    I absolutely love how you pulled from other FF titles throughout the video, because While Final Fantasy on its own is still a vast and expansive universe, it is still at its core "Final Fantasy", and much like with the series many other titles, what it means to *be* Final Fantasy VII really doesn't have one definitive answer, what to one may seem worthy of the title, to another could be a total betrayed of expectations

    One thing I was thinking of while playing Rebirth was that Barret took his shades off more often and it was usually during scenes when he was more emotionally open or trusting to the party in some instances. These are people he can trust. But when he does wear them it's either right before, during or after major fights or moments where he thinks he can't be emotionally vulnerable otherwise it puts the lives of everyone and his own, at risk. If I remember right, the only major fight he isn't wearing his shades is when he fights Dyne. He wants to help his best friend, he believes that the Dyne he knew was still there; he was willing to return Marlene, Barret's reason for living, back to him thinking that he would be the best father for her because he was her birth father and that idea could break him out of what he's become. He is willing to do anything and everything to get Dyne back only for him to watch him die again.
    Then Cloud, this sword for hire that he had no reason to trust in Remake and even in at that point in Rebirth, had a shaky relationship with, comes up to him with his gun arm. He knows that Barret is going through a lot and is at his weakest, but this gesture reminds him that there are people who care about him and there's a little girl he has to fight for and come home to.

    It's interesting that this game didn't resonate with you as much as the original, the two remake games have quickly climbed my favorite games ranking solely because of how much it expands aspects of the original you could have easily missed or flown through. Midgar became one of my favorite environments in all of gaming because of remake and how well it created that city and the daunting nature of it.

    • @DevilHunter1994
      @DevilHunter1994 16 วันที่ผ่านมา +11

      My thoughts exactly. I absolutely adore the original game's narrative, characters and themes, but after replaying it multiple times, I frequently found myself thinking, or saying things like:
      "Wow I love this part, but I really wish we had more time to explore it in detail," or "I wish this character had more time to shine", or "It would be really cool if we could learn more about how the lifestream works, and what death is actually like in this world."
      Basically, I wanted a full FFVII deep dive, going all in on exploring the game's themes, characters, and world. Some people don't find that idea of an FFVII deep dive particularly interesting, as they feel FFVII was near perfect exactly as it was, and feel that Square should just focus on doing something entirely new. That's totally fair, but while I loved what the OG gave us, I couldn't help wishing there was more. I never had any real hope of getting what I wanted though. New FFVII games and projects never really succeeded in capturing the magic of the OG again...Then Remake and Rebirth happened, and they were everything I ever wanted, and more. Several times while playing, I found myself wondering how these games could even be real. Sure, every now and again the games will do something that I don't absolutely love. Remake had that second visit to the sewers, and Rebirth had that solo Cait Sith section with the most awkward box throwing mechanic ever programed, but for the most part, they have retold one of my favorite stories, and fleshed out one of my favorite worlds in gaming so well, and to a higher degree than I ever thought possible. They knock it out of the park so often that the missteps feel insignificant to me, when weighed against everything the games did right. This project is honestly a real dream come true for me so far, and If they nail the finale, this will definitely go down as my favorite trilogy of all time.

      I think I enjoyed FFVII: Rebirth a little bit more than Remake. Which I honestly mostly hated.
      Rebirth did a better job expanding the FF7 mythos more than remake until the ending.

  • @ideal8499
    @ideal8499 14 วันที่ผ่านมา +5

    Personally I think the remake trilogy does what the original did almost three decades back It subverts what was expected and delivers something that was familiar but has its own identity at the same time and the debate whether that was good or not took place back then as it does now. Final Fantasy vii and Remake and Rebirth all have one thing a soul and that is something alot of games don’t have the fact all these games can make people feel a number of emotions speaks something about them. As a piece of art, they have something all art I think should strive to have that is making the person interacting with it think about and reflect on it. The remake trilogy carries the heavy burden of remaking probably the greatest game of all time and following its peers in having its own identity and imo I think It does that just fine.

