It's actually sad to remember that Percy was really only 13 - 14 years old at the time and Luke was maybe 16 - 17. So this was really scaring for Percy.
I find that with the older the audience gets/the longer they've known the series, the easier Luke is to sympathize with. When I was a kid I was very much in Percy's book one stance, which was pretty much "Luke you're being dumb." The older I got, the easier it was to sympathize with Luke feeling betrayed by everyone he put his faith in. He still chose the worst solution, but it didn't come from nowhere. I like that before the last book, you can see that Luke regrets his decision but believes he's in too deep to stop.
Honestly throughout the whole story I really had that sinking feeling in my stomach, I hated how Luke acted, and how he was treated. I felt ever worse when he died. He was mistreated and under cared for. He was just trying to figure out how to deal with his problems, and he chose the wrong path. His ending was so terrible.
honestly if I can find the time and the right people to help put this together, I would love to do an animatic of the scene where Luke regains control and stabs himself, but he's singing, "I swore I'd do anything. I didn't care if I hurt anyone. It never paid to be a good kid. A good kid. A good son. The gods were never on our side, so I think it's time they heard our call. And soon they'll see what I did... and today the gods won't fall." I can picture it so perfectly lol

I really admire how the musical captured Luke and Percy's relationship in just a few line better than in the movie, the musical really gets how Luke was a father/big brother figure to Percy who never had those, making Luke's betrayal even more painful
Man, i never thought it that way, but in fact, you're right, Poseidon still wasn't there, Gabe was him, and still there wasn't Paul, in general many demigods had bad family lives, even more so they trusted Luke as this parent figure, and i think that's another reason why somes like Ethan or Silena joined him, and i think this makes his betrayal even more painful if we think about it
Oh god, I just realised. Luke made his weak spot the place where he hurt Percy. They have matching scars. He made hurting Percy his weakness. The thing that would kill him. Hurting an innocent kid that he cared about against his will.
Unfortunately, that's not quite true. After reading this I looked it up, and Luke's weak spot is under the armpit on the left side, not his palm. He has to unclasp his armor to reach the spot.
Luke’s weak spot is actually under his armpit. I always assumed that it was a reference to how Thalia stabbed him there and shoved him off of the cliff in The Titan’s Curse. As if Thalia rejecting him and nearly killing hon was something that hurt Luke the most. One also must wonder what connected Luke to the mortal coil in the River Styx. I’m thinking that it was probably Annabeth, as Thalia had tried to kill Luke and was forever out of reach once she had joined the Hunters of Artemis, whereas Annabeth still sympathized with Luke and refused to fight him even when Percy and the others were at risk.

I love how they reuse the good kid tune yet change the lyrics to fit Luke's POV. Percy's whole life he wants to fit in and be a good kid But Luke has realised that all the effort he put into being good was useless to him so why be a good kid or a good son.
I haven't watched the musical (I Haven't been able to find a video of it online) but I've seen clips and listened to all the songs, and honestly, this is one of my favourites. the way Luke sings Percy's song of searching for acceptance back at him in a cruel irony is amazing. and this animatic just made me like the song so much more! my favourite bit is 1:10, the true face of "oh shit."
Every time Luke says “good” it sends shivers down my spine. It shows that he’s willing to be a puppet just to get his revenge. But I can’t find it in myself to blame him for it. Everything he’s been through gave him every reason to hate the gods. It gave Kronos the perfect way to twist and manipulate him into the nearly perfect weapon.
I love the shadows, and that you didn't have just one scene for like 1 minute, but you kept the characters moving, even though I bet it took a lot of work! I also love the really emotional expressions! You really nailed the feeling and mood!
This song reminds me so much of Varian in Ready As I’ll Ever Be, like the bit where Luke says for what, it’s exactly like “but whatever I’ve done you’ve deserved” and where he says “I’ve done anything” makes me think of “believe me I know I’ve sunk pretty low”

This is so great! I was thinking today of how I would block that scene, and I liked the fact that Luke has his back turned when revealing he’s the lightning thief. It allows Percy to realize what’s going on without seeing Luke’s face, so that way the next time he sees Luke it’s in a completely different light. Also I had it in my head that Luke would pull out his sword at that exact line so it felt satisfying to see that animated! Great work!

