I mean the video does unfairly shit on the UK (the facts are true enough, but mislead the viewer that things are worse than they are), but it's probably a good thing if it causes potential migrants to think more carefully about their decisions beforehand. Plus, from a personal standpoint, I want most of the migrants who come here to be permanent and looking to assimilate, so anything which discourages economic opportunists is probably good.

I applied the same approach as used in the 45 trillion calculation to the investment done by British before 1850s. The estimate of 200 million pounds sterling as the total investment in infrastructure by the British government in India up to the mid-19th century is based on various historical records and estimates. It's worth noting that there is some degree of uncertainty around this figure due to a lack of comprehensive records from the period. That being said, one source that provides an estimate of the British investment in India's infrastructure is the book "The Economic History of India, 1857-1947" by Tirthankar Roy. According to the book, the British invested around 200 million pounds sterling in Indian infrastructure up to the mid-19th century, including the construction of roads, canals, and railways. Another source that supports this estimate is a report by the Indian government's Planning Commission, titled "India's Five Year Plans: An Overview". The report mentions that the British invested around 200 million pounds sterling in India's infrastructure up to the mid-19th century.Using compound interest formula A = P*(1+r/n)^(nt) putting
A= 0.2 billion pound, n = once per year (conservative!) and 0.05 interest (as per the India calculation and t=223 years
Putting into Microsoft Excel (other spreadsheets are available) tells me that:
10622.914 billion i.e 10 trillion sterling was invested in India which can be converted to dollar by multiplying with 4.68 as done by Patnaik which shows that British invested 46 trillion dollars in India. Now you might have understood how Patnaik lied about it. The way Patnaik calculated it is through a false method.

The "Great Stink" had nothing to do with personal hygiene. It was the result of overpopulation in London from the Industrial Revolution overloading the sewage system's capacity to cope, leading to the dumping of human waste into the thames (which has been common in many cities throughout history, and I don't imagine it was much of a problem back when a city of 20,000 people was considered to be huge).
I like India, but it has problems with human waste as well. This is fine, it's still in the early stages of industrialisation, and these things need time to develop. Your eagerness to shit (haha) on Britain is disappointing. Britain does not need to be a shithole for India to do well, others do not need to suffer such that you might prosper. We can both have prosperity in this modern world if we only work for it.
Also Britain had soap before the Conquest of India (it wasn't really colonisation, barely any brits settled there), but it was a luxury item and only for the rich (I think much of it was produced in France). I don't know the extent to which the mass adoption of soap was a consequence of industrialisation or the conquest (or both). It was probably encouraged by victorian social norms (high emphasis on cleanliness, probably in reaction to the filth of overpopulation).

It’s interesting to hear other countries views on the British economy and lifestyle, and this is actually a very true take on our current situation. It’s not just that everything is now expensive; heating, petrol, rent, mortgages, food, the infrastructure is also useless; hospitals, doctors and education are all suffering. Even home improvements are a luxury many ordinary people can’t afford. Definitely agree about the soap, I’ve now been buying it because it’s cheaper and lasts longer. I’ve opted for using cheaper brands and don’t use energy or water like I used to, and food I buy almost daily so not to waste food, hence saves money.
To live in Britain you need to learn to be frugal on a daily basis and there’s no room for saving anymore. You just have to hope nothing big breaks. Loans and credit are very high rates. It’s a struggle but not impossible to live. It’s heartbreaking that the poorest in society are affected the most. I’d hate to think how anyone can live without a decent job, the safety net isn’t even that anymore. Lack of housing and how expensive it is eats away your hard earned cash.
The Great, isn’t so great and technically we shouldn’t even be called that, not just now but because of the atrocities the country did historically. Every Empire has its days and the British Empire expired a long time ago! It really is a great mess!

Great. It is about time for Britons to learn that how easy it is to live on loot from former colonies and very tough to work hard to earn your livelihood and raise/maintain your families

    • @venmis137
      @venmis137 7 หลายเดือนก่อน +5

Britain has never lived on loot from former colonies. A statue of spiritual significance to some random african tribe cannot fuel an industrial economy. It might fetch £30 because someone thought it looked nice, or £30,000 because someone realises that it has anthropological value, but outside of the capital you can get for it (WHICH ISN'T REAL!!!), it has no actual value. An industrial economy is run off coal, iron, services, technical skills, etc. Most of the coal came from Britain. Most of the iron also came from Britain (I should know, I live near to where most of this stuff was mined). This is the case, BECAUSE TRANSPORTING METRIC FUCKTONS OF IRON AND COAL ACROSS THE SEA IS INSANELY HARD IN THE 1820s!!!! The truth of the matter (which is arguably worse in my opinion) is that most of the British Empire was subsidised by british industry. It was operated at a LOSS for the nation, not a profit (this isn't true for colonial profiteers, just the nation as a whole). The entire expedition was justified by a sense of missionary zeal, that by conquering these places Britain was civilising them and improving their lives, something which is arguable and is still perpetuated today.
India was a special case, I think it had more economic value than the other colonies (which were either just dumping grounds for malcontents (the "white" dominions) or twisted philanthropic ventures (Africa)). I'm not entirely sure in this regard. I think the initial conquest was driven by a desire to turn the continent into a giant cotton producing plantation for british textile mills, which would literally be exploitation (but not "Looting", it's a different kind of exploitation), but this idea got fucked because we sourced cheaper cotton from the americas instead. I think that was the cause of the opium wars, the East India Company had conquered India expecting to use much of it as a cotton plantation, but when it got outcompeted by the Americans (who were CLOSER TO BRITAIN) it switched to Opium production, since it could sell that to the chinese and continue to turn a profit.
Plenty of british people work hard for their livelihood and to raise/maintain families, it's insulting to assert that they don't. There are though, some who don't pull their weight, in my view. Our political class is disappointing. They are too entitled and ossified. They don't have what it takes to lead us forward. Starmer will be good at patching up the mistakes of the previous government, and for that I am thankful, but there really is nobody there who is competent and inspiring enough to give the country a sense of mission and lead it somewhere good. I find that to be quite sad.

It's not called Great Britain because it's wonderful.
The word 'Great' becoming attached to 'Britain' comes from medieval practice and not the classical authors. This became a common practice in the twelfth century to distinguish the island of Britannia maior (Greater Britain) from Britannia minor (Lesser Britain), the other medieval Britain Brittany.

The prices in Asia for sugar, oil etc went up last year by about 20%, but this year, these prices fell back to pre 2002 level. That means that world prices for sugar and oil did not rise much compared to pre 2022 prices.
It is only wheat, corn prices that have risen about 20% in Asia.
Why is it that Great Britain prices still remain so high?
It is likely UK's elite who owns these supermarkets etc, want to make extra ordinary profits from ordinary Britons, as the world prices have fallen from their highs.
