    Billy, I just want to give you a pat on the back. I watch a lot of drone videos and other videos, and honestly, I think you are one of the better speakers and presenters on them. Dude, you're a natural for this stuff. I've been a musician all of my life, and it's only in the last 4 or 5 years that I feel I've really made an improvement in my speech on stage. You've got a clear and concise voice and plenty of enthusiasm, and, something very important also. You always seem to have done your homework. You always seem to be prepared for your presentations, and in this case, even using notes on your iPad. Good job...., young man, and keep up the good work. Marc T.

    Billy, first off, another good, informative video. The last three days, I've spent the better parts of the day watching and researching batteries on the net. The main thing I've seen, that concerns me is the very real possibility of on of them failing, or basically exploding. It could definitely burn down your house, or also fill the house with toxic fumes, but I will say that most of those fires I watched were with the other kinds of lipo batteries that are NOT DJI. I did see one video where a guy tried putting a DJI bat in a drone and it started to smoke so he pulled it out right away. The last thing I want to do here is scare everybody to death and make everybody fearful, but at the same time, it's something to be aware of and possibly deal with. Of all the vids I've watched, the ammo cans or bat safe containers, seem to be your best bet, but make sure to at least, take out the gasket or part of it so if it doesent blow, and there's a place for the smoke and some flames or sparks to escape. They also recommend you can drill some holes in the can instead. The other part of this is to keep either container on a safe surface and maybe 3 or 4 feet away from any flammable stuff like maybe a metal table in your garage or something. Other than this failure possibility, everything you said here seems to be right on. Thanks again, for a very informative video. Marc T.

    Have you seen the videos on how to relieve the gas causing the swelling. They just pin prick the silver foil and they deflate and will continue to function and your drone will show remaining charge so no need to worry about using de-gassed batteries.

    Hey Billy, I agree that using drone batteries as phone chargers makes no sense, but there have been times when I charged my zoom batteries to 100% in anticipation of a flight and then something came up making the flight impossible, so rather than storing a fully charged battery, I used the little DJI "turn your battery into a charger" gizmo to plug into something like a phone or iPad just to discharge the battery down to 50% before storing it. What are your thoughts on that?

    I have an Evo 1...but I'm assuming all these smart batteries are similar. My question is: If I store my batteries at 25-40% charge for an extended time... do they stay at that charge? Or will I need to charge them up to 40% again every few weeks/months? And if so, do I only charge them back to 40% or all the way back to 100%?

    Read. I have been flying fpv drones for years now. I own alot of lipo batteries. #1 tip is the battery should always be in storage charge, 3.8v per cell. You should charge before you fly, come home and storage charge all your batteries. My rule is 24hours max at full charge. Dji doesnt allow this, their batteries are proprietary and expensive so they are happy to see em puff. Lets make a storage charger/discharger for dji batteries. Alll my lipo rc chargers do this and balance the cells every time. I can adjust current rate etc. Lipos should be charged at a 1c rate. 1300mah = 1.3a. I always flew my batteries from 4.2v-3.5v per cell. Then back to 3.8 for storage. Lipo hv is a little different. Lipo-hv max voltage is 4.35v and storage is 3.8v. All my rc chargers only store @ 3.8v. But I hear 3.7-3.8 I never had a lipo-hv battery drop out of the air at a higher voltage than all my lipos. At 3.3v lipos and lipo-hv will start dropping fast. "We only need an adapter to go from dji battery to balance connecter and a +- for all cells." Should be easy.

    Hi this is a very helpful video you have shared for dji drone users. I was looking for is that after the batteries have discharged to 20% or so, do we remove them from the charging hub and store it away, specially if we don't use the drone for months. I only use drone when i go on vacation in six months or a year so dont use the drone regularly. If you can answer this would be helpful and appreciate this.

    does the Mavic Mini battery auto dischagre too?

    • @bryanbuff
      @bryanbuff 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Mavic Mini uses Lithium Ion (vs the Li-Po batteries on the other drones), so they don’t need to auto-discharge. One advantage of the Li-Ion batteries is that hold their charge much longer when not in use.

