    Catch and Cook Delicious Pickerel (Walleye) Over the Fire - solo woman wilderness traveller enjoys a Temagami shore lunch. Fishing as she paddled through Lake Temagami, my wife, Tori Baird, owner of www.paddlelikeagirl.com lands her first Pickerel! Tori runs backcountry camping workshops geared towards teaching woman how to backcountry camp and paddle! She was on this trip with her friend Cobie Sharp and they each soloed their own canoe. Cobie captured the thumbnail pic. Check out Cobi's Instagram page here: / sparkadventurephotog This shore lunch is a window into a small portion of their seven-day backcountry adventure that included over 20km of portaging through some remote lakes, old-growth forests and native spiritual sites. I hope you enjoyed the sounds of sizzling fish and fires in the vid and man that fish looked delicious!

    That looks very tasty and makes me yearn for shore lunch. I will say that open fire cooking is the best but it is also a potentially dangerous activity. You did it right in being near water. Having had a shore catch on fire once, I will ask that you consider lifting the pan off the fire to pull fish and place fish in the oil. I was lucky but all it takes is one big splatter to hit your arm for that jerky reaction.. Then you have oil in the fire and all heck breaks loose. Loved the vid sorry for the potential bad vibe.. Not meant to be mean but a teaching moment.

    • @JimBairdAdventurer
      @JimBairdAdventurer  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Ya, I’ve had that happen when using oil over and open fire. Most it really does from my experience is warp your pan and scorch your fish as long as you’re not using a ton of oil so ya, you gotta be careful! Water doesn’t do much for an oil fire either. Once when cooking beer battered fish on a stove the pan of sizzling oil fell off in my hand and gave me a nasty burn. Thanks a lot for the insight and for watching!

    • @JimBairdAdventurer

      I don’t think this one had parasites but in some places I’ve noticed bass can. If they have too many worms I’ll throw them back or you can pick them out. They are edible though - the kind we get sometimes around my place. So, if there are some in the fillet, you’d just cook it the same length of time you’d usually cool a fillet. I haven’t seen them in the Temagami area where Tori caught this one.

    Are you sure it’s legal sized? With the slot limit in district 11, it quite evident the Ontario government doesn’t want anyone to keep a walleye except for First Nations of course. Was supposed to go to Canada last year to celebrate my fathers 65th year of fishing in Canada but the folks from Ottawa had other ideas. About ready to abandon Canada for good and its a shame because I really love the land and the people but the government both provincial and federal make it so hard.

      Walleye are largely called Pickerel in Canada. It’s a colloquialism even if it potentially comes from incorrect roots. Like Lake Trout aren’t really Trout, they’re Char but it’s accepted as correct to call them Lake Trout. If you see Pickerel being sold in grocery stores or restaurants in Canada, it’s Walleye.

Lake and Brook Trout aren’t trout, they’re Char, ling cod aren’t related to Cod, Dolphin Fish aren’t related to Dolphins etc. I’m not sure why they’re called Pickerel here but often it’s represented as Walleye (Pickerel) in Canada with Pickerel shown in brackets in the official government literature.

    I wasn't going to comment. But I cannot be silent. No, I do not know if you deleted you post or made a correction because I stopped following your IG. But I lost so much respect for you Mrs. Tori. Oh no, you upset some random internet guy.
    Your post saying that the riots were good was not acceptable. My family had to move because Portland is burning down from "peaceful protesters." What do I know about suffering, I have "white privilege" you ask? Just my people murdered by the millions. Being inslaved for hundreds of years by several different peoples.
    And apart from all that, I was taken away from my family and passed around since a very young age in foster care... I promise you that I did not feel privileged while being beaten by foster parents or abused other ways by foster siblings...
    Long story short, is there too much police violence? *YES* ! But how does more violence solve it?

    How does anyone call that a pickerel? Pickerel are there own completely separate family of fish. That's a walleye, just a walleye. Pickerel are things like chain pickerel, northern pike and muskie. Completely different fish. That stuff annoys the hell outta me

    • @JimBairdAdventurer
      @JimBairdAdventurer  3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      In Canada, Walleye is more commonly called Pickerel. It’s sold in grocery stores and restaurants as Pickerel. I think chain Pickerel only occour in a small part of Canada in the St. Lawrence. Consider that Lake Trout and Brook Trout are not Trout at all, rather, thy’re Char. Ling Cod aren’t related to cod. “Walleyed Pike” (which Walleye are called in some parts of the US) aren’t related to Pike, Dolphin Fish aren’t related to Dolphins and the list goes on. So, just as it’s considered correct to call a Lake Trout a Lake Trout (even though it’s a Char) it’s consodered correct to call Walleye Pickerel in Canada. This is what’s called a coloquialism....even if technically it may be “incorrect” or unofficial. I don’t know the history but potentially two different fish just got called the same name by chance? So, my suggestion is that you should do a little reasearch, educate yourself and then maybe these things won’t “annoy the hell out of you”.

    • @thomasshileny4551
      @thomasshileny4551 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@JimBairdAdventurer it's the biologist in me and yes I am educated on the topic (MS fisheries science). And I realize there are some regional names. Lakers and brookies are called char cause they belong to the char genus Salvelinus as they are closely related to other char around the world. The reason this one annoys me so much is being there are actually pickerel species in most areas walleyes are found, if a novice angler catches a pike they're going to think you can fillet it like this and be fine. But real pickerel have a thing called a y bone that small children could actually choke on if not removed properly. I do understand your point, my apologies for being so gruff initially.
