I saw a doc on Anne Murray last week and they talked about this performance. They had little time to get it together and David Foster, the legendary producer then and now, felt if they got Anne on board, the rest would fall into place. They showed one of his team on the phone when he got word Anne was in and he was so excited he jumped around like a little kid.

When the musicians were singing for this video, David Foster (the Pianist/Director) also a Canadian, told Neil Young that he was a little off tune. Neil responded by saying "Hey Man, that's my style". Neil Young being off-tune was left in.
The person you didn't know at the beginning was Dan Hill of "Sometimes When We Touch" fame.
John Candy was definitely in this video as was Oscar Peterson, Carol Pope, Ronny Hawkins, Murray McLaughlin and so very many others.

Understandibly, you wouldn't recognize French Canadian singers like Véronique Béliveau, Robert Charlebois and Claude Dubois. Charlebois was quite a big deal, releasing 21 albums from 1965 to 2010, and composing several film scores. But most of the French-language singers at the time were in a separate famine relief video called "Les Yeux de la faim," and this included folk legend Gilles Vigneault, and a young teenage Céline Dion, already a star in Canada and Europe, but not yet known in the U.S.
But, back to Tears Are Not Enough: Some of the singers were one-hit wonders of the time, but most had substantial careers. Bruce Cockburn, Murray McLauchlan, Carol Pope, Jane Sibbery and Kim Mitchell are all worth your checking into. Kim Mitchell's solo work as well as his band Max Webster are textbooks for how to make intelligent rock, doing sophisticated stuff while never abandoning their suburban teenage following. Little noticed in the video is the greatest jazz pianist of all time, Oscar Peterson. Few people know that he had a fine singing voice. Liona Boyd is one of the greatest classical guitarists, usually considered the "Queen" alongside the "King," Andrés Segovia (who shared that opinion). Salome Bey was a fine classic blues singer. Ronnie Hawkins, resplendent in his snowy beard, was a major figure of late 1950's Rock'n'Roll. He was Arkansas born, but spent most of career in Canada. He and his Arkansas buddy Levon Helm, and the brilliant Robbie Robertson were hot items in Toronto's notorious Le Coq d'Or, a venue famous for spectacular bar fights. This was long before The Band came into existence.

The 80's was an incredible time for music. I was born in 62 and the 80's was my decade. Music was my life at that time. Concerts every weekend. In that 10 year period I went to almost 300 concerts. It was an incredible time to be in your 20's. I can't help but think of that decade and smile. I saw Tom Cochrane and Red Rider close to a dozen times. But one of my favorite bands of that decade was from your neck of the woods. Blue Oyster Cult. I saw them twice. Thanks for doing these videos and keep them coming.

Hey DJ, yeah. I’m a little younger but I started going to concerts in the 80s. My older brother gave me hell at home but he was a great musical influence on me and did drag his little bro to concerts as a jr high schooler. I saw the Who, Stones, the Dead, U2, Pink Floyd and more with him in the 80s. And yessir, Blue Oyster Cult is from Long Island along with the likes of Pat Benitar, Billy Joel, Stray Cats, Dee Snyder from Twisted Sister and many more. Nice trivia knowledge about BOC - a great band.

Jim Vallance is on drums. Paul Dean of Loverboy on guitars 🎸. Instruments recorded in Little Mountain ⛰ Sound Studios 🎙, Vancouver. The singers were recorded in Toronto. Engineered by Vallance and Bob Rock.
David Foster got the celebrities. Bruce Allen, manager of him, Bryan Adams, Loverboy, BTO, Prism, Payola$) handled the business side. The documentary shows more details.
    Full credits are in Wikipedia.
Not Canadian but sang. Late Ronnie Hawkins of The Band (born in USA 🇺🇸), Paul Hyde of The Payola$ (born in UK 🇬🇧) and Alfie Zappacosta (born in Italy 🇮🇹).
Late John Candy, Gene Levy (before American Pie), Catherine O'Hara (before Home Alone), Lisa Dalbello, Dan Hill,, Bruce Cockburn, Tom Cochrane, Mike Reno of Loverboy, Geddy Lee of Rush, Kim Mitchell of Max Webster were some of the singers.
In the documentary, Foster had Neil Young sing his line 3 times. He was offkey, to the detriment of Foster. Young responded, "Well, that's how I sing it, man 👨!" He referred to the Bob Dylan singing in We Are the World 🌎. The singers there laughed! L 🤣 L
Adams sang at Live Aid. Jack Nicholson introduced him in Philadelphia.
In 2022, Bryan Adams, Jim Vallance, David Foster and Alanis Morissette (not in this recording) were honored with lifetime achievement awards at the Canadian Songwriters Hall of Fame. They, Corey Hart and other Canadians sang Tears Are Not Enough . That 2022 award ceremony is on YT. Many parts!