  • @AnimatronicBadgerlord

    FF7 is more important to me than i can even put into words. It has had a major effect on my life, and i can't even go into too much detail without writing a thesis.
    I loved the remake a great deal, they nailed everything i wanted to see and added more. Even still, i was worried about rebirth, how it would feel, how they would handle Nanaki, my favorite character.
    After 90 hours of playtime to get through the normal mode, I honestly love this game even more. It's characters are perfect, and that's the part of the game i love the most.
    Rebirth hit me on an emotional level that as a guy in his late 30s, i wasnt expecting. It made me laugh, squeal, cheer, and cry. Oh boy did it make me cry... the game is charming as hell and yes the open world stuff does get a bit samey, i didn't mind because i was listening to amazing music, learning about the world and the characters in my party and just spending time in the game that helped shape my life.
    I love nanaki more now than i every did before, they gave him such interesting character and had so much fun with him. His antics on the ship live rent free in my head, and the date in the golden saucer with him had me elated.
    Hell, i love all the characters more now than i did before. I craved more even when i was done... i know a lot of people hate the ending but i think it can work, if, they stick the landing in part 3. Even still, I'm ok with what they want to do because i just want to be with these characters more.
    To me... FF7 is its characters. And if the remakes have some anything right, it's they nailed the cast of misfits perfectly.

You have, from the text of a single comment, divined that they did not, in fact actually experience what they claimed to experience, and only thought they did, which you, knowing nothing else about them except for half a dozen paragraphs, saw through, realising they were deluding themselves about the nature of their own subjective experience that you are, by definition, entirely unable to observe directly, and identifying precisely what they actually felt. tbh a lot of the issues you discuss with rebirth, they are things I have always felt with the original game - the depiction of the turks, the way the focus shifts from the horrors of shinra to that of sephiroth... yeah sephiroth is a result of shinra, but that always felt a bit muddled to me. granted, I only have seen a small portion of rebirth, so I can't speak more on the issue

    sucks pt 2 didnt meet your expectations but for me personally i cant wait for pt 3. this is a tough part of the trilogy because in the og all you do is go from town to town learning about the characters so the overarching plot is not as focused until after aeriths part. they had to fill in this game with more content to deliver the feeling of exploration like the og game did and i think they did a decent job. to me these towns also felt more alive and the relationship between characters is something im glad they took their time in showing in this game. for me it made me like the party as a whole a lot more then when i played the og a few yrs back. great video and i hope pt 3 delivers for you

    Hi, I played my first FF game a couple months ago because I’m currently in nursing school and my usual game catalog hasn’t been realistic for the schedule I currently have. As someone who’s main game for my life has been destiny 2 I’ve set out in exploring franchises and indies the last 2-3 years. I decided to boot up ff 16 over spring break because I saw how cool rebirth looked and wanted to delve in. 16 was on sale so I purchased it and have been infatuated with the series ever since. I got around 1/2 way done through spring break and played a chapter whenever I could throughout the rest of the semester and purchased both remake and rebirth saving it for the summer so I could properly dedicate the man hours towards taking down those games and that has been one of the best decisions I’ve ever made. Rebirth has been the only game ever to truly take over my head narratively outside of destiny. After I finished rebirth I spent countless hours telling my brother and friends theories I had and have watched a dumb amount of videos. I love the entirety of this video as well as all of your videos, it’s helped my broaden my horizons. Btw your grabbing and cutting of other ff games reminds me heavily of Jacob geller video about every Zelda being the darkest Zelda. 10/10 will watch again

    I'm a complete newcomer to Final Fantasy, and I bought FF7Remake because I thought a modern remake would be a perfect starting point. I really enjoyed the combat, the presentation and the characters, but it lost me with the metanarrative and the Whispers, which may as well have held up a big neon sign saying, "Come back after you've played FF7 if you want to understand and appreciate this!"

      With what could be called the most anticipated video game remake ever made, I think that playing the original would be the way to get the best experience possible playing the game.
      Personally I don’t think the meta narrative actually does hold back new players. It does its best to not spoil anything about the original other than what most people know about the game through cultural osmosis. And implies it will at points deviate, things that new players would not really notice and simply experience the narrative.

