Hey man Really nicely explained & really glad I tuned into your video as I’m struggling always to get star burst & it wasn’t happening exactly as you showed But now after your video I actually nailed it! So thank you 🙏
Wow you made that look easy! I’m wondering though, how do you get that decent exposure of the cactus? I tried it today and my subject was totally underexposed. And I tried it with my 3 different metering modes :(
Thanks man, lol. So, typically in bright light like that, if you try for the sun star and let the camera meter, the subject will usually be underexposed, and that's because your camera is metering for the whole scene, not your subject. So you'll usually want to over-expose to compensate. What I usually do is over-expose by up to a full stop, because I know I can pull a full stop back in post without having blown out highlights. In addition to that, I will still usually bring the shadows up a bit in post as well. This will usually balance the image out and make for a more natural looking HDR type of shot. You just have to play with it in each scenario to gauge the light and see how much you can get a away with in overexposing to get your subject closer to a good exposure. If you;re shooting in manual, then just change either your shutter speed or your iso. If you're shooting in aperture priority, or you have it in manual, but with iso set to auto, then you can set the exposure compensation where you want it, probable up to a full stop. You could also use spot metering, but I never do, mostly because I'll probably forget I changed it and ruin the images on the next photo shoot, lol.
Brent Hall great response Brent, thank you. Of course, you’re right, I should be exposing for the subject which means I need to make sure my exposure meter shows an overexposure. D’oh! Many thanks for getting back to me so fast 👍👍
i am going to try this tomorrow at sunset. I hope I nailed it too. Thanks !!!!
When I get that notification for Brent Halls videos. I stop and watch! 👊🏼
Lolz. I'm pretty sure you know how to make a sun star already... :P But I did manage to sneak a couple drone shots in there.
Brent Hall I come for the tutorial but stay for the drone shots! 😂
...And that's how I hook'em! lol
This is great! I live in Colorado and often I'm out with too much sun.
This is great 🌞 thank you for tutorial sir, i watched it twice 🤣🤣
Can you do a video and settings fir Astro photography? Thank you
Hi, thanks for your easy to follow video. It was reaaly helpful.
You bet Jacqui, I'm glad I could help!😀
Excellent vid. I was wondering why my f/22 shot had great sun star but the image quality was lacking. I will try f/16 next time. Thanks!
You bet man. Yeah, diffraction can really do a number on image quality!
Great video Mate
Many thanks!
Thanks dude!! I can’t wait to try it.
You bet man, thanks for watching!
Another great tutorial, I watch this at the cusp of a 10-18" Nor'Easter LOL NO SUN! lol
Thank Jim! That definitely sucks about the weather. I haven't seen clouds in a while...so you can live vicariously through me, lol.
Brilliant.
Thank you , something we have in Muscat - Oman ....SUN and very hot weather
Can you please help me by telling the ISO and other camera settings for such photograph?
Wow! I thought it was a filter doing that! How do you know how many “blades” are in the lense?
Nope, no filter, it's all in the lens. You can look up the number of blades with all the other lens info on most websites.
@@BrentHall …thank you! That’s easy to do
I have a Canon SX60HS but it does not drop down any lower than F8🙁 I love this video- thanks!!
That's weird, but f8 should still start to give a little bit of the effect. Thanks for watching though! 😀🙏

LOL, yeah I joke about it on camera, but I definitely don't take it for granted!

Sure thing man, good luck with it!
Great tutorial
Many thanks!
@@BrentHall though I tried today with my canon 50 mm 1.8 but even with the aperture 22 I didn't get that sun star effect 😓
Hey Bro, Is Tripod needed to shoot this Effect?
Nope.
Thanks.
You're welcome, thanks for watching!
I've a Nikon D5200 how will I take a photo like this using this camera
Yes you can the camera body doesn't matter for this, the lens is what does it.
@@BrentHall what lens shall I use for this kind of photography for my Nikon D5200 please let me know. Please 🙏🏻
Just use whatever you have and set the aperture to around f16.
@@BrentHall Thank you I'll try and get back to you. You've been amazing man thank you mate. Have a great 2021.
What is the iso and aptr for this pic
Don't remember, though I'm pretty sure I said it in the video. Probably f/16 and a lower ISO.
F16
Sutter Speed 250
ISO 800
Came for the candy, got something better!
In hindsight, I should have bought a pack of star bursts for the intro...
Haha now that's an idea!
Can we make a sun burst with mobile phones?
Not like that.
Metering? Where are you aiming? Focus point??
Focus point was on the cactus.
What's the song name??
I don't remember, but I get all my music from epidemic sound.
