29th and honestly I’m terrified of not being able to find another job. I’m a single income and am extremely nervous

    Layoffs have been hitting contractors too all through 2023 many were terminated early. Especially in public services.
    Inflation has not dipped in Canada, it's expected to get even worse this year. Idk what govs expect ppl to do, everyone's already at breaking points. I'm assuming many bankruptcies this year in my country.

    I agree Brian. I think that for white collar jobs the new normal will be a hybrid model which means that as you pointed out it will require you to stay in an urban or suburban area.

      I worked for a large company that went through this 10 years early - and it was the remote model that won out for many jobs. Unless you have to go onsite for a useful purpose, such as to use a piece of equipment, I found the hybrid model to be the worst of both worlds. If all you do is work at a desk and discuss items with others a few hours a week then hybrid just keeps you constantly changing your work environment, so you never get in a rhythm or optimized. Company cafeterias often go downhill first with fewer people around, then cleaning and other services get harder to justify when the workplace is often empty. With things being less pleasant workers tend to find more excuses to be away - until after a few years only the people who really need to be onsite or who don't have a good home workspace show up.
      There have been layoffs in certain industries, but much of that seems to be an overreaction by companies that anticipated a downturn that didn't occur. Other industries still can't find enough workers, the workforce is limited by an aging population, and there is a ton of government infrastructure and military funding entering the economy. I'd say that within a year we will be back to companies being happy to hire whoever they can get - and making accommodations when necessary.

Thanks to the baby boomers they have sustained for a long time , because most baby boomers were brainwashed to believe that staying long term would reap them pensions, seniority , a lot of vacation ect By staying until retirement would make their organization be “loyal” to them . But that is the biggest lie, the past three decades organizations has started stealing pensions, closing down and laying off employees or had mergers that caused many long term employees to get laid off (reorganization schemes ) ect Those baby boomers are aging out and retiring and have specific skills for their industry that is not taught in colleges. Decades ago companies were willing to train employees with no experience right out of high school & college. Now every job you see posted requires experience, even for entry-level jobs , yet the salaries offered doesn’t match what the employer expects the job seeker to be qualified for. Another dirty deceptive thing employers are doing is changing the job title to a entry level title, but it’s really for a higher skilled level job so they can justify the low salary. For example I am seeing a lot of administrative assistant jobs (used to mostly be secretary or office assistant general clerical job). But when you read the qualifications they are requiring the person applying to be bilingual, have quick books or bookkeeping experience, excel experience , knowledge of using specific financial computer software that their organization uses , bachelor’s degrees, 2-3 years experience ect When you check out the salary offered it’s low wages . If they posted that the job with the correct job title of Bookkeeper the salary range would have to be significantly higher. A lot of scams out there, they feel like they can take advantage now because of the state the economy is right now. But those tables are going to turn because you get what you pay for!! They will burnout their current employees who will eventually leave either by finding another job or retirement. They will eventually become so short staffed that they will lose business and have to file bankruptcy or shutdown due to their inability to value their employees and pay them what they deserve.

    Simple advise to people still employed in IT always work in direction to add value to business, dont try to apply and learn the fancy tech from influencers just for adventure. Keep it simple. Essential survival tip.

    It's basically impossible to move back to "an employment base", especially if you're entry level making relatively low wages. Housing is too expensive there now. It wasn't this bad before the pandemic.

    Great topic! Thank you! Nebraska state demanded their employees return to work as of Jan 2024. It is a big big debate. One reason is office space in Omaha is empty and the building owners do not have occupancy. It affect their ability to get loans etc. and owners have clout in political arena. So far, employees many have it in their contract as remote are still remote. Droves of people are 'leaving' to nearby states for same jobs, who at their state level allows for remote work. IA, KS, SD, CO, WY, MO.

    I've given up on tech, I have a PhD in telecommunications from my home country (North Africa), but am working as a French language teacher. I'm trying to register for a 1 year AI program in a college, but I don't even put much hope into that degree. I'm mostly doing it not to have regrets later.
    I feel like everyone wants the same software/AI/gamedev jobs so of course it's gonna be tough to be hired. Nobody wants to do plumbing or carpentry. In the city where I live, there's a lack of bus drivers, but nobody takes a hint and goes to these jobs. Us millenials and Zoomers only want to work at our computers, hence shooting ourselves in the foot.

    What I think we're seeing is a return to the valuing of loyalty AND a shift from large conglomerates to decentralized work. Contract work is gaining traction for a variety of reasons, as a simple example.

      I hope contract work will not take off. I've held three contract positions in the last 3 years and got laid off of each one of them only to have five plus months of no work after each one of those jobs. To me, contract work equals instability.

      Yeah I have seen a lot of contract work but don’t want to do it. I am not sure about the loyalty part though. I was loyal to a fault! I think all of the new c suite got amazing deals and the time to pull the parachute clause is coming quickly. They need to learn some loyalty but won’t.

      @@KinniMooYeah. I am currently at 1 year since I last had a job. And the rest of the job market doesn't look great. From fake job postings or jobs that only to be intended to be filled by internal employees, I don't see myself getting a job even this year. That will mean that I will end up going two years of not having a job that is relevant to my (laughable) career. I think the gaps are killing my chances of getting any kind of job at this point, and only getting worse every month that goes by.

      @@Denastus I understand! I am lost without my job. Obviously not having a paycheck is a nightmare, but getting laid off totally knocked me off my game. I had learned so much and, in my 50’s actually felt like I had a career and loved my job. I didn’t realize how much of who I was came from my job. Now that month 5 is trudging away and I see so many of you that have hit the year + line, I am terrified. I can’t believe how hard it is to even get an interview!! I have made it to two final interviews (out of the maybe 4 or 5 interviews I have had) but nothing. I hope we are both proven wrong about the job prospects this year and we land good jobs. Oh and I have gotten the fake interview requests too. It is really cruel. Good luck with your search! 2024 has to be better! The bar is really low!

    Funny you say hitting the job listings is the slowest way to get a job. In WA to collect unemployment they require that you hit them and do other "job search activity". Unfortunately, updating linkedin, contributing, etc. does not count. I imagine the same is true in some other states.

      I suggest learning a new trade as a lot IT roles will be eliminated in the next 1-2 years due to AI being the obvious reason.
      Went to school for IT/Cybersecurity, was searching for about 2 years for entry level positions with no luck, I have moved on from trying anymore and basically wasted money on school and certifications just to realize that I am competing against a thousand applicants with working experience which I do not have. I’ve cut my losses and have moved on to something different.

    going to be interesting to see jobs shrink because of AI and how the public reacts to it. wiping out thousands of jobs but introducing a few hundred.... thats an interesting balance. Maybe there will be a swing back to STEM jobs as AI and automation cant do much of that. not yet at least.

    Today was the 3rd time in the last 4 months that I've had an interview cancelled last minute (the day of the scheduled call). In all three cases, they were fortune 500 companies. I'm beginning to feel these postings aren't real and they're just not serious about filling the positions. If this is any indication of the future, I don't see 2024 getting any better.

      They’re lying. They lie with statistics. Many who can work have given up and left the applicant pool. Companies who fired but give severance packages are also not included in the unemployment numbers since those people are still on the company’s payroll.
      There are a lot of ways around reporting the truth.
      We won’t get the truth this year in the US since it’s an election year, so the current Administration will hide the ugly reality.

    Do a lot of US companies outsource outside of the US? I’ve seen a lot of remote/ work from home jobs that are restricted to US citizens/residents only.
