I just bought this pack at rei for $209. The best part is that it fits like a traditional pack. The padding in the hip belt is really great.
I saw it was on sale for the anniversary sale! What a great deal. This is such an amazing pack. I agree on the hip belt, it’s so comfortable
I have one of the first REI flash packs and every year they get better and better. Nice review!
I originally bought one back in 2016 and really liked it. This pack is so amazing. Glad you liked the review.
I have their Flash 55 and it's a great backpack.
My buddy has that pack and I really like it!
Pack really looks great! Thanks for the review, Sir.
It's a super nice pack! Glad you liked the review
I have had a flash 18 for over a decade and have a lot of respect for REI pack construction and material.
REI makes such great products! Over a decade is a huge win!
I’m not much of a hiker but I camp a lot! Taking some longer trips and just picked up this pack to try it out. Hope it serves me well thanks for your video brother. 🙏🏽
Stoked you got it. Would love to hear where you're planning on going.
For the water bottle holder - it's easier when the bottle actually has weight - as in, water in it. I tried this pack out cuz my buddy had it and he was using his Gossamer Gear. It was fantastic for a 3 night 4 day trip. cheers
So true! So much easier to pull out when the water bottle is full. I've decided that I'll be bringing this pack on the JMT with me in two months. Really looking forward to spending two weeks with it
Nice video man!! Good stuff Neal 👏
Thanks for watching. It’s such a nice pack
I was conflicted but this is really nice good job REI
Just one question how is the back cooling? Does it get sweaty?
They did a great job on this one! My experience is that every backpack will make your back sweaty. I'm not a hugely sweaty guy but when you're carrying 20-25 pounds and walking 15 miles a day, that is going to lead to sweat.
I tried on a Flash 50 yesterday at REI. I'm waiting for the anniversary sale to decide.
Of all the packs I own, I think this is the most comfortable. I really like the hip belt! I think that's a smart idea. My guess is it will be on sale during May.
Neal, where is the link for the camp shoes? Couldn’t find it. Otherwise, great vid review of the Flash Air 50!
Thank you! My bad on the link for camp shoes. They are on a huge discount today- amzn.to/3VPP6zY
Nice video Neal, you really packed it. Seems like you can pack way more than weight limit?
I would think so. I think k you can go to 30lbs for sure. I’m impressed with how comfortable it is.
@@NealBenson
i have one coming.. the dude at rei when i was trying it on was bent on selling me a different pack.. and claiming it will not carry over 20lbs.
i’m not sure why he was against this pack? 🤦🏻♂️
He didn’t even have any feed back on it yet 😆
It felt great on.. like it wasn’t there.. almost felt like the flash 55.
I told him i will prove it can carry over 20lbs 😆
thanks for making the review
@@campbub That's wild! I think you could totally carry 30lbs with this pack. I'm planning on taking it on the JMT this summer. Glad you liked the review and hope you love the pack. I think you made the right call going with this over the Flash 55L
That mesh holder is actually a mod pack they call it to hold any straps,
Hip pockets, etc that you may remove.
Thank you!
. Is there a zipper to access the bottom of the pack? I usually like to put my tent in there for quick access.
It doesn’t. I like to put my tent in the outside pouch. It’s super easy to access!
Hi, im from south america, i was wondering if this backpack does have any rain cover or backpack cover ???... have a good one men, love the review.
Thank you for the encouragement! The pack doesn't come with a rain cover but you can buy a ducks back from REI: alnk.to/cHMBgT0. You can also get a trash bag and put it inside your bag. Hope that is helpful!
Only bad thing about this is that it doesnt carry over 25lbs well. The shoulder straps have a big gap, its kind of high on you. You might want to try a small.
That's what I was thinking. I normally hit around that weight so I'm gonna push it a little. The bear can doesn't help when hiking in the Sierra.
Can I ask, what is your torso length and what pack size did you get? Thanks.
Of course! My torso is 17.5 and I went with the medium. It fits me perfect! If you choose to buy the pack please consider using the link in the description to help out this channel. Happy to answer any other questions. Oh ya, I'm 5' 10"
Looks like a BV500 might fit horizontally up high inside.
I totally think it would. I didn't take much time to think about packing it but hindsight, I think you could put the BV in and then pack clothes around it
Btw, what the heck is that little Koozie thing?
I don't know! I was hoping someone would comment and let me know
Im in between this and the durston kakwa 55
I was looking at the Kakwa before buying this and glad I went this route. I like that at REI I can try it on and return it if I have any issues
You’re not wrong there!
@@nathankoenegstein3253 I've been a member with REI for like 20 years. I definitely have an affinity for their gear, customer service, and prices. If you can wait, check back at REI for the Memorial Day sale. This pack might go on sale. IDK
I contacted dan at durston and he said it be almost 40 dollars if i needed to return the pack if it doesnt fit 😮 so ill definitely be considering the flash 50 air!
I have both and both are great packs. For me, the Kakwa carries better hands down, especially with much heavier loads. The water bottle pockets on the Flash can’t be beat. My back doesn’t get AS sweaty with the Flash and the back of the pack stays dry: The Kakwa gets wet and retains water on the back of the pack after I take it off. I have a Bearikade Weekender that fits horizontally at the top of both packs, but is top heavy and uncomfortable in both in that orientation. They both feel much more comfortable with the Bearikade turned vertically. The shoulder straps are a little closer together than I would like on the Flash. I like the stretchy front pocket on the Kakwa better and can fit more in it (I like the front pocket on the Flash 55 WAY better). Pros and cons with both, but the fact that you can actually use the Flash and return it would make me wait for a sale and try the Flash first.
What is the denier of this fabric?
Camp shoes?
Several years ago I bought a pair water shoes and they are amazing! They are extremely light, easy to pack, and easy to use. Check them out here:

Thanks for doing this! I've been ogling this pack online for months but nobody is doing videos about it.
You're welcome! I saw the same thing. My hope that this is helpful for someone who is considering the pack. It's a solid pack. Totally worth it!
@@NealBensonI would be SUPER interested in a field test with weight in it. Especially if it's comfortable in the upper range of 25-30 lbs and I often have to carry heavier loads when I go with my old dog and my slightly old Mom lol.
@@landmarkleather That's a great idea! Let me see what I can do. I like carrying a little bit of a larger pack because I'm usually helping my kids with some gear.
Come on man, this is not a "full review"
More like an unboxing or first look.
Sorry it wasn't more helpful. Haven't been able to take it on the trail yet