    Thank you so much for making this!! I really enjoyed the video and hope that there will be more like it. The structure reminded me of your video on Ocarina of Time, where you peeled apart the influence of that game on all of the different 3D Zeldas that came after it. It's exciting to see an argument that isn't just organized like some kind of consumer report on each of the different functional elements of a game. (And I especially liked the cuts you used to join the sections together, like the transition from FF13 back to Rebirth with that cutscene with Cloud and Sephiroth falling through space. 🙂) It also felt like one of the most convincing defenses of FF13 I think I've seen anywhere.
    The whole time I was watching, I kept thinking about Tim Roger's video where he tells that anecdote about the first Japanese fan standing in line for FFXII on launch day -- the only thing he wanted was an FF7 remake! For whatever reason, FF7 does just feel so essential to the identity of the franchise.

I've always struggled with a love-hate relationship with Nomura games post approx 2010, I love his worlds and his characters so much but I can't help but be critical of the game design choices. So really interested to hear your thoughts

    It's funny, I said and agreed with all the points made during the Comfort and Strife section. As a lifelong fan of ff7 these two parts of remake have been some of the greatest game enjoyment I've ever experienced. But every once and a while (Barret/dyne, cait sith betrayal, etc) I would go: man, I know this is just another universe interpretation but I really feel they took the gut punch out there versus the original timeline.
    It's like, why can't we be sad? Why aren't we allowed to really sit with the pain alongside the happy parts?
    And then the temple of the ancients trial happened, and I understood. At least, I feel like I came to interpret this differently. That scene caused me to tear up like nothing else, I sobbed for Aerith's part. We got to see all the pain, all the hurt, all the trauma our party was carrying around. And the reason they were carrying it, was because they were not allowed to stop and process it. There was no time. Gotta stop Shinra, gotta stop Sephiroth, gotta avoid capture, gotta rescue someone, escape prison, etc. They were never allowed more than single moment to breathe, and no time to grapple with the pain they were holding on to. But in the trial, they had no choice, they had to stop and look right at that pain if they needed to move on. And all of them were ready to give up, but not Aerith. She pushed them back up when they had fallen, even knowing the depth of her own pain, she still helped to keep everyone going.
    And then she dies. And no one is allowed to grieve again. Especially Cloud who poignantly still interacts with her like she is alive all the whole exhibiting his blank beginning of FF7 personality again. (And yeah maybe he can see her Lifestream self as he did with Zack in Advent Children, but I think the clearer message there is about his denial in his grief)
    All of this really contextualized the distractions the game puts forth and why the character would want to do them despite the stakes.
    And, just cause I feel like no one else I've watched has said this: I love all the side content for one reason: because it allows more time with the characters to see their relationships grow in organic ways. If it was just dialogue and cutscene-less check list hunting then yeah that would be boring. Rebirth made it anything but boring if you really enjoy spending time with the gang and seeing them grow.

      @radioactiveplaythroughs7068 3 วันที่ผ่านมา +1

      This is a really beautiful comment and hits the core of Rebirth better than I could express. I think the trials returning each character back to their painful moments is arguably more important than whether or not they nail particular sad story moments from the original (e.g Dynes death or Nanaki’s realisation)

    I feel like a HUGE thing that many people are not realizing about Rebirths end, is that we didn’t see the full thing, we see a confusing situation where Cloud thinks Aerith is alive, the party doesn’t, I think that the devs will deliver, and we definitely will be getting the truth. We can have opinions on each game of this eventual trilogy, but the full story will be given to us and then will be the best time to have super deep dives on the entire story. Not trying to say you shouldn’t have made this or anything (I’ve seen a vid or 2 of yours and like your style) but just a thing for others to think about
    It sucks that this game didn’t resonate with you, but it did for me and I’m so hype to see the end in a couple years!

