Great video and information. My older daughter and I enjoy watching your videos as they helps us understand what we are getting into and making sure we do things correctly. Thank You :)
Hello Matt. My Wife was walking through the room and heard your video. She actually sat and watched this video and enjoyed it. This video is exactly what you said it is. Just the information I was looking for. Researching away to explore expanding my little collection. Thank God you don't do clickbait . Love your channel
thanks for the in depth advice, on the the heating,of the racks. i looked all over youtube for this info, and your one of the few, that explains what equipment your using, and how to install it, along with proper temperatures.
Matt I’m buzzed up pretty good homie lol , 1:45am and I still find myself watching your videos , Love the info and stories of the start of Olympus , it’s awesome and appreciate the info woot woot , can’t wait to have my own stories to tell one day , if I make it that far ✌🏼, definitely enjoying the adventure
I built a rack for my females with 41 qts they have 6 pack for $45 shipped on Walmart. Expenses definitely were higher than I expected but it came out to be less than $300 and holds up to 10 bins and an 11th on top for any size bin with heat. I have a 11 inch flexiwatt tape on the far left side.
Nice to see different setups than your own. Personaly I heat more of the tub/tank but my snakeroom problably have a cooler ambient temprature. Keep the videos coming man. Great job!Regards from Sweden
Everything you said I've been thinking about & all are true. I plan on investing consistent better working equipment first before getting excited buying a snake. nice video, I also have a hanging rack system. and am very happy. and a ISTAT thermostat. profesional equipment certainly makes it a lot easier . i cant wait to see your next vid .
nick markham they are really nice as well (have them at the shop). at home I liked these other ones as I could do a piece at a time, and the different size tub ones still connect to the larger ones.
Because of your videos I started with my rodent production before I started with my snakes. I have one snake so my babies feed him but I haven't gotten the majority of my snakes for projects. We just had a litter of 8 :) 5 are girls and 3 boys so the girls are going back into the program and my boys will be feed off to my snake. You guys have really helped me figure out how I wanted to start this
when dealing with tight racks, I find that sanding away a little off the tubs makes a huge difference. usually it's just the 4 corners of the tubs that rubs against the rack. sand the open side of the tubs, not the bottom. use course sand paper first, then a fine sandpaper to polish it off.
that must be really tight. I had issue too with one rack in particular. I ended up taking apart the 6 tub rack and reassemble it making it a 5 tub rack. there was some waste in time and material but have the shelves more spaced out makes the hobby more enjoyable.
Old video I know, but just seeing it now. You mentioned that you don't think heating from the back is good for adults, can you tell me why it differs for adults vs. babies? Thanks in advance as always!
Off topic, can you do a customer pet owner type video? Questions I have regard: enclosure space requirements to size of snake ratio, and how the ratio may change with the addition of other snakes in the same enclosure. Also, what animals can go together. Or is having say, two balls in the same enclosure for extended periods(living together) a bad idea?
Hey Matt...i bought racks from c-serpents and i noticed on the 8 tub V-18 rack that in order for me to achieve 91-93 on the hot spot i have to crank my thermostat VE-100 to 106, which makes me very uncomfortable knowing that the thermostat is set to 106. The heat tape on my rack is kind of lower to the tub so the base of the tub is not on the heat tape but there is like 1 inch separation. I guess thats where the gap of temp is and why i have to set the thermostat to 106? Also, some shelves are a little cooler and some are a little hotter so its killing me. I see a lot of people talking about c-serpent racks and how great they are but i have my doubts.
Pablo de los rios I have no issue with c serpents at all. but what you are talking about is exactly why I elected to pressure fit my thermostat probe into my tub.
Very happy with all your videos! Just a quick question. Do you know of a good cleaner to clean your hands with while your touching all your snakes? I want to do that but I don't want to harm snakes
Ok so you are using multiple panels of heat tape. They seem to be run off same thermostat. How is that done and would the same process work for rhp's? As I wonder if the same process would work for stackable display style cages. I am an electrical dummy so more info on this subject and how all that works would be awesome
Hello, did you mist that coconut substrate in the TGR rack and how often do you change it out? I know you mentioned it holds humidity well, but want to make sure I'm maintaining it correctly... Thanks!
