The exposed hands in truck mode are annoying, but not enough to skip it. I’m sure someone will make an upgrade kit for him that will fit it. It will probably come with a nicer axe as well.
I can see an easy upgrade kit in the form of just doing that “shield” kibble from the earthrise cliffjumper/bumblebee mold. Have a simple panel with two pegs that slide into the hands that covers the gap
@@robthepuppet7007 That's low hanging fruit, honestly. I'd expect DNA Design or some group doing injection moulding to provide a spiffier axe alongside attaching panels that would unfold to fill out the rear of the alt. mode. Maybe they'd make a bigger transforming gun too to pad out their release.
So far I am liking this figure. I really hope the guns are able to be swapped with all the Gamer figures. That way it feels like weapon swapping is a play pattern. It will be a big miss if they didn't plan for that.
LA Prowl, LC Tarn, and now SSG Optimus. all have great poseability. Prowl is a bit of a hassle to transform right and Tarn has a couple minor nitpicks but overall, I am very happy with the current engineering in these transformers. hopefully Hasbro is smart and does repaints
You can totally make an awesome double handed axe wielding pose with him. If you mistransform him a bit, you can get some really great butterfly joints in the arms and it helps with a lot of those poses.
the one big problem I had with the original toy was that it was only deluxe sized, which felt far too small for someone like Optimus when everyone else was a deluxe (maybe if wfc Bumblebee and a few others had scout sized figures so that Optimus could look big next to them, but oh well, hindsight and all)
You can get some twohanded poses, but it's pretty limited. His fists can't rotate all the way in those cuffs, especially with the axe in them. He can't do the axe pose he does in the manual. Though he can do the quick melee, so good enough for me.
Not that I’ve heard, but if he’s good, then he’ll be both my first Commander AND the last of the 1986 movie Autobots for my personal collection (POTP Hot Rod/Rodimus, TR Wheelie, Siege Springer, Bumblebee movie Arcee, 86 Kup, and Velocitron Blurr).
I just got mine today and honestly, as someone who never played the game and got the figure because the design looks awesome, the gun only being usable by pulling off the arm is a massive detriment for me. I really dislike the way it looks when mounted, so the lack of a handle means I'm pretty much stuck posing him without the gun (which also can't store anywhere in robot mode, another point against it), plus the peg holding that arm on is loose on mine as well and it pops off pretty much any time I try to move it. I agree that the visible hands in truck mode is a minor annoyance, but the way the gun works and the usability issues it causes for the arm is major enough to knock it down several pegs in my book
A nice review of a nice toy! And I agree the fists being exposed in vehicle mode here are pretty much a nonissue. It’s clear that’s not really meant to be a side we really look at the toy from. This isn’t PotP Rodimus, where the fists were over the truck cab.
About the gap in the back of the truck, not only is that the side of the alt mode you see the most during gameplay (when playing as Optimus), there are Automobile enthusiasts (like The Lazy Eyebrow) who praise the attention to detail on the alt modes.