Luke has always been one of my favorite characters. He is so complicated and there are so many things that go into his characters but at the end of the day he was just a scared kid who grew up desperate for his father's love and acted out when he didn't get what he was working so hard for.
I love how this basicly sums up luke's side of the story! I love the animations of the heads falling and the scorpion bite weakening percy! Please keep it up!
Sorry, but the way Luke says “Good!” at 1:29 when Percy says that Kronos is using him just hurts me so much, because I’m finally getting it, and Hermes was a terrible father. Luke was scared of his mom because she tried to become the oracle, and Hermes knew, and he did nothing. I think that although it was wrong of him to betray his family, (the campers, not the gods) he had every reason to do so.

After watching this video for ..the 10th time(it’s too good I can’t stop) I remember in one of the later books that when Percy told Annebeth about this scene she pointed out that Luke had shown him mercy and let him live. Then, when Percy wasn’t convinced she explained that Luke could have easily killed him, he was still a newbie and didn’t know how to fight, Luke was a master swordsman so instead of playing around and throwing a scorpion at him and giving him an opening to save himself, he could have just challenged to a duel and killed him. However, he didn’t which meant that even though he was angry at the gods enough to side with Cronos he didn’t actually want to hurt Percy or any of his fellow half bloods that we all know have the same or similar struggles as each other which makes them the only ones who can relate to what Luke is going through. He shows plenty of signs throughout the series of being conflicted with going against his former friends and family. I won’t spoil anything else if someone hasn’t read the books, but honestly overall I never saw Luke as a bad guy his actions were bad and extreme , but I could never be convinced that he was really evil, just angry, confused, and frustrated with the life he lived and the bad stuff that all connected back to his dad who it felt like never really gave him a lot of attention. Honestly I’m surprised it took this long for a halfblood to revolt against the gods, they are very neglectful of their kids and with their lives being constantly in danger of monsters their mortal parents can’t see or fight that would easily build resentment. So in the end I just feel really bad for him (shrug) he had a rough life and he tried to get some control back, but the cost was betraying his friends.
This is so freaking awesome! How you draw Percy's realization that Luke betrayed him is just amazingly well done, and the sequence where he's scotting away is really well animated! Keep up the great work!
Omg that last scene with Luke wielding Backbiter and then the scorpion was absolutely fabulous!!! It just made the scene so much more powerful because it shows the intensity of the situation Percy was in as Luke confronted ^w^
I’M SO LATE BUT YOU REMEMBERED IT! RIPTIDE BEING GOLD AND NOT BLUE, AND BACKSTABBER!! This is SO ACCURATE! It makes me remember that Luke was of high schooler age, maybe adult age, while Percy was in about seventh grade! I HAVE to appreciate the detail of Luke tearing off his necklace, Backstabber being celestial bronze and metal and that creeping out Percy, his quest to get that golden apple, Luke slashing at the water with his hand, probably indicating his hatred for Percy. Even the way Luke slashes at Percy before summoning the scorpion. Instantly subbed!
Luke’s story is really really tragic and this puts everything into perspective. You can see how sad he looks and how much he just wanted love from his dad, y’know?
One of my favorite songs from the musical. Represented perfectly. Great animatic. Luke is such a tortured soul. He went through so much. He wasn't the best guy, but in the end, he made the right choice. Hayden emphasizes the pain in Luke's voice. Love this so much.
AHH THIS WAS SO GOOD!! the expressions you drew percy with really expresses how panic inducing this moment would've been for him, and i like that you made him smaller since he is supposed to be pretty young in this scene!! also just luke in general is sooo book accurate hes very scary and clearly 'villainous' but imo he's very human and i like that you showed flashbacks too!! there are so many little details that i adore in this animatic you did such a great job on this!! :D

I'm glad you drawn the age gap between Percy and Luke. I watched the musical recently and it's been a long time since I read the books. I really respect it, many make them the same age when Percy is 12 (Maybe 13) and Luke is 17.