I only use one in each rack. But again, that big rack is not using a run of the mill heat cable. It is 400 W. I have to crank down the max wattage it can get to keep it from getting too hot.
On the thermostats what do you think about Ranco thermostats. I have about 4 of them and I am planing on getting some Herpstats 2 or herpstat 6 I believe. But what’s your thoughts on Ranco thermostats
I'm getting my first rack system tomorrow. It's just a three tier but it's got heat tape on the back. What do you recommend for a thermostat and so on. I'm new to this
You mention using vasoline for the tight fitting tubs. Have you considered sanding off the top edge of the tub just a little bit? That way it should slide nicely and you won't have to bother with vasoline getting everywhere. Just a suggestion, thanks for the video. :D
Great video on equipment and different ways to house ball pythons. I'm looking into getting my first ball python and have been searching for the best way/good equipment. I did take a look at tall grass reptiles. I see they have various size racks (ie for hatchlings, snakes 750-1500 grams, then adults 2500 grams plus). Is there any issue with housing say a 200 gram snake in the adult size rack? I want what's best for the snake but if I can put my money toward the adult rack right away it saves me $300 in the long run. Thank you for the advice as ir appears you have been breeding for awhile. I've even looked at glass cages at petsmart and they are running a few hundred dollars. Lastly with the rack system from tall grass where do you place your thermostat probe.
What other thermostats would you recommend? I’m in England and I can’t find herpstats anywhere. Is there anything that does a similar job? I’m just getting my set up now ready to have a snake
I know I am really late on this because the video was 4 years ago. I am getting ready to switch from enclosures to racks as my collection is growing quickly. How do I know how many thermostat probes/plugs I need for my rack? I am looking at a 8 tub rack and the herpstat 2.
@@OlympusReptiles awesome! Thank you for everything you do for this community! You are one of my most favorite breeders in the industry and I love learning from you!
I noticed you use opaque and solid colors tubs. Is there a particular reason? I'm trying to set up a rack myself and lighting is going to be a complication for me. Are there pros and cons to using one or the other? (Tub color)
Another great vid you are teaching me a lot and seriously appreciate every vid I’ve seen so far! I’m planning to buy a herpstat now haha but with that said how does the % system work? Or have you updated since then? Just curious if it’s easy. They were close to the same temp even though one was at 0% and the other was at 40% slightly confused 😅. Any info would be more than appreciated!
I still use them. the percent is how much power. often when it hits temp, it will drop to zero no to overheat. the one at 40 was probably heating just a bit. they work wonderful
Matt, I have been looking at the TGR rack system for a while now. I'm going to be purchasing my first BP and am not wanting a glass cage. My question to you is if I get a 6-9 month old BP in your professional opinion will it do okay in the 750-1500 rack size? Also where did u place ur thermostat probe on this rack system?
Jen K. I think that size would do fine. if it seems too big, add a few hides. I actually melted a small hole in a tub over the heat and pressure fitted my probe into it.
Matt, Thank you for the quick reply....I realize once they get close to 1500 grams ill need the next rack up which I believe is 1500-2500 grams, but I am tryin to stay away from the first rack size. Sounds good abt the probe. I assume u just placed it on 1 tub. To melt the hole I can use a sodering gun. What do u mean by pressure fit. Could that be something you show in a video at some point. Also it looks like TGR racks come fully assembled. Do you remember how long it too from order to receiving the rack? Sorry for all the questions. I appreciate the help
I have a question for ya. I have 2 ball pythons that chooses to move the bedding out from under their hide on the hot side and lay directly on the bottom of the tub. They are 28qt tubs with aspen shavings and my heat is 100watt heat rope that is underneath the tub like your setup. It's hooked to a thermostat that's set at 95 which produces hot spot of 90-92 in the tub. Any suggestions on how to stop the snake from doing this so I dont have to go crazy about them getting burnt?!!!
What temperature do you need your heat tape with the hanging wrap? I have mine at 111 keeping my tub 70 degree. So my snakes are not Warm enough. I don't feel right having it at 1:20 but that's where it needs to be. Can you tell me something to help me?
