- This is patio gardening on a budget, I promised earlier this year that I would do a series on container gardens based on how we used to grow when we didn't have access to a garden. I'll demonstrate just how much food can be grown in a tiny amount of space all on an extremely low budget. This is patio gardening on a budget
A lot of these ideas are ideal for a balcony garden, no need for fancy or expensive planters grow with what's available.

We grew up without access to a garden, all we had was a small patch of concrete, I know many people are in that same situation so I wanted to do something to help you grow despite access to a proper Garden

This is the BEST channel. Gardening doesn't have to be expensive, it should be available to all. And it doesn't have to look like Pinterest to be super effective.

This is another great video Mothin. It's inspiring to see such practical, affordable, down to earth, do-able content that anyone can have a go at. All it takes is a person to have one little success with this; perhaps growing a pot of fresh herbs, and they become inspired and motivated to start growing food. Food security and sustainability is the future.

I was littarly about to go to my local garden centre to buy more pots and compost.. so happy I watched this channel... I cut the grass yday so I will use that to fill... only just started planting but I've caught the bug
Hi Mothin. This is possibly the best gardening video I have seen on TH-cam to date, and I watch loads! I am doing lots of container veg this year inspired by the Home Grown Veg channel amongst others, to supplement what I can fit into my garden raised beds. What you have demonstrated today has taken this to the next level. I can't wait to implement your techniques. We are lucky to have a ready supply of mole hills, seaweed and forest leaf mold nearby to fill our buckets with but my garden scraps, roots, old compost etc have always gone in the compost bins. Not any more! What I find really exciting is the thought of easy ready made garden compost to spread over the beds in winter simply by emptying the containers! Brilliant! Thanks so much for sharing 😃

Best gardening programme for UK I've seen - just discovered - absolutely brilliant. Impressed with your sensible ecological knowledge. All gardening should be as soundly organic as possibly. I never use artifical materials, if possible, except containers or covers and then reuse as much as possible. This seems to to your philosophy also.
So glad you like it, i try to work with nature rather than against it, recycle and reuse as much as possible to show people how to grow without spending a vast fortune
Your neighbour is a lucky lady to have you do this for her. I converted my side concrete garden to container gardening and did pretty much the same.but like you say they dry out pretty easy,so after over ordering some pea shingle,I put it in the bottom but instead of drainage holes in the bottom I put them about 1.5" in the sides, sort of like the self watering ones it stored some water away from the roots in the stones. Saved a lot of water and worked really well. Love your videos Monthin and the cinema family watch of your TV premier (congrats). P.s. 100% germination on my chillies doing it the way you showed with the tea. Thank you because last year I had 3 very late plants after germination problems.👍

Your garden looks amazing! I can see you put a lot of hard work into it and it really shows in your plants. I wanted to get out in my garden today and plant some cucumbers but it was our first 90+ degree day of the year and I just could not handle the heat. I just love to garden but I still have a lot I want to learn. I make garden videos too. I hope we can learn more from each other as we grow our gardens! 🌺🌻🐝🌸🌼🍅🫑👨🌾☀️🐇

This is great! I do something similar over winter; in the autumn I take the Halloween pumpkins and sink them into leftover pots of soil/compost and it creates beautiful compost by Spring!

Genius way of filling large containers. Great for shallow rooted plants. Must admit I've been filling them with compost albeit my own. I suppose if you're overloaded with compost you can do it, whilst it can produce excellent crops and it can of course be recycled. Recommended with spuds though, one spud per bucket.

I mulch all my beds with semi broken down compost, prefer it breaks down on the beds

The green crates are what I use, I ask my local fish and chip shop and he leaves them out the back fore to pic up, also along with his potato paper sacks for the weed surprising cover.

Thank you, I never thought of placing kitchen scraps, garden waste & cardboard etc...at the bottom of the container. Also giving used potting mix another life. Buying a lot of potting mix & replacing it becomes financially prohibitive. I'm going to do it this way from now on & hi from Western Australia, I've subscribed.

Great ideas to inspire people who are on a budget and worried about the cost of gardening. My question is what happens when the food has decomposed and the plants are starting to sink in deeper into the container? Many thanks
I'm counting on some settlement so the plants get some protection being lower down. perennial plants mulch them again next year, for annuals repeat a new layer of scraps then compost
Superb video - thanks for your time and effort in making it. I'm trying using woven rubble sacks to grow potatoes in, not as cheap as your solution but a lot cheaper (£2.95 for 5 at Toolstation) than the big plastic pots I've seen people use elsewhere . I've been using sieved garden soil/compost to fill them but having seen this I'll try putting garden/kitchen waste in e.g. shreddings, moss from lawn etc. All the best and thanks again.
One thing I should have mentioned the kitchen waste in the bottom won't be good if you're growing root veg
We grow our potatoes in bags, with two inches of old garden soil to sit the potatoes on and then fill the bags with our shredded paper and grass cuttings. It has worked really well and the resulting compost is great for adding to our beds or pots when we harvest. We find things compost best with living roots in them as the exudates from the roots attract more life to soil.
Thanks for that great to see something for people with limited outdoor space or who want to use up every patch. Going to make up a some of those to give to my kids both of whom only have small patches of concrete. Regarding your food waste - I only compost veg and fruit peelings and coffee but you've put bread in. What food waste can you put in to a compost bin
With this method I use everything.
I'm quite open when it comes to composting I put anything that has once lived in, there might be rodent problems if you don't manage it right, so that's something to think about

Maybe an idea to make videos for small gardens designs. I have a new house with a garden 50m2, so designing my garden i am thinking to have a sitting/walking area of 25 m2, pathway 5m2, shed 5m2 and dont know what to grow in 15m2. I know i will go vertical. But what can be recommended for me? Maybe you can show a 15 m2 garden and advise what to plant. I think a lot of people in the city wouldn't plant more than 20m2.

love your methods of filling up the containers :) one thing i want to ask, when using compost from last years containers, do you not worry about slugs etc being in that soil?
Not really, slugs will find their way into pretty much anything, a balanced ecosystem is what's important even in a patio garden

This won't be very good for root veg, the worms that this will attract will eat the veg too.

Been seeing this horrible idea come back recently and I’m glad to see you put it to rest… quick question, I didn’t see you drill holes to the containers you got from the supermarket. Do you do that? Maybe I wasn’t paying attention to that part

id mix in the food waste with soil a bit first tho
It's better to layer for a pot like this than mix
@@MyFamilyGarden hmm but wouldnt the microbes/bacterias in the soil have a better chance to break down the scraps if the soil is touching them? I guess when you water the soil will eventually flush down and mix in with the scraps but just in case you have some incredibly fast growing plants that have roots that reach down that far in daysl

compost is just way too expensive, you could mix manure and garden soil etc. to make things go further.
Manure would serve the same purpose as the kitchen scraps
@@MyFamilyGarden yeah but i think it would work, still a bit wary of plants stunted growth when reaching the manure/food scraps as theyre competing for nitrogen but im sure youll show us the success you have.
Fresh manure would potentially burn the roots but buried deep enough would give it enough time to break down, food waste and manure are both very rich in nitrogen, I've planted a similar tub up today so the next update in this series will explain my thoughts etc
