Anandashram's Great Goan Thalis in Panjim Since 1945

  • Anandashram is an unassuming Goan heritage restaurant that has been serving delicious, home-style food in Panjim for 78 years.
A short walk from Campal and the Head Post Office is Panjim’s beautiful 31 January Road, which leads to Fontainhas from San Tome. It is lined with elegant heritage buildings in all colours, and an increasing number of trendy cafes and boutique hotels catering to tourists. Tucked amidst these tourist magnets, right opposite Hotel Venite, is Hotel Anandashram. It opened in Panjim 2 years before India’s independence, and 16 years before Goa’s.
Hotel Anandashram Google Maps location: goo.gl/maps/kj...
Timings: 12 to 3 pm; 7.30 to 10 pm; Sunday evenings closed
Note: Hotel Anandashram is on a pedestrian- and two-wheeler-only, one-way street
It’s 1 pm when we arrive and the lunch service at Anandashram is underway. Office-going Ponjekars have slipped in for lunch that tastes like home.
Before we can think about what to have for lunch, it’s time to refresh ourselves after a hot day in Mapusa market, with some chilled kokum and jeera sodas. Should we have kingfish (visvon), modso (lemon fish), bangdo (mackerel), bombil (Bombay duck), chonak (sea bass/sea perch) or veg thali?
We decide on a chonal thali and veg thalis with sungta (prawns) and xinaneo (mussels) rawa fry on the side. The #fishthali costs Rs 250 and veg thali Rs 120. The sungta and xinaneo fries were Rs 400 each.
The veg #thali had #Goan fat rice, dal, chana (potol/peas) bhaji, bhendi bhaji, sol kadi, curds, salad, papad, pickle and potato fry (batata fodi).
The #chonak thali had #Goa fat rice, fish curry, fish head curry, bhendi bhaji, kismur, sol kadi, pickle, salad and a big piece of fried chonak
The #fishcurry was absolutely delicious - perfect blend of chillis and turmeric - and spicy!
So next time you are visiting San Tome and #Fontainhas in #Panjim and want to eat like Goans do, step into the door to the red house opposite Venite on Rua 31 de Janeiro, and enjoy a real taste of Goa that’s easy on both the stomach and the pocket.

Lesley - I came across your vlogs by chance and ever since then love watching them. Love your presentation , Maria , Viola and other friends. You guys are so much fun to be around. I would love to meet you guys in person some day. Also Pushpa is cute. What she meant is in Bengal we eat more or Pond or lake fish which doesn’t have a strong smell and fish in goa is sea fish which has a distinct smell due to salty water. However I love Goa and Goan food and people. I don’t mind settling there for there rest of my life ❤❤❤❤❤ much love to all of you ❤

Spot on with the comment about the curry. Good curry makes the thali. The rest is mostly the same at different places, but the curries change. All the best with your channel, I'm subscribed and binge watching your videos. All the places you visit are now in my Google maps want to go list. It is swelling by the minute.😄

Hi Lesley, hope you are well. Me and my husband enjoy watching your videos. We are basically goans working in the UK. After watching your videos we feel like coming back home. We love the presentation of your videos. I have noticed Pushpa always criticises our goan fish dishes, on the contrary she should love it as you said our fish is out of this world All the best for future videos, try to show more Panjim eateries. In one of the videos of our lady at you place we had a glimpse of your home, we would love to see the tour of your home. Also could you give background of yourself like what you do for a living so that it can inspire us to come back home. Mog Asum :)

Same drama one of my bengali freind, her reaction about coconut being used n Dat too as if it was some very dirty way of cooking my God I got pissed off at her reaction, how can u not accept anybody else's style of cooking n how can u criticise others? We maharastrian people use coconut in everything n also my inlaws in karnataka n we don't say yuck to their mustard oil preparations I mean we r all educated people n India is a country of diverse cultures isn't it but I got really pissed on seeing pushpas reaction as it reminded me of my Kolkata freind

Each cuisine has its own plus points. Bengali cuisine is based around mustard and mustard oil. Also the types of fish available differ a lot. Although I am accustomed to goan cuisine, I like bengali cuisine too, except for the fish head in lentils.

      @lesleyingoa  ปีที่แล้ว +2

Yes, Bengali fish is wonderful. All Bengali food, in fact. Pushpa makes delicious mashed prawns in mustard oil and different kinds of fish 'shorshey' with mustard kashundi. really fantastic

Seeing your blog,I went to the above restaurant, today. Got myself chonak thali. It had beans sabji, patal bhaji, so called prawns hooman.... , No tisryo instead there was a spicy chicken tikha Masala!!!. No prawns seen in hooman, on asking ,I was given another vaati hooman but this time with only one small shrimp.... it was spicy though... DID NOT LIKE IT. Overall 2/10 rating. Requesting you to please don't solicit these restaurants in your blogs.

😢 after seeing the ad yesterday we went there. But experience was very bad.price was not mentioned in menu. After eating they charged 500 for fry chonak. We surprised.it was not worth. And thali was just so so. We don't recommend this hotel . Totally waste.

I hate the fresh water fish and also the way Bengalis/ Biharis prepare their fish. But I agree , I would keep the sensibilities of the community in mind and put it mildly and maybe never comment on their food. Being married to a Goan we love our fish, we love our rice and we shall defend our food.
