Stockton was a true sportsman. He wanted to win and above all else he wanted his teammates to be successful.

So true.. he had no ego or boastful pride. Stockton was VERY DEDICATED to his faith. If not a b ball player he probably would have spent his life in the ministry. Putting others above himself was how he was deep down in his soul. He had no want or need for the limelight. His nickname was the boyscout. Other players would tease him because he didn't party.. didn't have I ne Night stands with women.. he would rather be at church

Honestly assists was the most important stat to me. I knew that my athleticism wasn't in par with how good my high school teammates were. So everyday after practice, from 7th grade all the way to graduation, i practiced my passing. Now i wasn't a horrible shooter, and could drive to the basket fairly well, but compared to my team and the competition i might as well have been a lifetime G league player (which isn't a jab at guys who have been). But the one thing i had over everyone was my ability to get the ball to anyone anywhere on the court. And John Stockton is the man id have to thank for that

As a 90's teen from Utah, Stockton was the MAN! I think we just took for granted that he would always be there. Grew up watching greatness and now in my 40's, the fast break 3-point game is sooooo boring by comparison. NBA needs more post-ups, drives in the paint, show-stopping fast break dunks.

    1. John Stockton - 15,806
    2. Jason Kidd - 12, 091
    Career steals:
    1. John Stockton - 3,265

You didn't mention he swept the Lakers four strait in the 98 wcf, a team with Shaq, Eddie Jones, Nick Van Exel, and Kobe Bryant, a team that was expected by a lot of people to win the championship, to go all the way, got swept by the Jazz, they couldn't handle the brilliance of John Stockton.

I would say John Stockton is more like Jason Kidd than Steve Nash because of his defense although he is more of a shooter like Nash. So in a sense, John Stockton is the best of both worlds. He can defend like Kidd, shoot like Nash and pass like both of these guys whilst being durable like a nail.
And let's not forget he's clutch unlike Chris Paul, that 33 bpm heart rate is doing him wonders.

19 years with the same team, all-time leader in assists and steals, co-MVP in the 1993 All-Star game, and a two-time Olympic gold medalist. A lot of people put too much on Championships but to me, while a championship would've been nice, the other things I mentioned prove that John Stockton was the best point guard in the last decades of the 20th century and into the 21st. Jordan was a talented player, I will give him that, but the Bulls relied on him too much to get those 6 championships.

9 Times an NBA player had 1,000+ assists in a season. 1 Time by Isiah Thomas, 1 Time by Kevin Johnson, and 7 Times by John Stockton in 7 season in a row. From 87-88 to 95-96 season he never had less than 1,011 Assists in a season. That is just INSANE!!!

Them dudes said he had a Malone to pass to.... John would've made any big man shine... To me it was the other way around, Malone wouldn't have scored the points he did without John. Several hall of famers who were bigs openly admitted they were envious of Malone having Stockton as a teammate.

  • @Lola23339

I've never heard about how low Stockton's heart rate was. Obviously, that means that nothing made him nervous. I've seen the size of his hands at the old NBA store in NYC. I'm 6-1 as well and his hands were probably 30%+ larger than mine. Above all, Stockton was an extreme competitor with an off the charts bball IQ. For a small white guy from yesteryear, the closest comparison I can think of is Mark Price. He was great too.

Stockton and malone is one of the greatest pairs in nba history. Brothers and they WERE THE TEAM for almost 15 years. Stockton was so fast and agile that no one could catch him bringing the ball down court.. he'd then pass it to malone waiting in the paint.. and Carl "the mail man" malone is probably.the physically stongest guy to ever play. He wasnt as tall as shaq.. but in prime, Malone was built like freaking lou ferigno.. guy could bench 500 lbs.. no one could stop his inside drive. He was like a cannon ball rolling through.. damn i miss those guys

there was 3 reasons that made stockton underrated first his teammate, you can mostly said that malone was the only " great player" in his team, second his playstyle was very " basic" but refined to a point where a simple coil could be better that a diamond and 3rd his body and personality to never come in the spotlight! He was just doing his job then returned to his familly! but listen to any great player that had played against him they would all said mostly the same thing " he was a demon on the court with the look and atitude of an accountant!" it's was stocktons was my favorite player end that i liked rodman, they are not the most " flashy player and they are mostly good on their field but in dire situation they was the ones you can always count on to be at their best in their field (for rodman it's defence some peoples called him the "energiser bunny"!!

One of the 75 all time greatest players in the history of the NBA but dumping the ball to Malone because that was what was expected cost them championships according to Isaiah Thomas. They lost many playoff games by single digits where a Stockton 3 or a 2 plus would have made the difference.
