Turkish Airlines jet makes emergency landing at JFK after pilot dies mid-air

- The plane was flying from Seattle to Istanbul when it was diverted to New York City for an emergency landing after "one of the pilots suffered a medical emergency," according to the FAA.

I am a Flight Attendant for one of the big 3 airlines. 27 yrs ago my roommate was working a domestic flight out of DFW when the Captain went into cardiac rest shortly after take off. My roommate was performing CPR in the entryway to the flight deck w/ another Flight Attendant assisting. They diverted w/ just the First Officer flying and were on the ground in 12 mins. Unfortunately, the Captain did not survive. We were all trained after this event on how to operate the pilot seats and seatbelt harness to extract an impaired pilot as quickly as possible.

It's happened to another pilot a couple years ago, right after he took the jab. The story was swept under the rug very quickly. It does happen, nobody wants to talk about it.
I feel like there should always be a doctor on board
A doctor is going to be able to do precisely nothing without proper medical equipment and extra hands. Probably a PE, heart attack or stroke that killed this pilot. None of which a doctor will be able to do anything with. Those all require surgical intervention with lots of specialized equipment.
not much can be done by a doctor, if he is having cardiac arrest, you need to resus him. airway protection, intubate, iv lines, high flow oxygen. none of them are available in flight
A doctor without medical equipment or medication can’t do anything but make a diagnosis if that.
Everyone makes a valid point! I’m a PA and even if I’m able to diagnose the medical condition, I’ll be very limited on treatment as I’ll need the medical equipments and meds for proper treatment in majority of cases. I think the best medical tool in most emergencies is CPR!!
Yah , they must have medical equipment on each flight along with a doctor to operate them.
If not for the money they want to keep, airlines could put 3 qualified pilots on every flight.
Do not make they argument that it's too expensive - I'm telling you the investors are keeping the difference. They CAN afford it.

Tragic. And to think airlines are trying to lobby governments to cut back requirements and costs in the hopes of requiring just a single pilot instead of having the 2 required pilots in the cockpit.

There’s been quite a few pilots die either on the plane or in airports in the last 3 years. These also been a few that survived as they had the cardiac arrest shortly on landing or were just lucky. Apparently some airlines have adjusted ( lowered) their health standards for pilots to accommodate the many who have suffered heart complaints, also in the last 3 years
Another Turkish passenger did pass away mid air on 15th November, from instubul to Chicago, we were just 3hrs away to O"hare international, was so scary

It should not be scary, at least for you as a passenger. They do not put just two pilots for long haul flights. There are at least 3 pilots in there, so that they can rest and fly the plane in turns. RIP for the pilot tho🥲 so sad…

If you think about it, it should not be such a rare event, given that pilots spend most of their lives inside of airplanes. And they don't exercise and are sitting all day long.
They don't fly THAT much. A pilot who compiles 1,000 hours a year is unusually busy.
@roberthudson1959 exactly, some pilots only work hald a year in terms of ours and the rest is vacation

It was curious that the Turkish airlines jet was flying the shorter polar route over Canada to Istanbul and didn’t divert to a Canadian airport and flew south from Canadian airspace bypassing closer Canadian airports back into the US.
I think they decided that because pilot was already dead and THY has a hub in JFK so that would be able to divert passengers to a different plane easily.
@@berkekadircelik6282 Even if the captain died, they wasted more fuel crossing Canada to get back into the US, unless aviation fuel is cheaper in the US.
@@reecom9884 it would be harder to divert the passengers as I said. They probably have no extra planes stationed in those airports close by so they would have to fly another plane from one of their hubs which would cost much much more, than just flying to JFK which has a THY hub and quickly diverting passengers

1 too heavy to land 2 some passengers might not have visa entering Canada, better to land at the same country 3 more international flights to Europe departing from JFK so passengers can reroute to different airlines to Europe and transfer onto their own planes. 4 less resources in Canada for stranded passengers in term of ground crews
