I n culinary school they teach u to always allow knives if falling to fall completely to the floor and stop moving before picking them up. Never try to catch them. This is one of those things chefs still do thought and sometimes I still do😂
My bf does this all the time, just the other day he nearly caught a knife he dropped in the kitchen, and the look on his face when he managed to pull his foot back before it hit was hilarious.
Like yes... But I talked to a podiatrist buddy of mine about this and he said it's super easy to break your foot and the complications can be long lasting. Probably better to let the tool take the fall not your foot.
Rather it take a soft hit against my shoes than a hard hit against the ground if im dropping it accidentally. If intentional id rather just drop and kick it knowing it wont be damaged than bend down
The real skill is having quick enough judgement to know whether you should or not. Solid things, don't care about the floor, let it fall. Inside floors or breakable tools, catch them. But at close to 10m/s/s you don't have a lot of time to think. And wear work boots.

As a tool and die maker, that's a bad habit to get in to. You might think it's handy until you drop a huge piece of steel and break your foot. It's not worth it, those tools are designed to be able to withstand the fall, just let them fall
My tradesman did this once. He opened his toolbox and heard something fall, then he stuck his foot out to break the fall and what fell turned out to be a vac pump that proceeded to fall and land on his shin.