    Hi Billy, Need help with a question about my DJI Mavic Pro batteries...I bought 2 extras, used all 3 in CA for about a year w/ not a lot of use (12 hours total between all 3), stored them for about a year, and then moved to FL. Now that I'm in FL, I tried charging my 3 DJI batteries on my DJI charging hub. 1 battery blinked 25% green and appeared to be charging, the other 2 batteries lights didn't come on at all. I charged all 3 on the hub for about 10 hours. Each battery will not come on once placed in my drone. Do I need 3 new batteries? Or is there a way to charge these batteries? Please advise. I'd hate to pay another $150 each X 3 for new batteries if I don't have too. And, in your next battery video would you please address battery troubleshooting? Thank you for your help. Cindy

    • @craigwflys
      @craigwflys 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      I know you asked this a couple months ago but if I had to guess he probably ran the batteries way down after flying and instead of letting them cool down sufficiently he went ahead and started charging them which created an abundant amount of heat. Several years ago I did this in an RC helicopter and not only did the LiPo swell a lot but it got so hot it turned the outer plastic wrapping brown with little bubbles. Luckily I was home and smelled the burning.

    • @anonymous134y
      @anonymous134y 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@thelonehellyranger01 you can't on mavic air so you probably can't on most drones that came out before it.
      Just turn your drone on and run it to 2dots after use. I usually fly my drone and bring it back 20%-30% then don't charge it if I don't need to. So this discharge function isn't actually needed as much in real-world scenarios as you would think. If you charged up 3 before the day and use 2 then you would only need to discharge 1.

    Good info. But an FYI all of my Mavic Air batteries have some front to back wobble, but it's because the "feet" numbs on the bottom of the battery are shorter on the terminal side than the other end. So it's important to pick the battery up, turn it over and look at the seams of the printer area as you hold it eye level the seams should make parallel lines as you tilt and then return to flat at eye level. If there is a bulge you will see the lines not come together but you will see the arch of the bulge. Harder to explain than to just do my test.

  • @jylogura

    Great tips. I got a Mavic 2 Pro in December and love it. I fly in Japan. I’ve been very careful with the batteries. I try to treat them as carefully as I would treat the quad itself.
    I heard an interesting tip was not to watch the battery percentage, but rather pay attention to the voltage of each cell. The reason being that percentage is not an accurate reading of the performance of the battery. It can suddenly go down depending on the conditions. By looking at the voltage you’ll get a more accurate reading of the health of the battery while in flight and its energy needs. With that in mind, it’s suggested that you never let the cells go below 3.6 volts. This prevents the battery from overwork and helps extend the life of the cells. Doing this from my own experience, I end up consistently ending my flight at around 25-20% and with an average of of 23-minutes of flight time. FYI: I just rotate two batteries.

    Great video as usual, my question is in the app the charge count that you see. Is there a discharge % that the battery needs to drop to or any time you charge to 100% will that count go up by one count.

    Hi, I'm interested to know your thoughts on DJI batteries. I think the flight battery is the weak point with any DJI drone, as Lipos have a short lifespan and when DJI stop producing them, which I believe they have for the Mavic Pro, the drone essentially becomes unusable. Do you know if there are any third party batteries which will work reliably? Thanks

    Hay Billy another great vid, just a question about the batteries, does all this info count towards the Mavic mini batteries as they are lithium ion as apposed to lithium polymer? Just curious as I am a mini flyer.
    Cheers keep the excellent vids and stay safe.

      From what I read, Mavic Mini batteries are less intelligent (even though they cost $45??), and do not discharge themselves. You need to manually do that.

    One of my batteries for the mavic air 2, after a short flight, I tried to turn the batt off it would not turn off after numerous attempts. I pulled the batt out of the drone tried again to turn it off, nothing. So I placed the batt back in the drone it still had 3lights on . The drone hovered
    at the 4ft height for 30 seconds and fell to the ground breaking the gimbal. Has anyone had this problem and what recourse do I have. The drone is only 4 months old. This is the second time this has happened. The first time I had a hard time turning it off,but eventually it shut down. I charged straight from the brick ,flew it with no problems. Each time there were 3 lights on the batt.

    lel - My Mavic 1 Pro still operates all 3 batteries that came with the "Fly More Combo". 80 loading cyles everage. 20 mins. no problem, and land them at 20%.
    And if you don't know when you'll fly your drone again, charge all of them to full, and set each to 1 day auto-discharge.

      Same here. Using a couple of my Mavic Air batteries only as power banks ever since they started to swell. I figure it is safer since they don't heat up as much compared to when using them on the actual drone. But always a risk the more they swell.
