Amazing Helicopter Rescue in New Zealand

- This is two people being rescued in high winds by helicopter from the Manawatu Gorge in New Zealand today after their truck went off the edge into the river. www.rescue.org.... Two police officers jumped in the freezing cold water to save them and have been described as "heroes" after they spent an hour submerged in the Manawatu River keeping the head of a truck driver above water. Both people in the truck were taken to the hospital and did not have serious injuries. Three of their rescuers were also taken to the hospital, but were not admitted. An outstanding joint effort from all the emergency services involved.

That was one dicey resque: near the cliff being battered about by the wind and setting the rescuer into a small pocket of rocks. Bravo!!!!

Hovering a helicopter without wind is tricky enough as it is, dealing with gusts like that is absolutely amazing! I can't even imagine how much concentration it took for that pilot to keep that heli as still as he did! He is certainly in the right career! 👍
He is our local rescue hero, the police got awards but the helicopter pilots boss would not allow him to go on the show "heroes and survivors" the cops had to do the show alone. He should have received some kind of recegnition. He is ex-military and says that this is one of the most testing times in his career.

Astonishing, I am very impressed. Not being a pilot, I have no idea how risky this rescue was, but with the wind it looks to be challenging in the extreme!

I've flown up the Manawatu gorge a number of times, and can appreciate how difficult this rescue must have been. It looked like it was blowing big time and that wind just funnels through that gorge. Hugh respect for the pilot and the rescue services who took part in this event.

I do hoist rescues in that same helo, I commend them because the wind was no joke. That some tough stuff there!

This is actually my local rescue helicopter and I see it every day. I think I was in class this day when this happened and it flew over a few times coming and going from the hospital. I’ve actually been inside the helicopter and it’s way smaller inside than you would think. Pretty cool!

I flew some times in a BK117 on miuntain rescue in Catalonia. And this is the bigger cabin we used !!! We had two BO105S and a AS350B3 and that’s really small cabin.

Struggle yea mate choppers are hard in the wind and worse when you got a offset weight /load it makes correcting the chopper very difficult , hes got the the tallent that man.

it's the same... in Japan Kawasaki build the BK117 in Europe Airbus the EC-145. the new one called H-145.
It's not the same. This is an actual BK 117, most likely a B2 or C1. The EC 145 is a modern version of it and the official production name is BK 117 C2 (with "open" tail rotor) and D2 (with Fenestron).
Ummmm....almost its a BK117b2 a but a ec145 can also be called a Bk117 a Ec145c2 can be called a BK117c2 and a H145(ec145T2) can also be called a BK117d2
Essentially, yes. BK-117 and EC-145/H145 are the same type, their development was a joint German/Japanese venture. There is obviously slight differences to the airframe and tailboom, but most of the underlying components are the same. So much so, any updates or improvements Airbus makes to the H145 apply also to the BK-117, because again they are the same type.
BK-117 is not manufactured anymore but the old airframes are kept continually updated with Airbus’ new technologies. These helicopters are used quite extensively in Oceania.