Could you use MDF for a rack system, I can get a custom made rack from work with our CNC machine, didn't know if it was harmful or not? And do you prefer the back heating or under heating method? Thanks!!! Amazing info and really getting me excited to start this hobby !! Best Herp Channel Period!!!
Jack Sherburn I have heard of it, but have 0 experience with it. I think it is a n.e.r.d. project, and that dude (Kevin mccurly) is way ahead of me in this industry lol.
When would you replace your heat tape? I have a snake rack and just bought a thermostat. But the heat tape still stays at the same temp even with the thermostat.
Angel Chavez I still like them a lot. only issue is the tub can pop out of track when opening or closing, but they have actually addressed that with a new rail system.
Hey. Question. I’m planing on doing my own plastic rack. If i put the heat tape will melt the plastic or something?? I watche some videos of ppl buying plastic racks at Walmart and cut it to the size so im try to do that
Hey great video, I'm new here. What's the reason you don't recommend back heat racks for adult snakes? I just bought a rack (28qt tubs) with back heat about a month ago and removed my 3 adult balls from fish tanks. They are doing great, shedding whole, and eating more frequently. I also have a Vivarium VE 100 thermostat, what's your thoughts good or bad?
Ok cool, thanks for the quick reply. I'll use this rack for now until I'm ready for another. I'm looking to try breeding for the first time this year with my female spider and male pastel, wish me luck...
VolvoEC45 either build or purchase. I like the ones Eric White is building (tallgrass Reptiles) as they come in every size tub you need, are stackable and connectable as you grow.
konightmare it depends on the herpstat, but each probe is set to control one plug in. so one probe per rack. that means it does only CK temperature in a single tub. that is why I mount a backup thermometer to have a separate check location. I also keep a digital temp gun to spot check as needed.
mclovin9151 not really. a few of mine still like one, but most don't care. especially if the tub is dark or opaque. basically the entire environment becomes a big dark hide.
Nice video Matt ! Just out of curiosity, what size tub do you recommend for each... hatching, juvenile ( I call 200grams to about 450-500grams a juvenile, so sure if I'm correct on that size) & sub-adult (500 grams to 1,000) ? Since we already know you use a Sterilite 41 quart tub for adult females. Also when do you switch a hatching to a bigger tub... at how many grams are they big enough to go up to the next size tub ?
Sergio McDole a lot of it is mostly the eyeball test as much as weight. I use 6qt for hatchling, then about 17 qt (or anything close to it) for the next size up. I usually keep em in the tub until it is obviously too small. they like tight spaces (simulates termite mounds they take over). so for me, I go 6 qt, 15 to 17 qt, 28 to 32 qt, then up to 41 qt or cb 70 tubs.
Can you power two sets of those hanging racks with one of the herpstat thermostats ? I know they have a certain max wattage but just wondering about an example how many racks that would amount too that it could heat safely
Another gr8 video, I recently bought a rack system and I think my snake likes it better than aquariam. Last night was the first time I fed her in the rack and she wasted no time and her tail was wagging 😂
sheldon cooper dude!! I know!! I saw this rattle snake and he was wagging his rattle and I thought he was excited to see me so he "kissed me" I died the next day LOL
hey how good are you at genetics in ball pythons. I got a female that nobody knows what she is. this picture next to my comment is a very small picture of her. guy was getting out of the "business" and said 25 bucks I can have her, since then I've been pulling my hair out trying to gene her. if you want can send better pics.
Im new to this, never owned a snake in my life but started watching your channel and are interested in starting something like this. My question is, the new tubs you have are not see through. Is it healthy to put snakes in a total dark environment like that? Plus wouldnt it help you more if it was see through? So before opening the tub you can see whats going on in there? I also watch Brians channel, the guy who you use for your snake bedding and he too uses tubs. The snakes are in a little area every day, does that affect them at all? Are they used to being in one place and not move much? Im not trying to be some animal activist here, just if anyone can answer these questions, just dont want to start something that may not be ok for the snakes.
Sillysoft I’m new as well, but I hope I can shed a some light on your questions. Snakes, and most reptiles, need to see light and darkness. They have an internal clock based on the day and night cycle. To have clear tubs might be useful so you can give them a day and night cycle. The size depends on the type of reptile. Tons of room is ideal, but most reptile owners/breeders don’t have room for that. With ball pythons they are comfortable in confined spaces. If you have a living space for them that’s too big they might be stressed and won’t eat until they’re placed in something smaller. They also like spaces that they can squeeze in and hide. I hope that helps a bit.
