  • We spent the morning fixing the slide under the sump in the Sukup grain bin before heading out to field to harvest wet corn. The combine is spitting out corn and we can't figure out why. Ended our day early with rain.

I don’t know what has brought me to your channel. I was born and raised in a small farm town in Wisconsin. I now live in Chicago and hate every second of it. Watching your videos really makes me feel like I’m back home. I’ve also forwarded videos to friends down here to show them what real farming is really like. So thank you. Keep it up

Growing up with the noise and the lights of the city, I always WANTED to trade this life for farming. Unfortunately it's too expensive out here in the Northeast.
I play Farming Simulator games, and they are a lot of fun, but nowhere near as accurate as what you have to do every day. As a side note, m young daughter like to watch me play and pretend she's riding along too.
You are the perfect example of the modern farmer, I am glad I stumbled upon this channel, and now I am here for life.
I am in my late 40's, and my days of being "fit" are well behind me. I may never get to farm, so at least I can live that life through your videos.
One more thing, in a country where farming is a dying art, and many are selling out... God bless you and your family, and everything you guys do. You are what keeps America alive.

On that slide gate for the sump.... I built grain bins for a bit. They were Brock bins. We would take the cutting torch and make a couple slits in the plate above the pipe. Then you grab your welder and weld that plate to the pipe. Can’t count on mechanical fasteners in that situation.

You guys should buy header brushes for your corn head so you never lose kernels straight off the header. They connect to the feeder chains and collect all the lose corn and bring them to the feeder house it’s called 360 yield saver. We bought them for our combine this year but we are still doing beans. You should give them a try!

the trials and tribulations of grain farming. at least you don't have cattle bellering at you. we are still in the low 90's thru the weekend.
for those who may not know, there is a squirrel cage fan under the combine. it is speed and air flow adjustable to provide LIFT to the crop as the crop shakes on the sieves and separators. if you open the screens you lower the air pressure. too much air pressure and you blow the crop out the back. very delicate balance to remove the grain from the chaff. moisture of the crop, up hill, down hill, side hill all makes a difference on how the crop feeds thru the separator. when the crop gets thin you need to up the ground speed to keep the volume of crop consistent into the machine.
the sheer number of moving parts on a combine are staggering. its like a complete assembly line moving down the field. any small adjustment out of perfect, a slipping belt, a bearing going dry and either you throw grain on the ground or the machine is dead in the water until it is corrected. I do know my boss would never spend $300k on a machine that you use 2 months a year. same as that spray coupe. worthless 11 months a year, priceless 1 month a year. that's farming!
I believe the sudden interest in farming videos is because city folk have or had no idea the complexities of modern agriculture. kudos to all the farmers teaching others how it all fits into the grand scheme of our economy. hopefully this new USMCA agreement trump has put together you will get a decent price for your crops. stay safe out there.

The reason it’s called a “Combine” is because it’s a combination of a tractor (to move everything), a reaper (to collect grain) and a thresher (to separate grain and chaff). They were developed off of reapers after someone figured out a good automated threshing machine.

We are holding out here in Michigan for just a little longer. 3 samples averaged at around 17% like to see it at 15 before we harvest. But we also aren't near as big just enough to feed hogs and have some to sell.