    there was a point in the Scott Pilgrim TV show, upon reading other Bryan Lee O'Malley joints, where it felt less like a previous project, and more like his next project. The thing he did in Scott Pilgrim was just so specific and iconic, that it would be dishonest to revisit what made that world fun under a different IP. Nonetheless, it is the NEXT thing. It responds to the previous work as a writer in a different point in their life in a different time, and is so separate from the original work that it can (justly) play with the characters from the last two iterations like they're action figures. It may have sacrificed clarity in identity by staying with the same name, but it won people over.
    I haven't gotten too far into the remake, because it's the brand of JRPG that is very clear about its high level of investment and that scares my toddler-brain, but the more I see of FF7 remake, the more it feels like it's more like the next thing informed by the previous thing than something that wants to be subject to an exercise in translation.
    I just really hope it escapes that terminal velocity on the third part, and is able to sell what it's doing as well as Scott Pilgrim Takes Off.

    Sorry to hear Rebirth didn't hit with you as much as the OG, it's honestly probably the best time I've had playing a non MMO FF since OG 7. I've never seen these characters done better (and that's including the OG). Personally think what they've set up for Part 3 could be something that could legit surpass the original for me (and OG 7 is my favorite game of all time) if they stick the landing.

    So, two fold here. I think this was a great video and you covered a plethora of topics I have lots of conversations with myself about. Bravo!! I mean it. Secondly, I did the nebula thing in order to view your HiFi Rush video and support creators generally…however I do have a bone to pick. I agree whole heartedly that artists need to be given creative, and “some” financial freedom to do as they like with certain IPs. And while MS and XBox can be callus at times, I think you forget to acknowledge that this is still a business. HFR was not cheap to make with over 1400 credits to its name (not all devs obviously). While I believe it made money based on different outlets, it is unlikely we will ever know whether it made $1.00 in profits or $1MM. And there is a difference. While we should vilify clearly targeted retribution with layoffs, a company cutting costs is normal and sucky all at the same time. Game making, like many industries similar to it, is a brutal industry. No less brutal than the restaurant industry where %50 or more fail in the first two to three years depending on the metric. Also, side note, while they were laid off, they likely were given severance packages to ease the burden and excellent references to their next job, or they were reabsorbed elsewhere within the company or in another one of their studios. I have been a part of restructuring like that, and it sucks, but most companies are pretty fair about it unless you were actually screwing up in a terminal sort of way.

    This was a really well made video.
    While I agree at being slightly let down at the game mostly meeting the same beats as the original after the ending of the first hinting at a stealth sequel, calling it a simple nostalgia tread with "sidequests that don't matter" bugs me personally, those sidequests are a big reason why this cast is the best cast a FF game has had imo, outside of FF XIV, another game with a lot of hours to give you time with these characters and flesh them out.
    You do have a unique viewpoint tho, and I really do respect it. I'm sorry the game didn't quite hit for you as it did me, but hey, XIII didn't at all manage to make me care about any of its characters or story, and I'm someone who really, truly tries to get engaged with the stories and art I'm experiencing, but outside the good combat system (however many hours in when said combat actually opens up) I was left wanting really badly by how genuinely badly presented XIII's plot and characters feel to me.
    But you were able to talk about it with glee and earnestness, in every little aspect, and that's genuinely great. I love the whole series too, barring said title already described here, but even then, I'm glad it was able to connect with you and several others. This series has always been strong because of how much it tries to not rest on its laurels and do something different each time.
    And hey, personally, I'm still holding out a lil bit of hope that something miraculous does happen for the final part of this remake project, but even if it doesn't, I'm really glad it exists. To be given an actual, fully realized JRPG world that's to scale, and have such a wonderful cast all written and acted so excellently, I feel truly lucky to have been able to live long enough to experience that in today's age, where I thought such things to be an impossibility at modern day's graphic fidelity. It feels like a true miracle game, and I doubt we'll ever get something like it again, considering the amount of man hours and money that's gone into it already, let alone the many more that will go into its final part.
    Sorry for the long comment dude, and thank you for your hard work on making videos like this, passion in all forms is great, and I love hearing your opinions whether or not I agree with them.
