  • It has been fun to watch the evolution of the Flash series of backpacks from REI. 10 years ago I used a Flash backpack (60 or 65L?) or a summer of fun backpacking trips. That pack was over 4lb (which was light at the time). The new REI Flash Air 50L Backpack is under 2lbs!
In this video I go over how I used it and what I think about it. It will be seeing some fun trips this summer too :)

Thanks for the great video. I have been considering this pack, after seeing it in my local REI. The thing that kept me from getting it right then is that it isn’t waterproof. Did you have any issues with that? I do have a waterproof pack cover, if it will fit, but a soggy backpack is no fun.

Thanks!! Some people use a trash bag as a liner inside the backpack. Just an idea.

Would you recommend the pack on long-term trips?

Have you tried strapping bear canister on the top with Y strap? I usually don't carry canister here along At but my next trip in mid west will require it and I'm not certain how this will hold it securely.

Hello! Great question. I have not tried a bear canister on top. Sorry I could not help on that. Have fun in your upcoming adventure!

I believe that people pay way too much attention to the weight of the pack. With a moderate sized tent and food for a 4 plus day trip, you are talking about somewhere around 30 lbs of gear. If a pack is too light, one faces the prospect of being able to carry that weight comfortably. A pack that is heavier, may carry that load with comfort despite adding to the overall weight.

Hopefully no one is carrying 30 lbs for a 4 day trip. It's 6-8 lbs of food, so that would mean a base weight of 22-24 lbs - that is crazy heavy. Those kinds of weight make backpacking of any distance not very fun. If you are just walking in a ways and staying in one place, by all accounts, load up and have at it.

You are SO RIGHT my friend. I opt for a heavier and more robust pack (and proper gear!) 99% of the time. I dont mind carrying a few extra lbs if it means I have everything I (and those around me) need. Mystery Ranch and Gregory make great packs that accomplish this and carry weight very well. Take care!