Like this a thousand times! There's a good documentary about how this all came together really very quickly - getting everyone to Toronto to record was quite a feat. At the entrance to the studio, a sign was posted that said "Check your egos at the door."
John Candy was interviewed by the film crew and he said: 'don't talk to me, I'm not a singer. I'm just here to help out.' That really was the vibe. I also think this is a particularly good song - it's still popular here. 😃

The project was organized by Ronnie James Dio, Jimmy Bain, and Vivian Campbell, all from the band Dio. Proceeds from the album were used to raise over $3 million for famine relief in Africa.

I can't believe I remembered the words.. sang this in high school too but haven't heard this since the 80's.
The memories.. also recognized quite a few Montrealers.. pianist Oscar Peterson and redhead QC actress/singer Monique(Veronique), singers Andy Kim(Baron Longfellow), Robert Charlebois(how can I forget his nose) and Cory.. Hehe..
Note: there is a vid out there that has 'captioned' the most of singers names

I remember this well, but have to admit I only remembered a handful of the participants, so I googled it, and to my surprise Wayne Gretzky and the NHL all stars, ( I assume from that year), were also present. Various other personalities from that period that aren’t singers were also listed and I don’t remember any of them, including John Candy, being in it. Hey, I’m closing in on 71, cut me some slack. On another note, please don’t change a thing with your videos, I’m an enthusiastic supporter.

Carol Pope from Rough Trade in the red leather outfit, the lead singer from Platinum Blonde, Ronnie Hawkins , Murray McLauchlan and David Foster conducting.

I doubt if Foster arranged it but the national anthem at the opening ceremony of the Calgary Olympics is the best arrangement of it I've ever heard. First half starts out slow, not so great, but builds to a great crescendo GLORIOUS AND FREE and then into a French section with a large choir and orchestral ending. Brilliant! Even ABC's Jim McKay made a comment about it.

Thank you so much for reacting to this. While ultimately, a lot of the funds raised from these charitable efforts ended up going to corrupt African governments, and there has been much criticism levied against the artists who got involved with them because of the increase in their record sales they enjoyed due to their participation, I do believe their hearts were in the right place in getting involved. This is especially true of people like Bob Geldof and Harry Belafonte, who traveled to Africa on multiple occasions and were politically involved in trying to make meaningful change. Bob is still involved in these efforts to this day, and Harry was involved right up until his death.
For me, these charity mega-songs are snapshots of what popular music (or you could say popular culture) was at the time. I love watching people discover this one in particular, since it wasn't a hit outside of Canada.
For posterity, the only Canadian who was involved in the main arm of Live Aid was Bryan Adams. More Canadians got involved in Live 8 in 2005, both on our domestic stage in Barrie, Ontario, and on other stages (Sarah McLachlan, for instance, performed in Philadelphia).

As someone who was around then and loved this relief effort (and song) I can only imagine the star power that has come along since many of these people built an industry. There has been a scary amount of famed talent since then, especially the women: Shania, Celine, Alanis, Sarah, kd to name a few. Even the ones many Canadians can't stand are huge, ie Bieber and Nickelback

My parents took me there as a kid and I have been a friend of Canada ever since but I only relatively recently came to realize that I didn’t know Canadian history as well as I’d like to or should and that jumped started this journey that I’ve been on with twists, turns and detours into all manner of topics of our shared history and culture and our differences as well.
