    Hey everyone.. Found the issue with the trimming. The left wing had a warp in it.. This was the cause of the extreme trimming and stall tendencies. I'm and idiot for not thinking about that sooner, but I've NEVER had a warped wing on an Eflite product. I'm working with HH on a solution. Thanks Will

      Don't worry, happens to all of us now and then.

      Could you explain what a warped wing is? Where it mounts to the fuselage? The wing itself? was it twisted? I'd really like to know because I needed the exact same amount of trim, 42 clicks.

      @@rotorhead58d when I looked at my Timber straight on, I could tell there was a slight, but noticeable twist in the left wing. Mid to tip.

    Well Will at this point now we know you had a warped wing. I'm glad HH is going to take care of that for you. I know you had the surfaces centered, and 42 clicks of trim is crazy...you should never need anywhere near that much. That kind of off camber situation in the wing due to trim, and the warp...that is going to cause a weird stall characteristic. That said as we discussed, quick and deep cross control inputs at slow speed can get you into trouble with a heavier plane. I can't wait to see you fly one with the wings straight. Awesome airplane. My favorite Timber to date by a good bit. I still haven't had a chance to experiment with the tire pressure much. Looking forward to messing with that. Funny thing, I'm doing the opposite...putting the ST wheels on my SWS. Lol. Great vid brother!

      Thanks Rick.. I flew mine on a 3300 6s. weighed around 500g. Pretty far forward. If you friends have trimming issues, check to see if one of the wings is warped at the tip. Good video, the first I’ve watched expressing some degree of caution in buying this plane. Others have said it’s the “IPhone of RC planes”, others only have rave reviews and no negatives. I have a Super Timber sitting in a box in the garage, and will approach it with more caution because of this video. Subscription added, thanks.

    Glad you painted those prop tips! IMHO Looks so much better that way and wished it came that way from the factory.
    I would think that for the landing gear bolts/nuts, just getting the threads into the nylon such that there is NO pinching of the plastic to the metal landing gear rods would be the way to go. I think putting a couple of pieces of clear/strong Gorilla tape on the mating surface of the elevator to the plastic holder should help ensure those two parts don't come apart (I'll never that it apart unless I need to repair it). As to the crash and repair, I would think Foam-Tac or E6000 would be a great way to repair this beast. I just received mine, haven't built it yet but looking forward to getting her in to the air. Thanks for your video!
    Sure hope HH helps you out with the wing issue and please be sure to report back what you found out. Thanks sir!

    Seems like someone said that Horizon moved the main gear forward to help prevent nose-overs. That puts the wheels further ahead of the CG which makes a plane harder to land without bouncing. I think I would let some air out of the tires. Hard tires seem to bounce worse than soft ones. I’ve never been a fan of the Timber, and I’m going to pass on this one as well. The only high-winged plane I have is the FMS Cub. I guess I’m a low-winger guy. The painted prop tips looked great.

    • @SteffenRC
      @SteffenRC  8 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      I heard that too. I think the bouncy tires were the real issue for me. I deflated them, but I was concerned they were so low, I'd have rolling issues. I'll try those foam wheels and see what I can do. This plane checks all the boxes for me. I love my TT 1.5m, but this has a few more bells and whistles that I can appreciate.

    • @jollyroger2226
      @jollyroger2226 8 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      I think you are right on track concerning the gear placement. A forward rake to the landing gear always makes it more difficult to do a "wheel landing." That is why their big FW 190 was so easy to bounce on landings. That is an accurate scale feature for the 190 - but it is an issue.
      Will - I have watched you fly quite a bit - and I know you are going to be doing a bunch of touch n goes with this. Good for you - go for it. I believe I have heard that pilots flying a full size plane with this type of behavior try to gain a skill set of touching down as gently as possible - then pushing forward on the stick - to try and get rid of lift - and to make it stick on the runway. Sounds good in theory anyway. Good luck with your renewed Super Duper Timber.

    • @txkflier
      @txkflier 8 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@jollyroger2226 I have found that I make better wheel landings if I level off right above the runway and lift my thumb off the stick. It’s hard to know exactly when to push the stick forward, so I don’t.