I wouldn't call this a dramatic improvement over the original. It's not worse either it's just different. They both have their pros and cons. I will say in vehicle mode there are two things I think the original did better. One is that yeah the back of the figure is actually accurate to the game with painted tail lights even provided you actually transform his knees correctly in vehicle mode. I wouldn't typically care about the back of a figure but when the designers specifically bragged about how accurate these were suppose to be to the game only for Optimus to not be accurate in either mode they kinda of drew more attention to that area. The other thing I noticed and it doesn't even make sense why this part isn't accurate because they soecifically painted the side pannels of the vehicle to be the wrong color. The pannels are molded in blue and painted in red but those pannels are SUPPOSE to be blue so why did they paint them? The pannels are solid and correctly colored in blue in the original toy. Here they're broken up and they painted the wrong section. The front part of that pannel that's molded in red should be painted in blue to match the back half but instead they painted the back half to match the front resulting in the blue pannel on the side of his vehicle mode being the wrong color. I will say that the robot mode minus the back of the figure which isn't accurate on either version, is better at least from the front. This figure handles the kibble mostly better than the original one did. I think the back pack cleaned up slightly better on the original but again since the backs aren't accurate on either version I can't really complain too much. I will say the gun storage in vehicle mode is better on this version since the weapon storage on the original didn't even work at all. The peg was too short to even properly fit the way it was ment to store away officially and the gun was designed to fold up but trying to store it that way would trigger the gun to unfold itself. It actually stores better if you just don't transform the gun at all and use the same handle you would use for robot mode rather than it's shorter second handle that was suppose to specifically be for vehicle mode. Another thing this figure did improve on is the axe cause the original didn't even include one and I had to pull an Axe from a different figure that kind of looked like the game model in order to give him one. At the end of the day I think it's just a matter of personal preference. I personally prefer smaller figures anyway and don't care about scale so I'm happy to stick with the original. The only figures I'm really interested in from this line are the characters who didn't even get a release the first time around. Bumblebee oddly seems LESS accurate in robot mode though not as fiddly as the original so I don't see myself replacing that figure either. Barricade doesn't have an original to compare with at all and I love the WfC/FoC designs, also that's the only figure that I feel actually is accurate to the video game. If the rest of the line is as good as Barricade looks I'll be happy.
I'll be getting this OP regardless, I don't care about visible hands (VPS), it don't bother me one bit. I just love his chunky buffness, this will be my fourth Prime so far, this year and he'll stand proudly together with Core OP, ROTB mainline Prime, deluxe ES Prime and all my other Primes.
The thing about the back of the truck is that it doesn't matter cause they're not really in disguise in Cybertron... Only issue I have for mine is that the detachable arm falls off really easily.
This will be my pre-earth OP, the WFC trilogy Siege OP looks like he already been to earth already and gone back to Cybertron and fought a bunch of battles and had to replace parts of his body and not worry about blending in!
Great review TJ. Question on the arms: Does only the one arm come off for the gun, or can both come off? I know in the games you could switch which arm the gun was on (basically changing which shoulder you were looking over) and i'm curious if that extends to the toy as well
Man, I haven't picked up a Transformers figure in 15-20 years. I did play WfC and FoC a lot, though, so this guy and Barricade (easily 2 of my favorite character designs from those games) are probably about to change that.
I think it’s weird to see an alt mode without windshield. Because it is a vehicle ,in the end. There must be smaller transformers or different size transformers that can ride in vehicles that don’t transform at all and those are the ones that are copied and used for alt modes.
My only problem with this guy is more of a concern of stability. Those slider joints for the chest feel a bit weak especially in robot mode where you have so much torque when moving the arms. It seems like the more flexible plastic rather then the super rigid stuff but it’s still a bit concerning and makes me feel like I have to be a bit more delicate when messing with the upper body. Overall though he looks great and I’m really wanting Megs and Screamer to go along with him, hopefully they are done as well as this guy.
I wonder how they're gonna handle Megatron and his fusion canon. His fusion canon was attached to his arm like it usually is, so will they keep this gimmick and have it work like the Fall of Cybertron fusion canon or will his normal arm have the fusion canon attached and he just won't come with another weapon but his arm will still be removable so you can give him other guns?
@@crimsondynamo615 Could always just come with a fusion canon that works how it does as a pickup for every other character I suppose. That way Megs gets his fusion canon on his arm while you get one to use on other characters.

TJ, I think you're wrong for chastising fans for being critical of the hollow bits. "Toys were always hollow on the inside, now you can see the inside" and basically telling fans to get over it. What's the point of that? Toys only get more expensive as the years go by, so fans have the right to be more discerning of these products. I honestly feel that some of the design of this new prime is a step backwards for Studio Series. I think the matrix is a waste of plastic, paint, and molding that could have gone towards filling in some of the hollowness. Prime can't even hold the thing. It's a valid complaint. Also, regarding the exposed hands, anyone who plays with their figures looks at the toy from the rear. When you're holding a toy in your hand, you do typical look at it from all angles especially if you are transforming it. However, like you, the exposed hands are not a deal breaker.
