      That’s a good point that gets blown over when discussing other difficult battles. Like people try to gloss over the Whitney battle now and say that you can just get a Machop or heracross to handle her easily, but the first time you battled her, you had no idea what was coming and probably didn’t spend a lot of time hunting trees and searching out the trade.

    Evice in general is one of the toughest battles in Pokemon, probably second to Cynthia. His entire team just screams dangerous and I can definitely remember having trouble with both his Scizor and Salamence, as soon as they pop-off Dragon Dance or Silver Wind/Swords Dance it can lead to an instant team sweep. You are so right about the Slowking/Slaking combo though, the first time I saw that work there was no coming back - take down the Slowking as soon as it appears!

    • @ebering4.039
      @ebering4.039 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Honestly, compared to Cynthia Evice is way harder imo.
      You have to take the rest of their respective games into the mix. Colosseum gives you 40 pokemon at most to build your team whereas Pokemon dp where cynthia is arguably more difficult than platinum, lets you have a choice from over a 100 in the regional dex. Also, level curve, if you aren‘t heavily grinding then Evice on average will be at least 10 levels higher than you. Couple that with your rather poor choices of pokemon then you are f-ed. Not to mention that you also have the stress of catching a shadow t-tar. Cynthia very much can be cheesed through multiple ways.

    At least you gave Whitney’s miltank an honourable mention because it’s the very monstrosity that makes Whitney the toughest gym leader in the johto games and I speak from experience because she kicked both mine and my older brother’s butts about a hundred times each when we were kids

    • @RyanNash20
      @RyanNash20 ปีที่แล้ว +14

      She was rough as a kid, as an adult she's always super easy. Having a firm understanding of the game mechanics makes her pretty trivial. My last playthrough I was underleveled, but my croconaw was still faster than Miltank. Taught him fury cutter and he just KOd first because fury cutter damage got to start building before rollout. Machop destroys miltank. Onyx can screech miltank 2 times before fainting usually and let another member clean up. Lots of ways to make that fight super easy.
      But yea, Whitney whooped my butt up and down a few times as a kid.

    • @lawfrey3859
      @lawfrey3859 ปีที่แล้ว

      As a kid, the 2 Johto fights I remember struggling with were Jasmine and Claire. Jasmine probably had me wiping more than any other gym in any Pokémon game I've played. But as a kid, I was also pretty much just using my starter that was way overleveled since it took every fight, bruteforcing the game. Like, I remember always having my starter at its final evolution against Whitney around lvl.36, pretty much 1-2 shotting the Miltank, then going on to outspeed and 1-2 shot all of Morty's mons right after. Wasn't until Jasmine that the single overleveled Pokémon started to struggle, between steel being a weird type to encounter in early gen 2 and all the paralysis spam in her gym.
      I've never played the more modern games, but I imagine they're a bit more challenging to the point you can't just take every fight with your starter, end up outleveling opponents by 20 levels by the 3rd gym and continue to steamroll the game. Pretty sure my starter was 65 or something when getting to the Elite Four in Gold as a kid, who all had Pokémon in the 40s. The game kind of hits a lull where it feels like you're fighting enemies in the 20s and 30s for 80% of it. Which in retrospect I think is to pace it in a way where you can organically level up a team.

    Whats funny about Morty in Gen 4 is that Noctowl is basically an instant win condition against Gengar. Shadow Ball and Hypnosis have no effect since Noctowl is a Normal Type with Insomniac, and Mean Look literally doesn't matter, which means if you just stall out 5 turns of Sucker Punch Morty's Gengar cannot touch you.

    • @jonahdengler3858
      @jonahdengler3858 ปีที่แล้ว

      I was able to beat it with a couple of Outrages from my Haxorus, though.
      1. Thanks to my Haxorus being a little faster than hers, I was able to launch an Outrage.
      2. I let the Focus Sash activate, then let her use Dragon Dance one time
      3. Iris will use a Full Restore, due to a low amount of health
      4. Since restoration and using a “powering up” move can leave you as an easy target, my Haxorus just simply finishes it off with one final Outrage
      She does sometimes have a tendency to use Outrage herself, though, but at least my Haxorus can withstand the attack.

      Generally my ace is my starter in like 99% of my playthroughs, but there are two notable exceptions - Lucario in Black 2, and Azumarill in Violet.
      However, there are some pokemons that werent my aces, but were notable parts of my team when i never expected them to be. I think the best example is Vivillon - an early route bug, only 411 BST, you dont expect much from that thing, right? Well... Flying Tera, Compound Eyes and Hurricane. If it hits, you better have Sturdy, otherwise you die.
      But i think one of my most satisfying moments in Pokemon was defeating the totem Kommo-o with a Ribombee. I know, it is quad weak to Fairy. But one shotting a giant fearsome punching dragon using a tiny cute bee-like bug is something special.

    7:17 You have no idea how much of a massive help this one simple sentence is going to be for me. I've been working on a project of renumbering the National Pokédex to consolidate cross-generational evolutionary lines and make each regional Dex more closely follow the geography and encounter order of its region and there are some placements I've spent hours agonizing over because there's no ideal place to put them.
    This sentence clears up the much bigger issue I've been wrestling with, though - why I would follow the narrative path for each region when I'm trying to be story-agnostic with the placements as much as possible. For example, why am I delaying water encounters until after the player has acquired the better fishing rods or Surf and not just assuming they have those tools and abilities from the beginning?
    And there's the answer. It's more than just a version of the Pokédex that academics like the Pokémon professors might actually publish that I'm making; it's also a Gym guide. There are still a few places where I'll have to tweak certain encounter orders but it is going to get so much easier approaching it like this.

    In HG SS, another answer for Morty's Ganger is a normal type with a non-attacking move. You can pp stall sucker punch for 5 moves and then it can't touch your pokemon for any damage.

    What I tell people is get your hands on an Eevee evolve it into Jolteon you are able to do this before Iono you have to go to the area that has the bombirdier titan and grab a thunderstone
    Tera normal Jolteon and water absorb Clodsire dominate Iono

    I wish they'd give slaking a new ability like moxie or something which would fit because as a parent if someone messes with your baby you're going to get violent lol and when slaking has this ability instead of laying down it should stand up, postured like a gorilla. It's my favorite evolution line because they resemble the family unit. Slakoth being the helpless baby that needs raised, vigoroth being the wild teenager and slaking being the parent. Slaking has so much potential to be amazing gameplay and visually wise

    If I'm being honest, Morty's Gengar in HGSS was never a challenge, primarily because I use Togepi, and even at low level, Togepi still managed to take out Gengar with Sweet Kiss, followed by Extrasensory. And somehow, Morty never got the idea to use Hypnosis to somehow keep me from shutting him out. He'd just spam Shadow Ball even though it doesn't affect Togepi, and his Sucker Punch ran out of uses before he could get the KO on me.
    Hard to believe my Togepi, which was practically half Gengar's level, managed to secure what my Quilava just couldn't do.

    I like that you at least mentioned Whitney's miltank, but I believe it should've been on the list at least in top 5, but only for gen 2 and not gen 4. The gen 2 npc RNG was absolutely busted. Even with a Machop this fight is entirely luck based and I couldn't tell you how many times I've lost to her growing up. Paralysis from stomp, being infatuated, and miltank just overall being tanky even if you do get a hit off, it's just an absolute rage inducing fight.
