As someone who got into Arknights because of Thorns and was committed to rerolling for him when he was available through Joint Operation, it's Surtr time.
This is huge, I finally will get Gladiia from under tides record restoration and now Surtr and Thorns will be available to purchase in shop. This is a Christmas blessing for sure.
Thorns was like my fourth ever six star unit, spooking me at a random tenpull. Completely changed how I play the game, 10/10 unit. This, of course, means I'll be grabbing Surtr, since I already have him, so...
It looks like I'm going to miss Surtr in the shop again. First time I just started playing and didn't have enough certs. Now I've spent all certs on Suzuran and Eja, an I'm holding my pulls for Eja alter.
Surtr was the first yellow cert operator that I gotten when I started and she also became my second E2. Meanwhile Thorns has been my to go to borrow operator in the early days and I wanted him since. Unfortunately his yellow cert debut happened just before I started playing and I have been awaiting him since then. At long last I will get him.

another thing to consider is that thorns will be added to the recruitment pool with eyja alter event whereas surtr hasn't been added yet even in CN. this is making my decision on who to pick really hard...

They are Day 1 6* that aren’t in Recruitment. At this points, I feel like they are considered as Banner only Operators, just like Cardigan for whatever reason. But the fact that they are moved to than Blue Banner does not help.
IMO Thorns is realy good for AFK clears, but he is often replaceable. Surtr is much more clutch operator for realy difficult content. So if you are struggling with content such as: "H" stages, EX CM stages, high Contingency Contracts (CC) scores and high level Integrated Strategies (IS) - Surtr is more important to own than Thorns.
Honestly, I agree. In a lot of places where his range isn't needed, Mountain is a more than worthy replacement and only needs S2 to be the most useful. Ofc E2 and M3 are good investments on both, but the baseline is very different. Also there are two other reasons. One is Nicheknights and two is that a lot of older (trust farm) guides use him.
So glad I got thorns on the last joint op banner, I was saving certs for him forever, decided to gamble and lucked out, now I can have some yellow certs for eyjalter in case I need them.
I have exactly 180 g certs and don't have surtr/thorns but saving the certs for emergency pulls in case eyjalter banner goes horribly wrong (mumu took 187 pulls) is this 0 sanity moment?
@@billybobjoe4847 it’s not 0 sanity, it’s a fair reasoning. So far, Standard 50% rate up and even regular banners have been more traumatic, hence why I’m less worried about Eyjalter and a lot more worried about Exealtet and Typhon, also why I’ve started 1-7 farming
I'm lined up to forfeit my mortal possessions for Thorns if I have to. At least 25 Pity on Standard but only 50 Certs. (Schwarz didn't want to come home during Locating.) And I don't want to bet on my honestly too high Recruitment luck. Since he, Andreana and others are added to that pool with the Eyja Alter event. Which this Banner should run during. Only Ægir units I'm missing then are Mizuki and Skadi. Since Gladiia is in Record Restoration in a few days (I'm ready) and Andreana can be gotten through the 5* Selector if need be. Then I'll prioritise Thorns and start building up the rest my Ægirknights Squad.
Btw, I tried getting yellow certs from expediting recruitment, but they only give me 3 stars when I do that. In 100 recruitment permits, I only got 4 4 stars. Anyone else have this problem? Or maybe ingame bug?

@@dagyoo Yea, I've been using the site to check tags. But the tags are not showing up whenever i rush recruitment. They only appear if i wait the 7:40 or 9 hours full time. Whenever i rush with expedited, only 3 star tags show up except every maybe 25 recruitments or so, which is off rate from what it says the rate should be
The tag most provide 4 star is the one with crowd control, fast redeploy, nuker, debuff summon, and specialist shift or push, if there a tag starter then all that tag have more chance to give ⭐2 and 3 (expect the one i mention). So tips from me always refresh and expedite 9 hours especially for the tags i mention, you can fast the expedition with coupon expedition
I am now coping for a rerun event next year before the Thorns banner ends to get to 180 gold certs. Those event shop operator potentials is my only way to get there. I have 600 pulls worth of Orondum and OP combined that I saved FOR A WHOLE YEAR just to get Moist Chen and I am not willing to spend them on his banner.
Yeah, there are also more laneholders in the game and a very strong one on the banner right now. If it's boss-killing only, then they don't really match Ebenholz' damage imo

