Kamard Johnson and his brother Rashad are blazing their own trail in the commercial truck tire sales game. In the past six years, they’ve grown GTT Commercial Tires “The Owner Operators Store” from selling out of a small shed to now owning multiple locations including a 30,000 square foot facility In their hometown of Richmond, Va pumping out tens of thousands of tires per month.
With nearly 2k 5 STAR Google reviews the brothers have retained and loyal customer base normalizing customer service in an otherwise transactional service. From educating their customers on the best tires for their needs to making sure the relationship does not stop after the sale the brothers are stomping their competition simply by focusing on their customers.
    Their growth has been phenomenal!
In 2017 the company did 317K on sales and has doubled in size year over a year doing 4.6 million in sales last and on pace to do 10 million + for the upcoming year.
Tune in Tuesday as we explore the business of commercial truck tire sales with Kamard and discuss how he and his brother have been able to reinvent the tire buying experience.
Special thanks to our guest Kamard Johnson

I’m one of those guys you’d have to pull teeth to get shit outta me. I hate interviews. When I played ball I always hauled ass whenever coach would pull me to the side and tell me they wanted to talk. Interviews are for nosy ass people wanting to peer into your life. I feel like things would be better if they didn’t force people to be interviewed, that’s when you’ll see more interviews like so

I used to be a Territory Sales Manager for major tire manufacturer. I know exactly what he’s talking about when the sales rep tells him that there are too many dealers in the area because I was the person saying that to small dealers too. Don’t entirely agree, but corporate determines strategy, not the guy in the field like I was.
The reason why I wasn’t allowed to pursue new dealers in my market (West & Central FL) is because the end consumer for me wasn’t an owner-op or a guy with 10 trucks. It was government, regional and national fleets that purchased and were billed on specific National Accounts.
Strategically, if I was calling on a large fleet and I would introduce my top dealer in that area. More often than not, that dealer sold my retreads too. If the fleet decided to purchase, I as the manufacturer provide the pricing, and the fleet pays me. In turn, the dealer delivers tires and provides services for a commission paid on the back-end by the manufacturer.
Truck tire sales are very strategic. Large fleets don’t want to deal with dozens of dealers, they prefer 1 or 2 national accounts and designated dealers in an area.
The little guy may feel like he’s getting screwed, but reality is that smaller stores that I’ve been to that don’t deal with national accounts, have significantly more margins selling local book.
The money for dealer servicing national accounts is really made in labor and mechanical.
Very empowering story. I relate, growing up in the Bronx, NY. My only white influences then were some teachers, otherwise, everyone around me was a minority and immigrants. It wasn’t till I joined the Army that I was exposed to white America.
It wasn’t till I got into corporate, that I realized my childhood dreams of a house with a garage wasn’t being rich, it was just middle class. Life’s really a journey. God Bless you, your hustling spirit, and your business!
I now work for a Business Financing Company, doing Term Loans, Lines of Credit, SBA Loans, etc. If you want to learn how to get business credit or talk tires.