    • @jollyroger2226
      @jollyroger2226 8 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@txkflier I am glad that works for you. It is hard to get the timing right, but I think I do a similar thing when I try to ease off - and come up with slightly less up elevator at the time the wheels make contact. I don't really have much of a push forward - the way a full size pilot would be doing. But it is interesting and fun for me to try to get smooth landings with whatever type of plane I am flying. Bye the way, I have tried to make a few good 'three point' landings now and then. Most end up pretty ugly! I have a plane or two that lend themselves to three points a little better - and trying to three point on grass has been some easier than asphalt.
      Will - I forgot to mention before that I am sorry for the problem you had. I guess you twisted it's tail just a bit too hard. Ha.

    I ordered one and it will be here soon but I am going to fly it like it costs a million bucks. I like to maiden my planes on a calm day under as little pressure as possible. I have dirt napped so many planes and helicopters by just not taking my time to insure everything is 100% ready to fly. Don't be hesitant to land it and check everything again if you have to make big trim corrections or if you just feel something isn't right because chances are something is wrong. Some planes are almost perfect out of the box and require little to no trim and others are problematic. It is better to call it a day and discharge some lipo's than to try and fly a plane that is giving you a hard time. I wish you luck Sir.

    • @SteffenRC
      @SteffenRC  8 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      As I mentioned this was my 2nd maiden after the first one required a mess of trim. This one was no different. It turns out the wing I had issues installing is also warped at the tip. Which explained the excessive trimming. Just noticed it today... Its a great plane and I'm sure you'll really have fun with yours. I'm waiting on some parts and mine should be ready for great flights and more videos... Thanks Will

    I had the exact same thing happen to me on the second battery. I made a few light touch and go landings then I landed and went over to pick it up and the plastic that the landing gear attaches to was seperated from the body. After further inspection, anywhere there is a part glued and there's yellow paint it is not stuck together well. The paint separated from the foam. I removed the entire piece and used epoxy to glue it back on after stripping all the yellow paint away. also 4 of the slats clips seperated when i tried to remove them so they also got epoxy. Luckily there was no damage and no foam came off during removal. This plane needs a few improvements before I could recommend it. I had 42 clicks of right aileron to trim it out and all mechanical setting were level as per the manual. The bouncing while landing problem was solved when I turned off AS3X before landing. Try it.

    I was into 6ch helis for a few years before I gave planes a go. I made a battery mount mod on my 1st plane (Umx timber evo). I was hesitant to do the same to my 2nd plane (eflite valiant)… crashed the nose heavy valiant due to the same type of stall you encountered. Lesson learned… don’t be afraid to modify something new for better CG and landings.
    Heli setup and builds definitely helped me out with planes. Don’t use trim on a Heli and adjust linkages on your planes so they require the least amount of trim possible, mine seem to fly better that way but maybe it’s just the placebo effect.
    So Question? If you use a lot of trim on a plane are you also reducing the servo travel in that direction? Or losing some servo travel at full input?
    Downside to learning on helis is I just can’t seem to make myself bank and yank, I mix in a lot of rudder and counteract with opposite aileron to hold my turn. And yep that leads to that type of stall if you don’t pull out and throttle up. I reduced rudder rates to 90% to compensate for my ways. I hear this plane is very capable of aerobatics, it may be the next one for me.

    • @SteffenRC
      @SteffenRC  8 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Ryan, Thanks for the story about you path to RC Planes.. I've taught a fair number of pilots and find that those that come from an RC hobby, catch on pretty quick.. So, the trim on a plane should be minimal.. The control surfaces should be pretty much neutral, but sometimes the elevator may be more do to several factors. But the Ailerons should be fairly centered. If not, the plane is out of whack, (which my warped wing was a big issue). Also too much trim will reduce the throw in that direction. I have several planes that will tolerate an aggressive flat turn. This one will handle that better once I get the warped wing sorted out. But not like my lighter high wing planes.