What do you do to keep your tubs from "running over" the probe wire? I just got a tgr rack and every now and then the cord gets caught in between the heat tape and tub
We haven't really had that. We mount in the tub and run the wire to the back. If needed can tape the wire to the side/back of tub to keep it out of that position
Great advice!! Especially on warning people about heat tape malfunctions, not enough people are telling people about that.
Keep up the great work!
Pythons Unlimited thanks man! it can be horrible for sure.

watch our rack setup video to see how we set up to maintain a perfcet 90. my thermostat is set to.....90. It is all in probe placement.
great video
Just a thought man, why not run a wood plinth along the tops of your tubs in the tight rack? Will take a mil or two off of the top of them?
Kenneth McKenna plinth? (I am not familiar with the tool, not a carpenter lol). I have thought about lightly sanding the shelves, see if that helps.
It is a hand held metal tool for shaving down wood.
Crap my bad I meant a wood plane.
Kenneth McKenna lol, that makes more sense. now I know what we are talking about
what site should I buy a snake rack? I was thinking c cerpents or herpstatic reptiles 🤔
Jessica Creager c serpents is good. I don't know anything about herptastic. check out tgr (tall grass racks) on Facebook. tell Eric I sent ya.
Thank you I sure will :)
Dave Bruzdzinski I like underneath the best. I don't know anything about the material you are talking about though.
Where can I find tubs like the ones you have, but that have lids?
Nicole Draws which tubs? most of mine come from Target/Walmart. the ones in the tall grass racks are made by freedom breeders
What brand of roof de-icing cable are you using? I have looked on Amazon for a 400W heating cable and can't find one. TY:)
Does the tgr rack system have any troubles with heating due to the suspension?
Repty Lyfe I haven't had any
What’s your humidity in your snake racks .?
Honestly, I eyeball it anymore and adjust as needed. It ranges between about 40 and 60 typically.
quick question does you know anything about the fader gene
BTW Matt great vids keep it up .
Jack Sherburn I have heard of it, but have 0 experience with it. I think it is a n.e.r.d. project, and that dude (Kevin mccurly) is way ahead of me in this industry lol.
Do you have a website where you sell your snakes ?
Do you use reptile calcium for the snakes food? I always wanted a good protein or calcium for my snakes.
I want to buy a Python but my apartment gets up to 89 f in the summer even at night. Is that ok? Do they need the lower nighttime temps? Thanks
What is the best kind of substrate to use???
my fav is reptile prime
So useful!
What size tub is that the rack
Can solid black plastic (no light is allowed through at all) tubs be used in a ball python rack?
budyjames77 wouldn't see why not. I have solid gray, with no transparency. the mounds they take over in Africa would be dark inside.
When would you replace your heat tape? I have a snake rack and just bought a thermostat. But the heat tape still stays at the same temp even with the thermostat.
If it can't keep up
hey man the old rack on the right ( our perspective ) is it malamine ? im worried the malamine rack ive build aint gonna do wel with humidity ...?
wesley221090 it is. it seems to have held up well.
How do you like the tallgrass racks now that you'v had them a while?
Angel Chavez I still like them a lot. only issue is the tub can pop out of track when opening or closing, but they have actually addressed that with a new rail system.
lol I just ordered a fb70 and a fb 40 system :)
Angel Chavez awesome! let me know how you like it!
Hey. Question. I’m planing on doing my own plastic rack. If i put the heat tape will melt the plastic or something?? I watche some videos of ppl buying plastic racks at Walmart and cut it to the size so im try to do that
If you use a good thermostat shouldn't be an issue
Hey great video, I'm new here. What's the reason you don't recommend back heat racks for adult snakes? I just bought a rack (28qt tubs) with back heat about a month ago and removed my 3 adult balls from fish tanks. They are doing great, shedding whole, and eating more frequently. I also have a Vivarium VE 100 thermostat, what's your thoughts good or bad?
