    Thank you for the demo! I want to put a new Evans Calftone head on my 20" bass drum on the reso side, but I'm not a big fan of manufacturer logos. It seems manufacturers tend to put their mark so close to the edge that it makes cutting it out a bit risky. I think your system will help with that! I do want that look, but also want the sound of an EMAD reso head.Thinking about putting some adhesive insulation in a circle, copying the the EMAD muffling pattern. How do you think that would sound? Standard EMAD on the batter side. Thanks!

      If you use the Bass Drum O’s hole cutter, and matching sized Bass Drum O it should be all you need. Both pieces of the “O”have an adhesive backing that will act like that foam, and keep it rattle free. PLEASE WATCH how install this to make it lock in. You have to be patient, gentle, but persistent with the locking ring. Otherwise you run the risk of slipping, and tearing the head. Thank you for watching, and commenting. LOL So true. I've ripped a few in my day. This system is actually quite effective. Especially the cutter. You don't "have to" put on the ring, but it does protect the edge of the porthole. It also adds a touch of mass which adds heft to the drums tone. In the end with this system it's a matter of having patience, and moving slowly, but deliberately. Thank you for the kind words, and for watching. As always please like, share, and subscribe. 🙌🙌🙌

    I went with a 6" port dead center. I've got an Aqaurian SK1 with an Evans EQ pad. I am not sure if I will keep the EQ pad or roll a towel instead. I probably won't use this kit for anything more than rehearsals but even still, i hope the 6" port doesn't cause me to lose bottom end. It's a cool little kit for sure.

    Thanks for providing this video mate. I just bought a nice silver one to cover up the edges where I pulled out a thick sheet from the bass drum hole and frayed it. I'm hoping the ripple on the skin won't make it difficult to install. Also I noticed that I already have some reinforcement material on the inner edge of the skin. Will I have to remove this ring before installing?.. it's probably only a 1mm thick. I'm thinking I'll wait till lockdown is over and get the shop to do it. But I'm impatient. :). Cheers. Chris from Australia.

    I have the same drum kit and was stumped on how I could make a hole in the bass drum (currently, the whole front end of the bass drum is OFF, so I can put a mic in there, but it sounds like crap, so I'm VERY glad I found this video!
    Is it possible to put a link the devices you used for everything? I'm starting from scratch and don't know what any of those items are called, so I can search for them and buy it, and then follow your steps :)

    I've found that after a time those plastic locking rings start to rattle with the usual punishment of hard-kicking vibration. So, when I bought a new head I thought I would defy their manufacturing standard and Epoxy on that plastic ring. That lasted quite a bit longer until my kicking punishment eventually took it's toll on the plastic ring again and it started rattling. Now I just cut the mike hole and leave off that plastic finishing ring. No question that it doesn't look as good but one less kit hassle.

    • @KennySharretts
      @KennySharretts  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      That can happen with these. In your case I’d use an Aquarian port ring. Adds a little muting, doesn’t rattle, makes cutting a hole easy, and keeps your port from tearing. Thank you so much for watching, and commenting.

    that porthole is 5" ? What is good porthole size to 16" bassdrum?

    • @KennySharretts
      @KennySharretts  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      It's a 4" Hole. A Drum Holz brand insert. For this kick that's as big as I would go. An SM 91 can slide right in, and a D112, SM52, or Audix D6 works great with this size hole.

      Hi Vinnie. Drum Holz makes a 2" port. Kickport has little snare/tom ports that would work great on a small kick. My question is what a tomport would do for a banjo? Hhmmmmnnn?😉

      +scottfenner42 BTW there is no mike in that bass drum. That's straight off of the cell phone. I do, however, seriously recommend a Kelly Shu for this bass drum. Although the Ported G1 gave me an incredible sound, and make it useable in any club, a Shure SM91 mounted on a Kelly Shu internal miking system will make that drum slay in any environment. Ported head, or unported head. I just got one of the Flatz models. Can't wait to install it. Check it out. www.kellyshu.com

    That's interesting. I had an early Breakbeats and a bass drum head would not fit the hoop. The collar was too wide. It required a 16" tom head for it to fit the hoop.

      This reply ended up in the wrong post so here you go

    • @KennySharretts
      @KennySharretts  7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yes I've heard that early versions tend to be a bit rough around the edges. I will say the Evans 16" Bass Drum Heads tend to do the trick, and will produce a much deeper sound than a tom head.