    • @SteffenRC
      @SteffenRC  8 หลายเดือนก่อน

      This is a heavy plane, recovery from a stall isn't instant like many lighter planes I've flown. I was doing a tight flat rudder turn, (left rudder and opposite ail). As it turns out there is a significant warp in the left wing, which is why the trimming was a challenge and the stall tendency.. I shouldn't have tried a tight flat turn with this plane. Its not a 1.5M Turbo Timber... Thanks for watching and commenting.

      From that height there was no catching that one. Could hear the power come up but the wing didn't catch till it was too late. The only mistake was likely too much up elevator 😊

    • @Mode1RC
      @Mode1RC 8 หลายเดือนก่อน

      if you pause the video there was right aileron input most of the way to the ground, which actually makes it worse, as it keeps the left wing stalled. More height and airspeed was needed for a recovery at that point, and a chunk of right rudder.

The other issue which I discovered after, is the Left wing is warped up.. Hence the massive amount of left rudder. Which also doesn't help stall characteristics.. Oh well.. Horizon listened to their customers complaints about nose over on the previous Timbers, hard to be mad at them for listening. They made a change in hopes of resolving it. Did that induce a bouncing issue? Whether it did or not, I don't think it is really of much consequence. The gambling man in me is betting future Timbers will have gear more similar in placement to it's predecessors. I would also not be suprised to see options for aftermarket gear with a more consevative placement. I do like those squishy tires though, sure would like to try them on a different application.

      Thanks Chris. We chatted about this last week.. If the foam tires I'm going to try work out, you might have a chance you test these out..😎

      @RCminded 8 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @SteffenRC too late for that, Horizon actually had them in stock so they are on order already. I think you should keep them and try them on the Ole TT 1.5. I am guessing they are beneficial but raked gear+ springy tires is just too much. Should have been one or the other.

    Mine has the same problem of needing a ton of left aileron trim. Looking at the the undersides of the wing from the rear, I can see that the left wing has a higher angle of attach than the right, causing the plane to want to roll to the right unless you put in a ton of very unacceptable left trim. Mine has at least a half an inch of trim. Either the wings are warped or the fuselage wing mounts were molded improperly. I am very disappointed in this expensive airplane.

      Jim, I'd recommend you take some pictures and send a note to HH. They can be very helpful on resolving issues. I spend a fair amount with HH and have their Elite Membership which pays for itself very quickly. (lots of benefits). I really like this plane (NOW) after issues were resolved. Good luck....

    She will fly much gooder and sportier without the slats.

    • @SteffenRC
      @SteffenRC  หลายเดือนก่อน

      Agree, I don't fly with them anymore. I was going for a cool STOL look and feel, but as you know, there are trade-offs with those slats. Thanks for commenting. Will

    The gap between the left slat and the left wing is not the same as the gap between the right slat and the right wing. This why you have to over trim

    Don’t use the 5000 battery. It makes the plane really heavy and tip over.

      No doubt.. I'll say the new wings make a BIG difference. The warped wing really created a stall that took a bit of time to recover. The new straight wings will recover quicker and/or just not stall.. So, all good..

      Turns out the wing was warped.. Like an idiot I didn't think of that.. I've never had an Eflite plane with a warp in it.. Ugggggg

  • @bigeclipse718
    @bigeclipse718 8 หลายเดือนก่อน

    Throw those slats away. Can't really feel a difference and they could be your trim issue

    • @SteffenRC
      @SteffenRC  8 หลายเดือนก่อน

      My first maiden was without the slats. Actually I could tell a difference in slow flight. But today I found the issue. The left wing had a warp. Which makes sense on why it was hard to trim.

  • @jeffrenman4146
    @jeffrenman4146 5 หลายเดือนก่อน

    Having a lot of ailerons trim is actually just awful… It means as you well know different speeds are affected differently the plane will never fly properly. Sounds like a lemon from horizon I wonder how many others are flying with too much trim

    • @SteffenRC
      @SteffenRC  4 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

    Brother, I slammed a brand new e-flight P47 1.2m into an embankment before ever even lifting off the ground. The elevator just didn’t have enough throw to lift, or safe was limiting my throw. Not sure which. But it SUCKED. Repaired and it flies now, but still. Not fun.
