  • This video was filmed at Orlando Apopka Airport (X04) where there is no control tower and a short(ish) runway. This is the first time Mike has tried landing here. We are still fine tuning his landings but each challenge he faces he takes in stride and does a great job! This video is no different!
    Enjoy the landings

    great go around decision, I wan't to train some go-arounds soon, I feel like landings should feel as the second best option, when everything lines up perfectly, this way you will always be prepared to go around if anything is off instead of wanting to put that thing on the ground.

    I too liked the Go-Around...nice call. Not that I have any real advice being that I am a rookie at this flying thingie but I use to call every landing , an attempted landing. In my head I'd say, "Cleared for the 'attempted' landing...Rwy ##'. This way I didn't feel forced to land. Personally, I love uncontrolled airports better than towered...I fly for the fun of it.

    I love the look at 10:10 - no matter how chilled you make us all believe you are, you can feel the aircraft under your ass and know when something isn't right! Have you ever been caught out by a late-stage student doing something unexpected, and maybe you weren't paying as much attention as you would with a lower hour student? To be honest I imagine it's not that much different to a private flight with another pilot in the passenger seat - you are still keeping an side-eye on things even though someone else is flying, and you are pretending to just look out the window :)

    • @LewDixAviation
      @LewDixAviation  4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      In all honesty, when I look out the side window I am making sure that the plane feels like it should. I don’t know if that’s a normal technique haha but I know how a normal approach to landing should feel or a stall let’s say, so I look out the window to feel it. I’ve had a guy that was beyond his solid stall me at 100 feet and we dropped like a brick and I had to step in. Heart in mouth moment but we never touched down and managed to recover. We are all prone to mistakes

    Not a fan of the overhead tear drop entry. I think it is the least safe of all the traffic pattern entries, done the way most people do them. Especially in high wing aircraft...

  • @mvlouman
    @mvlouman 4 ปีที่แล้ว

    Wait, did they just land on Balota airstrip?

  • @bsinger339
    @bsinger339 4 ปีที่แล้ว

    @lewdixaviaiton - question for you. I'm a little over 500 hours, and I've heard different points of view between a tear drop entry vs just turning on downwind without the teardrop. Can you share your thoughts on why you would use one over the other?

    • @permdegraaf
      @permdegraaf 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Agreed. I would have thought crossing midfield, sock check then turning downwind or cross midfield again would be the way to go...

    • @LewDixAviation
      @LewDixAviation  4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      While both are in the AIM, I prefer the teardrop. Simply because I think it's a bit safer given that you are flying a minute out of the pattern to enter on the 45° downwind. If you're overflying the field and turning downwind immediately you run the risk of cutting someone off if you happened not to see or hear them. Just a personal preference really.

    Would it be appropriate (waiting for the frequency to be relatively clear so it doesn't cause too much disturbance) to vent your frustration with the weather going off so frequently by playing it over and over again? Seems like everyone would get annoyed and then they would stop playing it. Probably not the best airmanship as it would block the frequency, but it would solve the problem
