Synopsis: Jeanne du Barry follows Jeanne Vaubernier (Maïwenn), a working-class woman determined to climb the social ladder, using her charms to escape her impoverished life. Her lover, the Comte du Barry (Melvil Poupaud), wishes to present her to King Louis XV (Johnny Depp) and orchestrates a meeting through the influential Duke of Richelieu (Pierre Richard). The encounter goes far beyond his expectations for it was love at first sight for the King and Jeanne. Through this ravishing courtesan, the king rediscovers his appetite for life and feels he can no longer live without her. Making Jeanne his last official mistress, scandal erupts as no one at Court will accept a girl from the streets into their rarified world.

The real Madame du Barry was a beautiful blonde and met Louis the XV when she was 25. Weird casting for Maiwenn to play her, for sure. But Johnny Depp will be a pleasure to watch.
Maiwenn was the director, so it was actually her cosplaying as duBarry.
Johnny Depp was very convincing as Louis. His final scene reminded me of when he played The Libertine (another great movie). Beautifully done.

I bet it was good ! Depp has been around French language for so long with his kids having a French mother that this movie would come natural to him even though he's American born! He's perfect for this part! Bet his kids are proud of him! 👍✌️

I want to see the movie last night in the United States. The movie captured by Maiween a deep beautiful eloquence of emotion between herself and Johnny Depp who played the supporting role as king. I could have not imagined any other climbing into that role after Johnny's outstanding performance with his demeanor, facial expression, body language and commanding the room of as the king. The chemistry between the two was beautiful. The supporting cast is outstanding. Do not let subtitles from seeing it on the big screen. I say bravo! JD you do not need Hollywood my dear, you are Hollywood you are the greatest character actor globally and you are and always will be the one and only Johnny Depp. Maiween, good for you to press on and have none other than JD performance as the supporting role. BRAVO

Saw this film twice in the US: it is a work of art! Beautifully done! All involved in the making of this film should be proud of the end result. Johnny and Maiwenn's onscreen chemistry is believable. ❤

I completely enjoyed everything about this magnificent period piece about the love story between King Louis XV and Countess Jeane Du Barry. Maii'wen gave us truth from the scripting to the costumes, shots, sequence, sets and acting.
Johnny has given us another masterful personality that is unique from any other character before. His stares were exceptional. His comman of French was mesmerizing.
All the supporting cast were excellent. I just wish we could have seen more from the Kings Youngest Daughter who was a pure Christian soul. Her statement about Zamour left me thankful that she was unyielding in her commitment to Christ.
Thank you for capturing this moment in history and telling their story. I cried when she small stepped backwards. I pray our Lord will allow them a reunion in his Kingdom.

It is in limited release globally ~ based on what region you live in.
This will be challenging for the USA, their knowledge of the USA history is lacking and almost zero on Europe, and it is in French and many today in the USA will have a hard time keeping up. The type will not wait for you. I feel like this was made for Europe in mind and let the rest eat cake- Hope I can see it.
I had similar thoughts. Made for Europe & Canada where French language is common & there will be a big box office. Most US audiences have no appetite for subtitled movies unfortunately. However ~ after seeing "Chavalier" ... I now have an interest in this period in French history. If you remember nothing - just remember the timeframe of the French Revolution and that is a great reference point in watching movies set in France. The stiffling atmosphere among royalty that is shown is really sad...makes me think of the current situation that Prince Harry has experienced. The royals are so full of themselves and in reality have such sad lives. That is the beauty of Maiwynn's character. She was like a breath of fresh air for the King. She taught him about the freedoms of authenticity, joy, true passion, & real love ...something in this world ... no matter how much money & power you have ...

Another great French movie I once watched with subtitles is Queen Margot (I think). It's about Marguerite D'Medici, the St Bartholomew Massacre, and the events following her marriage to Henri Navarre, a Protestant.
I wanted to see the movie in the theater. I live in a large city in the US and it only showed at the theater for a week or less. I ended up having to rent it on demand at home.

@Johnnydepp08544 USA Cedar Rapids Iowa. They showed 5 times. The cheapest tickets in the whole state was above $14. I can see the new planet of the ape movie for $7.50 and $5.00 in nonprofit rural theaters. Your distributer will not allow is.

It was what Maiwenn had dreamed of directing and acting in for many years. I think she did very well. Yes, we all know, especially if you studied French history at school as I did (South Africa) Jeanne du Barry was a blonde porcelain doll, but Maiwenn had her own vision of this drama. Her script was BASED on the life of du Barry at the court of King Louis XV, but she added her own ideas to bring this to life. Many, many people love her Jeanne du Barry.
She directed and produced the film...You want a different actress...FINANCE IT.
French humor is also world famous, Moliere's plays to Jacques tatti:) but that is true of us entire human groups of the world. humor music dance languages and rapid evolvement of brain minds at the same time within different groups of races nations who till that time were not connected by modern machines tech.. now it's up to us to think and see world in real light together as ONE and make sound social civil systems with changes which work for all, in entire world.
At least it doesn't say Academy Award Winner xD
I was very annoyed when this film cut off at the king's death. As always, the monarchs are the main character of the story and I am tricked into watching/reading another story about a powerful man. Du Barry had an interesting life of her own as did her slave Zamor. France you should know better.

Watched this film and as a writer I thought the script could have been better.
Too much telling at the start.
Narration went on for ages.
It must have been really hard for the actors to play the characters. It was quite two dimensional.
There was no build up, or any stakes.
The actual story of Madame Du Barry was more interesting than the film showed.
They had lovely filming and lavish sets and fantastic costumes.
I'm pleased the film did well, but that's maybe because Johnny Depp was playing the King.
I don't want to read sub titles...

The main problem with this movie is the 45 yr old director casting herself as the 22 year old mistress.

This movie is only good for its costumes and cinematography.
Maiwenn is clearly a man and not believable. There is zero chemistry between him and Depp. ZERO.
Even Depp was not that great. Just not believable. And his over the top displays of affection for maiwenn at all of the press junkets was nauseating.
I’m sorry but maiwenn is not a likable character. He just doesn’t have it in any way shape or form.
But the costumes and scenery were on point.
However, I want my money back.
Sadly the French will never overcome their frilly, makeup laden past.