After watching this video for ..the 10th time(it’s too good I can’t stop) I remember in one of the later books that when Percy told Annebeth about this scene she pointed out that Luke had shown him mercy and let him live. Then, when Percy wasn’t convinced she explained that Luke could have easily killed him, he was still a newbie and didn’t know how to fight, Luke was a master swordsman so instead of playing around and throwing a scorpion at him and giving him an opening to save himself, he could have just challenged to a duel and killed him. However, he didn’t which meant that even though he was angry at the gods enough to side with Cronos he didn’t actually want to hurt Percy or any of his fellow half bloods that we all know have the same or similar struggles as each other which makes them the only ones who can relate to what Luke is going through. He shows plenty of signs throughout the series of being conflicted with going against his former friends and family. I won’t spoil anything else if someone hasn’t read the books, but honestly overall I never saw Luke as a bad guy his actions were bad and extreme , but I could never be convinced that he was really evil, just angry, confused, and frustrated with the life he lived and the bad stuff that all connected back to his dad who it felt like never really gave him a lot of attention. Honestly I’m surprised it took this long for a halfblood to revolt against the gods, they are very neglectful of their kids and with their lives being constantly in danger of monsters their mortal parents can’t see or fight that would easily build resentment. So in the end I just feel really bad for him (shrug) he had a rough life and he tried to get some control back, but the cost was betraying his friends.

This is so freaking awesome! How you draw Percy's realization that Luke betrayed him is just amazingly well done, and the sequence where he's scotting away is really well animated! Keep up the great work!
Omg that last scene with Luke wielding Backbiter and then the scorpion was absolutely fabulous!!! It just made the scene so much more powerful because it shows the intensity of the situation Percy was in as Luke confronted ^w^

I’M SO LATE BUT YOU REMEMBERED IT! RIPTIDE BEING GOLD AND NOT BLUE, AND BACKSTABBER!! This is SO ACCURATE! It makes me remember that Luke was of high schooler age, maybe adult age, while Percy was in about seventh grade! I HAVE to appreciate the detail of Luke tearing off his necklace, Backstabber being celestial bronze and metal and that creeping out Percy, his quest to get that golden apple, Luke slashing at the water with his hand, probably indicating his hatred for Percy. Even the way Luke slashes at Percy before summoning the scorpion. Instantly subbed!

Luke’s story is really really tragic and this puts everything into perspective. You can see how sad he looks and how much he just wanted love from his dad, y’know?
“Betrayed by a friend” that just makes it so much more depressing when you realize Luke saw Percy as a friend
One of my favorite songs from the musical. Represented perfectly. Great animatic. Luke is such a tortured soul. He went through so much. He wasn't the best guy, but in the end, he made the right choice. Hayden emphasizes the pain in Luke's voice. Love this so much.
AHH THIS WAS SO GOOD!! the expressions you drew percy with really expresses how panic inducing this moment would've been for him, and i like that you made him smaller since he is supposed to be pretty young in this scene!! also just luke in general is sooo book accurate hes very scary and clearly 'villainous' but imo he's very human and i like that you showed flashbacks too!! there are so many little details that i adore in this animatic you did such a great job on this!! :D
OH OH OH AND THE EXTRA TIME YOU ADDED ON THE PAUSE BEFORE PERCY SAYS LUKE IS THE LIGHTNING THIEF TO SHOW PERCY'S FEAR GROWING IN HIS FACE AND JUST SHOWING HID REALIZATION IN GENERAL IT WAS SUCH A GOOD DETAIL!!

I'm glad you drawn the age gap between Percy and Luke. I watched the musical recently and it's been a long time since I read the books. I really respect it, many make them the same age when Percy is 12 (Maybe 13) and Luke is 17.

The way he sings "I don't care if I hurt anyone" His voice almost cracks a little or like he's holding back some tears. His reprise of good kid is so emotional and sad. I never really felt bad for Luke(until The Last Olympian) but that makes me feel so bad for him also your animation with it just is really good and I like how you made Percy look 12 because he is and I feel like everyone forgets that
