    This is great. Really useful advice beautifully presented with all the right detail and good camera work. Sometimes the music made it a bit difficult to concentrate on what you were saying but I really enjoyed it. What I am struggling to find out is how to find the right pump and electrics and how to put them together. Im planning a cascade and making my old pond bigger. No matter how many videos I watch. I am still confused. Do I need an all in one pump or separate bits? Do I need electric? When i get to the online store. Its page after page of pumps and I am stumped. Any advice on electrics or solar for fairly shallow cascade into a wild life pond would be very welcome. Thank you:)

    Thanks for this - well explained and done with character. Did you use a spillway box as the entry point? Not sure it's called that - might be waterfall box. Either way the black thing you attach your outlet hose to and it spills out the other end. About to commence my first cascade project and wondering if I need one. They seem a bit steep for a bit of plastic.

    • @CrystalClearAquatics
      @CrystalClearAquatics  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hi there! Thanks for your comment- in this instance I simply positioned the hose discretely through the rock wall at the top of the cascade (above the liner) and allowed the small depression/pool created right at the top to act as a header pool to slow the flow down slightly and create a more natural looking and sounding flow.
      Purpose built cascade feeders that you describe obviously work well, although as you say are rather expensive! A simple alternative is the use of a waterproof container (an old filter box/water storage tank) that is sunk into the ground behind the cascade and has a wide bore (3” plus) or two or more smaller bore outlets (dependant on your pumps flow rates) plumbed into into the side of the box (with a proper though tank connector) which discharge into the top of the cascade will also do the same job. As will a small ‘header/feeder’ pool incorporated into the design of the cascade, into which water is directed and from which this overflows into the main cascade. Use of any of these methods is for one reason and that is to slow the flow from the pump down and to create a more natural looking and sounding flow.
      Hope this helps!

      Ed

      @@CrystalClearAquatics thanks for that. I have an old filter box that might do the job. I'm just going to crack on with it now. It's time to act - I've watched enough waterfall "how to" videos! Although, as people say below, this is one of the best.

    Good video. Great information. Thanks. Do you think the client has too many fish in that size pond?

    • @CrystalClearAquatics
      @CrystalClearAquatics  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks for your kind words! Re stocking density; although the fish themselves are happy and despite their continued breeding-frequently fish will stop breeding once their numbers are so great that surrounding natural resources are depleted, indicating that in this pond they’ve not met that limit yet-I would personally recommend halving their numbers. Much better to maintain lower stocking levels in ponds, which ensures less demands are put on the filtration system and ultimately less maintenance is required to maintain a clean and clear pond. I have discussed reducing numbers with this client so I’m sure at some point this will happen! Thanks for your comment!

    Thank you. Your thoughts on angles at every waterfall? So rather than just a relatively straight line if it were to be like 90 degrees or so, how do you think it'd look?

    • @CrystalClearAquatics
      @CrystalClearAquatics  7 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Hey there! Usually when designing a series of falls I like to try and get some angles into each drop, creating a natural meander. Think about the main position you’ll be viewing and enjoying the falls from and try to position the spills so they can be seen almost head on from this angle to give the biggest impact. I have a play before I even start digging by laying the spill stones (the stones that will create the fall) onto the ground and positioning them at different angles to see how it might look, imagining the water flowing. Ultimately there are no rules-have fun!

    I’m having a right nightmare with my new pond installation and waterfall. It’s a rigid pond liner and when I tried to build a cascade at a slight slope down to the water. I built the cascade on a sand foundation but the cascade rocks are slowly sliding towards the pond and the weight of them is buckling the edge of the pond liner. I’ve rebuilt it once but I want this next rebuild to be the last. Should I remove the sand foundation and put down cement, bricks, or just soil. I see you have soil but I am concerned soil won’t be firm enough and the rocks will slide again. The cascade is approximately 1 x 0.5m.Great video by the way! 👍🏻

    • @CrystalClearAquatics
      @CrystalClearAquatics  3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Hi there! In this instance the cascade was built into an already pretty firm soil bank, so fixing them in place was a simple task, with the confidence that movement-if any-will be minimal. In your case if you were building on top of loose spoil-such as a bank of earth recently piled up from the excavation of your pond-then you’ll need to ensure the ground is well compacted before you begin to build upon it. I would certainly fix any base/foundation stones close to the pond edge with mortar, this will help prevent any of the higher rocks from sliding down and exerting forces on your pond shell. The rest of the cascade could be built dry stone, however I would always recommend fixing rockwork with either foam or mortar for a good job. Remember when building a cascade you want the fall of water to be WITHIN the earth bank and not on top. This will look more natural AND will provide some additional security helping to bed the rocks in properly and stop them moving.
      As for your pond shell disfiguring; pretty much every plastic preformed shell I’ve encountered (apart from fibreglass ones) tend to kink and crease at the edges unfortunately...
      Hope this helps!

    • @CrystalClearAquatics
      @CrystalClearAquatics  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi there- I definitely would try to avoid buying rocks from a garden centre- overpriced and generally all too uniform in size. Much better to go to a dedicated landscaping centre, a rock specialist or even better directly to a local quarry if you have one. Here you’ll find prices cheaper and more importantly a range of rock shape and size. As a last resort there are lots of online companies that will deliver ton loads of rock.

      HI there, thanks for watching and commenting! Distance between each fall is entirely up to you, but I would refrain from creating too large a drop (12” plus) unless you want a lot of noise (and splash) and are intent on creating Nigra falls!! A drop of only an inch or two between each stone is plenty to create a nice effect. I like to have a play- dry position stones, walk away and look form a distance to see how it looks, before finalising a height or position and setting the stone.

    So the original pond liner must be long enough to help start the waterfall?

    • @CrystalClearAquatics
      @CrystalClearAquatics  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hi there, sorry for the slow response!
      Ideally the original pond lining should have enough excess around the edge to extend a little way up the cascade, ensuring that the cascade section of pond liner then has a good sized overlap over the top of the pond lining. This isn’t always the case or possible though and as long as the cascade lining extends down into the pond below potential max pond water level this will ensure all water from the cascade flows back into the pond and isn’t lost between the folds/overlap of the two liners.
      Hope this makes sense!