Darren Hollins vivarium is good, I just prefer belly heat, as it is what they are laying on.
Ok cool, thanks for the quick reply. I'll use this rack for now until I'm ready for another. I'm looking to try breeding for the first time this year with my female spider and male pastel, wish me luck...
When I do buy the herpestat for my snake rack will all the stuff that need to set it up come with it or will I have o buy any extra stuff to set up?
Everything comes with it.
do you have any idea for a smaller rack?
VolvoEC45 either build or purchase. I like the ones Eric White is building (tallgrass Reptiles) as they come in every size tub you need, are stackable and connectable as you grow.
11:06 where did you get this rack?
Does herpstat have more then one probe? How does it register heat in all the tanks?
konightmare it depends on the herpstat, but each probe is set to control one plug in. so one probe per rack. that means it does only CK temperature in a single tub. that is why I mount a backup thermometer to have a separate check location. I also keep a digital temp gun to spot check as needed.
Olympus Reptiles so what do I need to monitor mutli tanks humidity and Temp. Is there a good brand or certain thing I should look for?
konightmare herpstat can do up to 4 (herpstat 4). that is the most I am aware of.
Olympus Reptiles so the "Tall Grass" rack has one probe for each tub or just one probe for the whole rack?
konightmare just one for the whole rack, it is placed in the middle tub. keeping all within a degree or so.
So with a rack system the snakes don't need hides?
mclovin9151 not really. a few of mine still like one, but most don't care. especially if the tub is dark or opaque. basically the entire environment becomes a big dark hide.
2 no prob
Another gr8 video, I recently bought a rack system and I think my snake likes it better than aquariam. Last night was the first time I fed her in the rack and she wasted no time and her tail was wagging 😂
sheldon cooper dude!! I know!! I saw this rattle snake and he was wagging his rattle and I thought he was excited to see me so he "kissed me" I died the next day LOL
Best video! I want to breed eventually so this video was incredibly helpful!
what do you think would be the best snake rack that is good for a ball python baby to adult
Tyler Lawrence hard to do baby to adult, as tubs are such a different size
OK thanks what do think is the best company for racks
Tyler Lawrence I really like my TGR racks. I also know the guts at brace exotics, they do good
Where did you get the hanging racks?
Aaron Gonzalez they were made by tallgrass Reptiles. you can look em up on Facebook, Eric White is a great guy to work with.
Olympus Reptiles thank you
on top of those hanging racks, is that a "Cobra Basket"???
it is. Just a little trinket my grandfather got me.
that's still pretty Kool!!
hey how good are you at genetics in ball pythons. I got a female that nobody knows what she is. this picture next to my comment is a very small picture of her. guy was getting out of the "business" and said 25 bucks I can have her, since then I've been pulling my hair out trying to gene her. if you want can send better pics.
Phillip Smith pretty decent, but won't give anything exact off a picture. Send one to my Facebook
Are those fb20 or fb40 tubs in the tgr racks?
those were the fb70. if you look at our newer videos, we show fb20, fb40, fb70. ck out reptile room updgrade for it.
Nice. I have some fb20s. Hard to tell size in video
one herpstat to run them all?
Depending on herpstat yes. I will run two racks (20 tubs) per probe typically
What do you do to keep your tubs from "running over" the probe wire? I just got a tgr rack and every now and then the cord gets caught in between the heat tape and tub
We haven't really had that. We mount in the tub and run the wire to the back. If needed can tape the wire to the side/back of tub to keep it out of that position
where you get you'r hanging rack?
Krystin Hernandez tallgrass reptiles
they don't need fans ? or anything for air flow
Robert Johnson nope, no fans needed in racks
I thought all that condensation was from to high of humidity. Mine says 94% and wet sides like that!
Can be. Humidity won't be an issue unless snake is laying in wet. Often when setting up a tub it spikes, then drops
Where can we buy your reptiles
ryan hortman our Facebook, but best bet is patreon. www.patreon.com/olympusreptiles
Just run a hand sander along the top of the tight racks and remove some material to make em slide better
do snakes need heat 24-7 or i can run it on a timer for 12 on 12 off ?
Gummy Bear I prefer to keep solid temps, but some have a night temp drop. Best practice can change with species as well
thank you :)
