When I watched Joe Montana and the 49ers play I always had to watch until the end...no matter how badly they were getting beaten you always knew there was a chance that Joe could pull it off. I don't have that kind of faith in Brady. As soon as he gets hit he loses his focus and faith in his line. Joe always trusted that if he did his job everyone else would do theirs.
Montana is the GOAT...period. He had NO equal while he was playing. He was head and shoulders above every other quarterback during his career. His poise, leadership, his ability to make EVERYONE believe they were going to win the game, and ability to read a defense were unmatched. Joe was great in the regular season and even better in the playoffs throughout his entire career. Brady has Manning, and both have choked several times in the post season and in the BIG game. Great players play great when they have to....and Joe was great ALL the time
George Schulz no Joe has choked plenty times in the playoffs. he didn't go to the superbowl every year. he only made 4 sb appearances as tom made it to 7 and won 5!!! I can remember Joe losing to Jeff hostetiler in the nfc championship and has lost plenty of times in the playoffs. he also got stomped in the afc championship when he was with the cheifs against the bills. after superbowl 51 there is no debate. ill take a 5 time superbowl champion and 4 time superbowl mvp who came back from a 25 point deficit heading into the 4th quarter. not even Joe Montana could have pulled that off. plus Brady did it in the free agency era and Montana did it with the same team LOADED with hall of famers. Jerry rice, Ronnie lott, John Taylor, roger Craig, Dwight Clark, bill romanowski and a bunch more. Brady has had only randy moss for really one good season. no debate. sorry.
I agree Montana is the goat! And I am not a 49ers fan at all. Unlike the pampered Brady who has more gates than a cattle sale barn. Montana had no controversies with any of his wins. Funny you should mention that Giants game. He got hurt by Leonard Marshall in that game and actually it ended his time with the 49ers. Otherwise you would have seen a 3pete! Montana was always cool and never lost his head like Brady has with others! And he took so many bad hits. Montana is hands down the best QB to play the game!
Ice J, Knowing what the other teams were going to do, crybaby Brady and the Cheatriots should have won all of those games. The crybaby is a pretty good QB and he should be among the all-time top 30. No more and no less.
I find that interesting Montana actually have 6 rings !!! 4 rings with SB, 1 ring 79 cotton bowl mvp, 1 class ring HOF . No wonder Montana is the greatest QB of all time.
I was there in 1995 when an impromptu announcement given on short notice turned into a party for 5,000 people. It shows the love San Francisco had for the greatest quarterback of all time. I remember how humble and thankful Joe and his family were. George Seifert acted like he had to be there. Steve Young wasn't there (jerk). John Madden, Bill Walsh, and Eddie DeBartolo showed their class. Thank you Joe for all the wonderful memories.
Niners Forever!!! I had the greatest honor in meeting Joe Montana back in March and I just have to say, WOW!!! I'll never forget that moment again! Joe, you'll always be the best quarterback, best football player, and best representation of the NFL!!!
I'm Irish but i remember sb23 in 1989, my dad let me stay up to watch it, i remember joe driving the 9r's' all the way down the field to win it, it made me fall in love with the team and joe, i'm 31 now and yes, i do wear my Montana 16 shirt!!!
i am from Ballymun, Dublin, Ireland born bred and still living here. No sir i am Irish!if you had read my profile it would've told you so. Do not accuse me of being anything else just because i happen to be a fan of American football, Super bowl 23 had a big impression on me as a young boy, watching this man (Montana) doing what he did in this game stays with me to this day, NEVER accuse me of not being something i am most proud of and that is Being 100% Irish
Perfect song at the end. Joe is simply the best and had more heart than anyone. He was hurt got up and played. He was a thinking Quarterback. Joe had ice water in his vein. Joe was a very humble man, he did not go after and seek media coverage he was Joe Montana and there will never be another.
JOE MONTNA will live on as being the undisputed greatest quarterback of all time past, present and futuristic. no words can describe the greatness that is JOE MONTANA he made me become a quarterback and i play every game as he would play thanks for being my hero
What a role model!!!I think there's onle one maybe once in a lifetime.I'm so proud of what he did he my not have cried but i did. THANKS JOE FOR ALL THE GREAT MEMORIES THEY WILL NEVER BE FORGOTTEN.
I remember when George Siefert got to the podium the crowd booed him. John Madden said it best - he's the greatest quarterback of all time. Of course it doesn't hurt to have great receivers, running backs, tight ends, O-line, the best defensive ends, linebackers, safeties, and cornerbacks helping you. Lots of 49ers have at least three rings. It was an amazing run.
Joe Montana won 4 super bowls and he NEVER threw an interception! that is like WOOOOW! he still holds a lot of records like post-season records that even brett favre cannot break.
Joe Montana is a thinking athlete. When MJ decided to go to the basket, he would not know how to change course and he was lucky not going up against a Wilt Chamberlain or a Bill Russel. While Joe won with his ability to read and adjusts to different defenses.