  • @themoaspecial
    @themoaspecial 9 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    I have a question regarding your resonant head. I believe you said that it was an Evans 16" G1 Coated is that right? If so, then is it just one that's designed for a floor tom that you have put on it or is it an actual G1 16" head specifically for bass drums?

    • @KennySharretts
      @KennySharretts  9 ปีที่แล้ว

      +Simon McDowell It is an Evans 16" Coated G1 specifically designed for Bass drums.Just as the E-Mad I put on the batter side. It has a proper bass drum collar, which is why A. I got excited, and dropped one on it. B. That breakbeats kick sounds deep. The collar TOTALLY makes a difference. A tom head will work - esque, but a proper bass drum collar is SOOOO much better.

    • @themoaspecial
      @themoaspecial 9 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Kenny Sharretts Yeah I'd rather get one with a bass drum collar since it is a bass drum at the end of the day. Okay so I'll try look for a G1 with a collar. I got an EMAD head the other day for it which is awesome and hopefully a G1 will make it better too. I'd have to get a port hole protector too. Would a 4" be a good size porthole? Yeah your bass drum sounds awesome! I actually was quite happy with it even with the stock heads and had been using them for a while. I still use the tom stock head and I actually like them so I'll keep using them until I really have to change them. But man the EMAD improves it sooo dramatically!

    • @KennySharretts
      @KennySharretts  9 ปีที่แล้ว

      +Simon McDowell On this drum a 4 " hole is definitely the way to go. Maximizes the amount of resonant space on this "tiny" bass drum head. The stock Ludwig front head with the dampening ring is awesome as well, I just didn't want to cut my logo head so I could have both options. Evans also makes an EQ3-P Smooth White with a bass drum collar, and Remo has a Powerstroke 3 with a bass drum collar if you wish to have a dampening ring.

    • @KennySharretts
      @KennySharretts  8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      LOL, I can understand. Just know using some kind of reinforcement ring really protects the head, gives you a better guide/template, and adds a useful bit of heft to lightly muffle the head. In addition it protects your head from a sound man's misplaced microphone :)

    Anyone try this? Was it hard?

    • @KennySharretts
      @KennySharretts  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      If you have the drum holz tool it's pretty darn easy. The challenging part is locking the counter ring in.The flathead screwdriver is essential. I recommend pre locking in one little curve of the ring before engaging the whole ring to the head. Once the adhesive sticks, it's difficult to reset it, but know that if you lock it well, these rings are killer. Protect your cutout, AND add a little muffling to the front head, which gives it more heft. Thank you for watching.

    • @ianmuessig
      @ianmuessig 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Cutting the hole is easy. Getting the two stupid plastic rings to lock together the absolutely most fucking absurdly frustrating thing I have ever done in my life (and I sold health insurance!) that resulted in both my head and the ring being destroyed and me being out $40 because neither company wanted to support their products.

    • @KennySharretts
      @KennySharretts  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Man that's a bummer it happened to you. The first time I did it years ago I had the same thing happen. That's why I made the video. To help people understand how to lock the ring with the one side in first method, and to not push too hard on the head to avoid tearing. I had one recently that I couldn't get it to lock so I just took it off instead of forcing it. Then the last two I did for customers went together like perfection. Again I'm sorry.

      A mighty foot you must have sir. Alas as the suburban child of a single school teacher mother, I was bereft of the surroundings that would have provided me the opportunity to wrastle bears or go ice fishing , but I did chop a lot of wood which taught me the value of an accurate cut. In addition I did have an awesome soon to be brother-in-law who sold me his 73 Monte Carlo with an old 305 where I learned basic auto repair, and hence the value of the right tool for the job. I bought it with money from my lawn service I had been operating since I was 11 which taught me the value of efficiency, and reinforced the lesson of using the right tool for the job. Furthermore I had a working cover band from 14 on so I played a lot of gigs and parties where I became aware of the common need for a hole in the front BD head. Also a time I learned the importance of a safety ring around the hole. Most importantly 1. I watched my strong, powerful Mother have the balls to tell the privileged douches she dated, and the fine young man dating her daughter to mentor her young hyper son through the experiences I listed . Now that took balls. 2. Learned from my mother how to deliver a lesson plan accurately. So if that’s women’s work then i’m bringing the corn casserole and some doilies and we gonna have a T party up in this house. Lololol no offense intended all in good fun. Much love. Thx for watching