The thing about the goat healer that she is limited, that means she is extremely hard to get outside of her one time banner, surtr is definitely stronger so it is a hard choice
Unless you don't have an operator to do big dmg, go for Surtr. But only if you need her. While she's an amazing meta unit, she's not the only one that can kill bosses for you. And remember, limited operators are much harder to get once their banner is gone (not counting collab operators).

Surtr came home from the free permits for me, as a red color enjoyer, that girl is perfect and now that I got Lumen, can start thinking about making those clears with only Surtr as the dps while a bunch of medics keep her alive lol I do recommend buying her over Thorns for those who are unsure, but if you really, really need a lane holder that also deals arts dmg, go for the boi, he is strong too.

I just think we have a lot of units that can do similar stuff, Im playing since the end of december of the last year without him, ofc when I started things were rough but Lappland was solid enough to help me progress then I got even more solid units like Gavialter, Irene, Pozy, etc so my personal need for him was on the lower side. Meanwhile Surtr can straight up say f you to a boss and kill them anyways, so if you need to kill bosses, theres an obvious choice.

Because Thorns used in more content. Surtr is obviously top 5 operator in the game, but you only use her for boss killing, and now they also have a lot of other boss killers like Pozy and Mlynar or soon Typhon.
Surtr is a boss killer and a temporary lane holder. She's useful but her respawn time of 70 seconds is a forever wait. Another down side is that she can't attack aerial enemy's so she losses in some hilarious easy stages. Thorns also has a bigger payoff by being more permanent, In my opinion, Surtr's only useful skill is skill 3 and skill 3 kills her at the end, no matter what. Thorns is more useful generally. If you have Silver Ash, and are thinking, go with Surtr as you already have some one similar to Thorns.
Already get surtr cause i waiting her for so long time, and her is my first priority 😩 about thorn need 20 certificate again to get him in the next shop. I've had the exact opposite experience. You can use Surtr to make basically any stage easier. I haven't really found a stage where she isn't useful. Thorns on the other hand is nice to have on most stages. But he can usually be replaced for his role by someone else in my roster. Theres been stages where the only reason I got through due to surtr. Surtr gets her power almost instantly. Though she pays for it with being on a time limit, she can actually use that time to the utmost every time. Thorns...not really. Granted, I do have a large roster of E2 powerhouses, but I don't bother with much of a strategy either. In the early stages of any even you just need two or three operators to steamroll them anyway. Whether one of them is Thorns or whether you replace him with two 5* doesn't make a difference. Well, that being said, I'm at the stage of the game where I wouldn't buy anything from yellow certificates...so yeah. I rather use them for pulls.
You'll get 24 free pulls (10+14 singles) from the Executor banner. That'll get you to 180 without issues, and you'll maybe even get another busted 6* while doing it :)

You just need to do more headhunting(roll) or just get lucky in the recruitment. And you need a lot of yellow certificates(85 Certificates is kinda a lot for you, i think), i hope you get the necessary for one or two OP. TBH this will be difficult for you. :/
As a new player there is a good way to get yellow certificates and some good operators at the same time First farm red certificates Second buy the disk thingy that cost 20 red certificates Third, in the main screen next to friends you will find a section called archive click on it then go to intelligence then click special operation choose the operator you want and buy it with the disk thingy you bought from the red certificate shop earlier Fourth, profit 📈
@@noshistakenagain the really long missions where you have to kill 400 enemies and grant you orundum on completion. They are on their on section of the terminal so maybe you haven't unlocked them.