Royalclass, The reason Montana is the best of all time is, he played better and better as the games became more important. Check out his SuperBowl Stats, 11 Td's and 0 INT and the most important stat, 4-0 in SuperBowl games as a starting QB. The fact is, Farve has made critical mistakes in big playoff games that has cost his team wins. All you have to do is look back at this year's NFC Championship game against New Orleans!
simply in a class by himself|for me THE greatest of all time,as a young man and as football player he was a role model for me!thanks for the vid starman417
Joe Montana set the bar for what a QB is supposed to be. The best ever. That is no knock on anyone before or after, but somebody has to be da man, and IMHO, that was Joe Montana. You just couldn't rattle him.
I saw this game. Montana had never won IN Denver. The only city, at that time, in the NFL that he had never won in. I'd seen him come from behind so many times but I'm not too proud to admit I had tears in my eyes for this one.
i just fucking love joe montana, i dont know how he is as a person, but as an athlete is one of the greatest ever, montana is alongside with Michael Jordan, Pele, Babe Ruth
As a cowboy fan I hated the 49ers and montana. People always bring up Rice but remember he won at least one a SB before ever got there. His recievers were Clark and Soloman. Not HOFers. Bill Ring was his running back. Elway got blown out of super bowls. A great QB doesn't allow that to happen. As much as I hated him Montana was the best I ever seen play.
We are truly blessed to have lived in the time of this man. He'll be remembered by fans and people will still be wearing his jersey, 100 years from now.
Some players might have had better stats and some might have had more comebacks but looking across the field at the other team and their Quarterback, there wouldnt be one I feared any more then Joe Montana and the 49ers.
Dan Marino was the youngest to "appear" in SB he was 23 and rookie but lost to Montana in 84 SB. in fact Montana was the youngest to win in SB he was 25, Aikman was 2nd age 26.
Any chance of Brady comparing himself to Montana has been sunk by his loss and performance in the Patriots loss to the Giants this year. That Giant front four rattled Brady!!!
i wonder how many Q.B's now could be just as good or better then Montana, It was a time then when players weren't taught to strip the ball as much or as good at it & the NFL didn't have free agency so the chemistry on the team was the best.
What the hell are you talking about?! Marty Schottenheimer was coach of the Chiefs when Joe played for us. And Joe did quite in Kansas City, 2 playoff trips and one game away from the Super Bowl in 1993. Art Shell coached the Raiders, our mortal enemy.
ok dude i have alot of respect 4 usc cos i have a couple of friends that r usc fans. i do like usc when their not playing against notre dame... good luck to ur trojans in the rose bowl... even though usc is part of notre dames enemy camp i am rooting 4 usc in the rose bowl... were both gonna be happy cos my team notre dame won the hawaii bowl and ur team usc is gonna win the rose bowl... can't we all just get along.
Joe will always be #1 in my heart. My all-time hero. But Brady has a far more impressive NFL resume, even if I make the “perfect” Super Bowl argument for Joe. It doesn’t really matter though, as it was 2 really different era’s of football anyway. I believe Brady would have been very successful in the 80s too, but people don’t seem to remember what a graceful and effective scrambler Joe was. Joe would have run circles around Brady, and Brady has basically said as much. Brady would have gotten KILLED in the 80s. Joe is the greatest of his era. Brady is the greatest of his. Is that so crazy?
In only his fith game ever comming off the bench Montana made the biggest 4rth quarter comeback ever!!!!! 5th game!!!!! Pretty fucking amazing! Was at one point the yougest Quarterback to winn the superbowl. Won his 1st superbowl in his 1st full season. {3rd overall} Was at one point the oldest qb to win the super bowl.Took the Cheifs to there 1st conferce championship in 28 years.
so true THEJDMVP. this guy is the real deal. I need to see brady score a TD in the last drive of SB to start thinking he is the best. Payton M. was in that position a few years ago, they need a TD and he got an INT. so yeha MONTANA the one and only
Joe Montana is the best number 1 he’s not a Sore Loser & number 2 he’s not a Foul Mouth Bawl Baby like the Patriots’ Quarterback Tom Brady or should I say Tom Baby
Right on 707supra ! Don't forget RB Frank Gore , he is on fire !!! Gore will even be better than Roger Craig, The Niners finally found a great RB and A.Smith such a young team and in few years the Niners will be in Super Bowl !
I believe the Niners would have won at least one more with Joe instead of Young. Against Dallas, Joe could have pulled one out. He had the intangible quality, something Young did not have.
God bless Bill Walsh!
He was one of the greatest coaches ever in all of sports!!
We will miss him!!!
I bet you don't feel the same now. Joe was never the comeback king that Brady is. Not even close.
Montana is the GOAT...period.
He had NO equal while he was playing. He was head and shoulders above every other quarterback during his career.
His poise, leadership, his ability to make EVERYONE believe they were going to win the game, and ability to read a defense were unmatched.