@@brochange123 i had both texalter and kirin yato, also had pozy, rosa, and schwarz for bosskilling. if you had either texalter or yato and one of the bosskiller i mentioned plus atleast one buffer and debuffer ( pramanix or shamare || skalter or sora ). i would say you dont really need surtr, she's really good dont get me wrong, but those combination i mentioned above is highly effective. both heavyshotter and besieger has low aspd, bards cannot attack, and hexers didnt do much damage as well. thorn could replace a sniper as he can attack both air and ground up to 3 tile in front of him. upon 2nd activation, 3rd skill becomes infinite and boost its atk by +120%, which means its more than double damage. high aspd and arts damage over time. he can also heal himself over time when not attacked by the enemy.
I have both and Surtr is far more difficult to replace on boss stages. Thorns shines in annihilation missions but since you usually only clear those once you can just borrow him

Well you shouldn't go below 7:40 anyways, if you don't get tags for 4 star operator don't select any tag and there will be a chance to get a 4 star

I just bought Weed(y) and Nightingale and I'm 37 cert off from 180. The Thorns is not in me. NOOOOOOOOOO!

Surt is a game changer, there are better laneholders than Thorns but Surt is, along Mlynar, the best boss killer + wave clearer

I think Thorns sees more use in general but he's also more replaceable.

Got both in my first 2 months : if you have to choose , get thorns . You can bring in any stages . Sutr is brute force but not always mandatory

Still, you should get 3 singles from the event shop and you can use the OP from the stages to gather up a few more pulls. 11 golden certs in 2 weeks really isn't hard to do (unless you're just starting up).

Btw, I'm in a similar situation here. I want Surtr to complete my ungabunga team. Was at 80 yellow certs. I had ~100 pulls saved up and got Executor after 47 :D

You just need to do more headhunting(roll) or just get lucky in the recruitment.
And you need a lot of yellow certificates(85 Certificates is kinda a lot for you, i think), i hope you get the necessary for one or two OP.
TBH this will be difficult for you. :/
As a new player there is a good way to get yellow certificates and some good operators at the same time
First farm red certificates
Second buy the disk thingy that cost 20 red certificates
Third, in the main screen next to friends you will find a section called archive click on it then go to intelligence then click special operation choose the operator you want and buy it with the disk thingy you bought from the red certificate shop earlier
Fourth, profit 📈
This one may be a lot more difficult to achieve but the first three annihilations in the game give out a lot of yellow certificates on completion.

@@noshistakenagain the really long missions where you have to kill 400 enemies and grant you orundum on completion. They are on their on section of the terminal so maybe you haven't unlocked them.

@@brochange123 i had both texalter and kirin yato, also had pozy, rosa, and schwarz for bosskilling. if you had either texalter or yato and one of the bosskiller i mentioned plus atleast one buffer and debuffer ( pramanix or shamare || skalter or sora ).
i would say you dont really need surtr, she's really good dont get me wrong, but those combination i mentioned above is highly effective.
both heavyshotter and besieger has low aspd, bards cannot attack, and hexers didnt do much damage as well.
thorn could replace a sniper as he can attack both air and ground up to 3 tile in front of him.
upon 2nd activation, 3rd skill becomes infinite and boost its atk by +120%, which means its more than double damage. high aspd and arts damage over time.
he can also heal himself over time when not attacked by the enemy.
Lol I don't have both so I'm in a bind. But I'm thinking Thorn because he's strong but want Surtr because she's a waifu. Though choice for f2p
Thorns is more replaceable, I didn't use him as much as Surtr
do it for the waifu trust
I have both and Surtr is far more difficult to replace on boss stages. Thorns shines in annihilation missions but since you usually only clear those once you can just borrow him
Thorns is a male, and I'm a "all-waifu" guy (except for Mlynar uncle), so the choice is easy for me