Montana was great before Rice got into the league.
G.O.A.T
Best ever. Out of all the retirement quaterback speeches I've seen. Joe is the only one who didn't cry.
Montana never lost a Super Bowl. And he never needed to cheat to win.
well I can tell someone don't like and is mad at the patriots
R8erNation636 #MontanaRealG.O.A.T. I'm a KC CHIEFS fan! But I also like 49ers. Joe did great for Chiefs and 49ers
Sean,
What is wrong with getting mad at or dislike the cheaters, Boston Cheatriots? At least 3 out of 5 SBs won by the cheaters should be nullified.
greatest ever
Simply put, the best QB of ALL TIME!!!!!
Niners Forever!!! I had the greatest honor in meeting Joe Montana back in March and I just have to say, WOW!!! I'll never forget that moment again! Joe, you'll always be the best quarterback, best football player, and best representation of the NFL!!!
Joe Cool, Peyton, and John Elway are the best quarterbacks ever

The greatest QB to ever play. Brady should. Never be mentioned in the same sentence. Montana never lost a super bowl.
Joe Montana 4 Super Bowl rings, 4-0 Super Bowl
Enough Said!

I agree, I remember watching him in the '88 superbowl *I was too young to remember 81 and 84.*
I was there in 1995. I will never forget it. Over 5,000 people turned out.
I grew up rooting against Joe & the 49ers..But I must confess Joe was the greatest QB ever. No one will ever compare to him
l/v been a steelers fan since the 1970s ,,, but joe momtana is one of the greates quarte backs l/v ever seen

Joe Montana is a thinking athlete. When MJ decided to go to the basket, he would not know how to change course and he was lucky not going up against a Wilt Chamberlain or a Bill Russel. While Joe won with his ability to read and adjusts to different defenses.

the whole bay area was going nutz during those plays. The Greatest football player of all time.
yea same for peyton manning. it doesnt matter that he also has mvp's. he's got a commanding field presence like joe or john elway
4 GAMES, 4 SB WINS NO INT...... JUST AMAZING...
one word says it all "LEGEND"
Different time, different NFL. Today's NFL with it's rules is more oriented to the offense.
As much as I hated him Montana was the best I ever seen play.
i will admit, frank gore is a beast.. he doesn't get much attention because he's playing with the niners..
the two best quarterbacks of all time two me are joe cool and Unitas
we were high school team mates.....
The final score
Notre Dame-49
Hawaii-21
Notre Dame-The 2008 Hawaii Bowl Champions
GO IRISH!!
We are truly blessed to have lived in the time of this man. He'll be remembered by fans and people will still be wearing his jersey, 100 years from now.
Terry Bradshaw and Joe Montana are the only 2 QB's to win 4 SB's, too bad Terry Bradshaw is underrated
Some players might have had better stats and some might have had more comebacks but looking across the field at the other team and their Quarterback, there wouldnt be one I feared any more then Joe Montana and the 49ers.

lmao did that music actually come in like that in the ceremony?even joe looked like he had a face like "o jesus thats too much"
i wonder how many Q.B's now could be just as good or better then Montana, It was a time then when players weren't taught to strip the ball as much or as good at it & the NFL didn't have free agency so the chemistry on the team was the best.

Joe Montana is the best number 1 he’s not a Sore Loser & number 2 he’s not a Foul Mouth Bawl Baby like the Patriots’ Quarterback Tom Brady or should I say Tom Baby
Totally agree.
no he was the best
Tom Brady can't hold Joe's jock. Best Qb to ever play the game. Joe Cool.
Right on 707supra ! Don't forget RB Frank Gore , he is on fire !!! Gore will even be better than Roger Craig, The Niners finally found a great RB and A.Smith such a young team and in few years the Niners will be in Super Bowl !
Qb for the Kansas City Chiefs # 19 JOE MON-TAN-A
I believe the Niners would have won at least one more with Joe instead of Young.
Against Dallas, Joe could have pulled one out. He had the intangible quality, something Young did not have.
When the chips were down you just knew he was going to beat you.
SImply the greatest ever.
I hate saying this, because i hate the niners. But he was the best.
EVER
Gosh I remember this, I was about 10, and needless to say I cried my eyes out.
i would actually take elway and marino over montana.. montana was a great qb playing with great teams while marino and elway wasn't so lucky..
